Inspired on the same proportion by a poem written by Robert Frost and the supposed auto-biography of director and screenwriter Dennis Lee, Fireflies in the Garden is a very interesting drama, whose sober direction, detailed screenplay and excellent performances avoid it from being a generic independent familiar drama.
Fireflies in the Garden is one of those movies which do not try to tell a conventional story, but showing the development the characters experiment and, its exit depends on a balance between honest emotions, credible performances and a slow tone which should never turn boring. This film achieves that balance, and although there are a few obtuse metaphors and incongruent scenes, I enjoyed this film pretty much.
As I mentioned before, the performances are brilliant.Ryan Reynolds is very credible and natural, something which also applies to Willem Dafoe and Julia Roberts (I admit I am not a big fan of her, but I cannot deny her work on this movie is very solid). The rest of the cast is also very competent, but Reynolds, Dafoe and Roberts definitely stand out.I recommend Fireflies in the Garden as a very interesting drama.I took a nice surprise with this movie.
