Normally, I wouldn't have ever even checked out this show since its title and genre suggest banality and mediocrity and therefore a long run on the Space Channel (Canada's version of the Sci-Fi Channel).
However, the pedigree of director Alan Ball and star Anna Paquin intrigued me and the reputation (fading somewhat recently) of HBO drew me in. It is hard to judge a show like this solely on its first episode, since most of the time is spent setting up the alternate universe of a human world now co-existing with a vampire world. However, overall the set-up does intrigue me and I will give episode two a whirl when it becomes available.
I liked the ambiance of the main setting of the bar interior and the exterior in particular. Paquin's performance stands out as the lonely waitress looking for love stymied by her ability to read people's minds. Brook Kerr, who plays Paquin's friend, shows some potential as Paquin's best friend Tara, whose customer-service skills leave a lot to be desired. The rest of the characters are so far very one-dimensional and the actors who portray them don't seem up to the task of raising their games. Episode two will decide for me whether or not I am around for episode three.
