Clooney Clobbered
7 April 2008 (StudioBriefing)
George Clooney may have wanted to seek treatment in the E.R. over the weekend as he suffered a nasty beating at the box office. Although Leatherheads, the film he directed and starred in, had been expected to earn $15-20 million and thereby win the box office contest, it instead wound up with just 13.5 million and had to settle for second place, according to studio estimates, with some analysts predicting it will actually come in third when Sunday receipts are finally tallied. Sony/Columbia's 21, which surprisingly came in at No. 1 last week, surprisingly came in at No. 1 for the second week in a row with ticket sales of $15.1 million. The Jodie Foster family film Nim's Island from 20th Century Fox came in third with $13.3 million. A third newcomer, the fright film The Ruins placed fifth with $7.8 million. In limited release, Martin Scorsese's documentary concert film Shine a Light, featuring a performance by The Rolling Stones, opened solidly with $1.5 million from 276 theaters, 93 of them giant IMAX venues. Overall, the box office fell 23 percent compared to the same weekend a year ago. Some analysts blamed television's coverage of the NCAA basketball championships, which in particular may have drawn audiences away from the sports-themed Leatherheads.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers: 1. 21, $15.1 million; 2. Leatherheads, $13.5 million; 3. Nim's Island, $13.3 million; 4. Horton Hears a Who!, $9.1 million; 5. The Ruins, $7.8 million; 6. Superhero Movie, $5.4 million; 7. Meet the Browns, $3.51 million; 8. Drillbit Taylor, $3.5 million; 9. Shutter, $2.9 million; 10. 10, 000 B.C., $2.8 million.

Scorsese Missed Out On Filming Richards Arrest
4 April 2008 (WENN)
Director Martin Scorsese was left disappointed he didn't manage to film police arresting Rolling Stones star Keith Richards for the DVD edition of his new rockumentary Shine A Light. Scorsese was flying to Los Angeles from the Berlin Film Festival in Germany, where the concert movie premiered in February, and agreed to drop the guitarist off en route in Newark, New Jersey. Police met the rocker at the airport, where Richards claims he was arrested over a passport mix up - and Scorsese was left watching the saga without being able to film the legend's exchange with airport cops. Richards says, "I got collared by the cops and dragged off. Something about the numbers in my passport, but I think it had to do with supervisors wanting to meet me. Martin saw me physically being arrested. He's sorry he didn't get that scene."

Stones Documentary To Set IMAX Record
1 April 2008 (StudioBriefing)
Martin Scorsese's Shine a Light , a documentary featuring a concert performance by The Rolling Stones, will open on 93 IMAX screens Friday -- the largest number of the giant-screen venues ever to exhibit a movie, edging out Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which opened on 91 IMAX screens. The Paramount Classics film will also be shown in about 177 conventional theaters. Tickets for the IMAX screenings will go for $13. In a statement, Scorsese remarked, "I've always loved looking at IMAX, but to see these images of The Rolling Stones on the biggest canvas is something else altogether." Greg Foster, head of IMAX Filmed Entertainment, added, "Audiences will feel as if they are literally in the front row at the concert." The concert was filmed at the Beacon Theatre in New York in the fall of 2006.

'Light' Shines on Berlinale Opening
7 February 2008 (StudioBriefing)
The Berlin Film festival is set to open tonight (Thursday) with a screening of Martin Scorsese's Rolling Stones concert documentary, Shine a Light. At a news conference earlier today, the Stones' Keith Richards indicated that the group had been approached several times in the past about making films of their concerts -- something, he indicated, that had never really interested him. However, when he heard that director Scorsese wanted to make such a film, he said, "I thought, 'This is interesting.'" The film, he said, is "Martin's movie. We're just the leading men." Scorsese himself acknowledged that he wanted also to capture "the humor, the absurdity of trying to put [a Stones concert] on film." When a reporter observed that the film may also demonstrate the futility of attempting to do so, Stones front man Mick Jagger suggested that it was intended not merely to present a concert on the movie screen. Rather, he said, it's "that night [of the performance] set in amber."

Berlin Film Festival Gets What They Want
16 January 2008 (StudioBriefing)
The Berlin Film Festival has chosen Shine a Light, Martin Scorsese's documentary about The Rolling Stones, to open this year's festival on February 7. Festival organizers said Tuesday that the director and the veteran rock band will attend the screening. In its statement, the organizers said, "Scorsese has created an extraordinary musical film event and given audiences unprecedented access to The Rolling Stones both on stage and off."

Scorsese to Direct George Harrison Film
27 September 2007 (StudioBriefing)
Martin Scorsese, who appears to enjoy making documentaries about celebrated musicians as much as he does dramas about the underworld, is planning to direct a film about George Harrison, the former Beatle who died in 2001, Daily Variety reported today (Thursday). His widow, Olivia, told the trade publication, "It would have given George great joy to know that Martin Scorsese has agreed to tell his story." She said that Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, the two surviving Beatles, had agreed to participate in the project and that Apple Records will permit use of the Beatles' music. Scorsese has previously produced documentaries about The Band (The Last Waltz), Bob Dylan (No Direction Home) and The Rolling Stones (the upcoming Shine a Light).

Scorsese To Depart for Cannes
5 April 2007 (StudioBriefing)
Martin Scorsese will have a full slate of activities laid out for him at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Scorsese, who finally won an Oscar this year (for The Departed) will present a lecture to film students on May 24; present the Camera d'Or prize for best film by a first-time director; announce the creation of the World Cinema Foundation for preserving and restoring classic films; and participate in the odd press conference and media interview to promote Shine a Light, his documentary on The Rolling Stones, which will be seeking a buyer at the Cannes Market.
