Looking for a World War II movie that looks better than Valkyrie? Here it is. Variety has debuted the second full trailer for Edward Zwick's Defiance, which stars Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, and Jamie Bell as three Polish brothers. I'm a big war movie guy, so these kinds of movies usually excite me more than normal, but I still think this looks absolutely phenomenal. This really looks like it could really compete with Bryan Singer's Valkyrie in terms of production and intensity, but remarkably Paramount is giving it a limited release. After the buzz that this trailer is certain to cause, I'm hoping they change their mind. I really mean it when I say this looks like a huge sleeper hit, maybe even the best movie of the year. It hasn't been shown to anyone yet, most likely because they've been finishing the effects, but it still has

We've gotten our hands on a new video featurette on Valkyrie. It's a quick look behind the scenes of the production, which highlights the film's "based on a true story" connections and gives everyone involved in making it a chance to kiss Bryan Singer's ass. Have you seen The Usual Suspects? He deserves it. Watch the entire featurette, "Valkyrie: Based on a True Story", below:

Late last week we ran a second trailer for Bryan Singer's Valkyrie and it finally looked like the great movie I think we were all hoping it would be. The comments seem to be in agreement with my excitement, give or take complains about the accents, but it looked like Valkyrie might finally be gaining some much needed early buzz. Earlier today, Nikkie Finke over at Deadline Hollywood ran an article about an e-mail that was being sent around by a Digital Marketing rep at MGM, one of the studios involved in distributing the film (in addition to United Artists). The e-mail was discussing the "online buzz" generated by the release of the trailer and the poster, and remarkably, it quotes one of my articles extensively. So the reason why this is interesting news is because everyone, from Nikki Finke to Hunter Stephenson at SlashFilm to Russ Fischer at Chud,

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes had a sleepy little girl on their way out of Alice's Tea Cup in New York City on Katie's evening off last night. Suri's become quite the city slicker these past few weeks taking in the Manhattan sites and hitting up all the kid-friendly hot spots with mom and dad. We just got a taste of Katie's sexy Eli Stone look and the trailer for Tom's troubled and intense Valkyrie, which may have trouble finding an audience, but at the end of the day the parents are both all about Suri. How could you resist the little superstar with her adorable blue sash — too sweet. Splash News Online

Kenneth Branagh is negotiating to direct “Thor,” the next Marvel Comics property that will be turned into a live-action film by Marvel Studios, says Variety. The film is still on track to hit theaters in 2010. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige’s choice of Branagh is surprising, as Branagh hasn’t really directed an action-heavy film since his debut on ”Henry V,” a bloody telling of the British king’s conquest of France. Branagh is the latest in a string of directors—such as Jon Favreau ("Iron Man"), Christopher Nolan (the Batman franchise) and Gavin Hood ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine")—with arthouse roots taking on big-budget comicbook fare. The “Thor” adaptation, penned by Mark Protosevich, follows disabled medical student Donald Blake, who has an alter ego as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor. Marvel will self-finance the film via its $500 million credit facility through Merrill Lynch. Marvel used that coin to fund both

Variety is reporting that Kenneth Branagh, known for directing and starring in the big-screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic tale of bloody war and intrigue, Henry V, is in talks with Marvel Studios to direct the film adaptation of the comic company’s character Thor, the God of Thunder. And while Marvel’s choice of Branagh seems odd to some, many point to his recent resurgence onstage in London in “Ivanov” to critical success, as well as his upcoming roles in the notorious Bryan Singer and Tom Cruise “Valkyrie” and “The Boat That Rocked”, directed by Richard Curtis. There is a tentative scheduled release date of 2010 for the upcoming “Thor” project with no official distributor. The character was introduced in 1962 [...]

British thespian and director Kenneth Branagh is in talks to direct the upcoming Marvel comic adaptation Thor. Variety reports that Branagh will helm the new movie despite the fact that he has not directed anything remotely like if before. He did direct a fairly action heavy flick Henry V, his directorial debut back in 1989.
Marvel Studios will self finance the movie adaptation of their comic-book, which follows disabled medical student Donald Blake, who has an alter ego as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor.
Branagh is currently appearing on the London stage to rave reviews in the title role of "Ivanov," and will act in this December's Bryan Singer film Valkyrie.
Thor will be released in 2010.

It’s likely the biggest news of the day: Kenneth Branagh is in talks to direct Marvel Comics’ big-screen adaptation of “Thor,” according to Variety.
The film, written by Mark Protosevich, follows partially disabled medical student Donald Blake, who discovers he has an alter ego as the powerful Norse warrior Thor.
Branagh is indeed a quite surprising pick, especially because we haven’t really seen him direct a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster. His most recent directorial effort was “Sleuth.”
The trade said Marvel would soon announce a distributor for the project, which is expected to hit theaters 2010. The studio will self-finance the film as well.
Branagh’s other directing credits include the 1994 version of “Frankenstein,” “Hamlet” and the Oscar-winning ”Henry V.” In front of the camera, he most recently starred in “Five Children and It.” He will next be seen in Bryan Singer’s WWII drama “Valkyrie.”

Can anyone catch up to this cool cat? With Shia Labeouf's Eagle Eye taking the top spot at the box-office this weekend it makes four-in-a-row for the actor (not counting the animated Surf's Up) and it made me wonder if the 22-year-old is our next big time actor or if it's just a case of him starring in the right film at the right time that has made his films so popular leaving the title of "The Next Big Thing" up for grabs. Let's face it, Transformers and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull were going to make big bucks no matter what, Shia had very little, if anything, to do with their success. One could make the argument that Disturbia opened during a very weak time in 2007 and that accounts for its three week box-office domination with rather modest numbers, winning that third weekend with barely over $9 million.

If you hadn't heard yet Matthew Vaughn is not directing Marvel's Thor, it is the second time he has been attached to a superhero flick and ultimately ended up not helming the feature. X3 was the first one and he went on to direct Stardust instead. However, that isn't stopping Marvel from persuing the project and we now learn Kenneth Branagh of all people may be the man to take up the reins. Branagh is negotiating to direct the flick, which is already expected to hit theaters on June 4, 2010 with a distributor to be set shortly. Branagh isn't a surprising choice because he can't direct, he's a surprising choice because he isn't known for directing action. As Variety points out the last time he directed an action flick was actually his directorial debut in 1989 with Henry V a film that earned Branagh an Oscar nomination for acting and directing and

A RopeofSilicon reader just sent in a few comments from an interview Tom Cruise had with Total Film Magazine regarding his upcoming film Valkyrie. Cruise addresses the inspiration, screenplay, controversy, accents and the film's box-office chances. Valkyrie is set to hit theaters on December 26 and if you haven't watched the most recent trailer I attached it to the bottom of this article. Give it a watch, you won't be disappointed. The full Cruise interview is featured in the October 2008 issue of Total Film Magazine. On Claus von Stauffenberg:
"We got hold of the uniform, I put the thing on and it was like I immediately felt, 'Ok. We're going to tell this story. I knew there were attempts on Hitler, but I didn't know about von Stauffenberg until I read Christopher McQuarrie's screenplay." On the screenplay:
"The screenplay itself is extraordinary. It made my hands sweat when I was reading it.

A new trailer for Valkyrie has appeared online. As many of you know it stars Tom Cruise as Col. Claus von Stauffenberg (complete with American accent) and Bill Nighy (complete with English accent). Despite the obvious historical flaws and the movie getting pushed back several months, the trailer got me a little excited. But then again that's what they are meant to do. Judge for yourself below! Today we have a look at the first poster for Valkyrie as well as a brand new trailer. The first trailer was released last November (I cannot believe it’s been that long already). I didn’t really see much hope for the film from that trailer and I certainly do not buy Tom Cruise’s character… especially since he sounds and seems to act like he does in all of his other films with that American accent.
The poster is pretty stylistic and fits the film adequately. The one thing I find is that it looks a little too “techie” with the grey box-lines everywhere. But really, there’s nothing really good or bad to say about it.
Take a gander at the poster:

The final poster for Tom Cruise's World War II drama about the attempted assassination of Adolf Hitler, Valkyrie, has been released today. Accidents on set, political road blocks and an ever-changing release date make us wonder if this seemingly ill-fated production can deliver, but the poster is definitely pretty cool. We're keeping our fingers crossed.
Valkyrie is set for a solid December 26, 2008 release.

Just a short while after the new poster and whole bunch of stills for VALKYRIE were handed over by MGM, the new trailer was released online. Though the film has been plagued by bad buzz almost since day one, I don't see much to complain about in this trailer. It's tight, suspenseful and impressively shot by Bryan Singer. Here's one film I'm really rooting for because I don't think it deserves the invective launched against it. I've always enjoyed Bryan Singer's work (SUPERMAN RETURNS...

Tom Cruise and Eddie Izzard in the same film? No, it’s not a sign of the apocalypse. It’s the new film Valkyrie. Our friends at Yahoo Movies passed us this trailer. Looks interesting...although Cruise in a Nazi uniform trying to kill Hitler? Sounds like the beginning of a bad acid trip or a South Park episode. Let us know what you think.

"Valkyrie" has just got its second trailer outed. Presented by United Artists, the fresh video is focused more on the complex plot to kill the Nazi leader itself and the sense of danger lurking around the rebels during the time. The new trailer also reveals a series of unseen footages, gun combats as well as explosions. <br><br /> Focusing the movie on the July 20 plot of German army officers to assassinate Adolf Hitler, "Valkyrie" centers its story on Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg in one of the most heroic but least known episodes of World War II. Severely wounded in combat, von Stauffenberg returns from Africa, joins the German Resistance and plans an elaborate scheme called Operation Valkyrie to bring down Nazi and put an end to the war by killing the evil leader. <br><br /> Directed by Bryan Singer from a script by Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander, the drama thriller stars Tom Cruise,
