I was amazed by the transformation of Kevin Zegers from teen idol to serious actor. Two feature films should be credited for this amazing transition - Fifty Dead Men Walking and The Perfect Age of Rock and Roll. While Fifty Dead Men gave us a glimpse into Kevin's serious side as an actor, Perfect Age gave us his most important acting vehicle to date.

- - - In The Perfect Age of Rock and Roll, the story centers on a rock star (Zegers) who retreats to his Long Island hometown after his sophomore album flops. Cinematical was quite skeptical about the casting:
Just what would you expect from a white, cutie student from The Jane Austen Book Club (or the dysfunctional son from Transamerica) and Spike Lee? Believe it or not, Lee is executive producing a new indie film called The Perfect Age of Rock 'n' Roll, »

He played a British-Jewish atheist in Crossing Over, while he was a student at M.I.T who turned casino gambler in 21. In Fifty Dead Men Walking, he was a British government spy and a most wanted man by the Ira. In Heartless, he's a young man with a large heart-shaped birthmark on his face, who soon discovers that there are demons on the streets of East London. Yup, he never duplicates his roles and you can see for yourself the diversity of the films he made in such a short span of time. - - -
- - - But before the roles I've mentioned, it was in Across the Universe that Jim Sturgess first entered the scene. Apparently, there's no stopping Jim from becoming today's most sought-after actor. Even Film journalist and critic Anne Thompson is starstruck!

After watching Fifty Dead Men Walking, I can definitely confirm what I knew all along - Jim Sturgess is one terrific actor. If you've noticed, even in movies that critics failed to appreciate, Jim's performance was never put into question. I thought the political-thriller will become Jim's acting highlight, apparently I made my conclusions too early.

- - - Philip Ridley's Heartless, his next feature film, seems to be gaining a lot of momentum and with that, raves for Jim's performance. Right now, it has already gained some extremely positive reviews from critics all over, plus the buzz it continues to generate at the Festival circuit. While we wait for the release of Heartless in theaters, this cool clip above is for all Jim Sturgess fans and for anyone looking for a terrific horror film.

The Vancouver International Film Festival kicks off in earnest tonight after a few days of panels Vancouver Film and Television Forums. The fest certainly doesn’t have the high profile of Toronto International Film Festival or Festival Du Cannes to be sure but its a growing fest in a beautiful city so who’s complaining.
Whether you are in Vancouver or following along at home, here is a menu of resources to peruse and enjoy (unless of course you are instead watching the Canucks hockey season kick-off tonight instead with the rest of Vancouver except for the people at the Whitecaps vs. Timbers soccer playoffs).
Westender’s Precious Spector
Vancouver’s WestEnder arts and culture magazine provides Movies: Top picks for this year’s Viff.
We tag ‘The Agony and The Ecstasy of Phil Spector‘ saying, “He is, of course, a convicted murderer and the proud owner of many ridiculous wigs. »

It's almost time for an update of the Top 50 Hottest Young Actors list! Before our rundown featuring the actors below, let's have a look at some hitlists from across the web - Moviefone has a 25 under 25 and Fandango a 10 Young Actors to Watch list. ScreenDaily publishes Stars of Tomorrow and there is the annual European Shooting Stars celebrated as part of the Berlinale. The first 2 only consider Hollywood movies and cast, while ScreenDaily is exclusively for UK-based filmmakers and actors. The 'shooting star' programme is, of course, for Europeans.
- - -
- - - These hitlists are more than point of references to our own - they are inspiration to keep us on our feet and come up with a listing that consider all angles. I don't think anyone is naïve enough to list down and rank 50 young actors ( and 50 young actresses) and expect everyone to agree and be happy, »
