Christopher Nolan Discusses Bringing 'The Dark Knight' To Life

21 July 2008 10:08 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Christopher Nolan on set of The Dark Knight

Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures Finally, after posting six other interview pieces with eight different people we get to the top of the totem pole with co-writer/director/producer and all-out Dark Knight mastermind, Mr. Chris Nolan. Meeting Chris Nolan was something of a treat considering I love Memento, enjoyed The Prestige and am a fan of Batman Begins and loved The Dark Knight. Nolan is a different kind of a film director in more ways than one, but when it comes to comic book adaptations he has changed the game. His vision of Batman Begins inspired to bring together heavy talent for comic book movies instead of cheap B-list actors. His Batman is the reason we have Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man and Ed Norton in The Incredible Hulk. He proved that treating a comic book movie as more than just

'Hulk' Sequel Appears Unlikely

21 July 2008 1:36 AM, PDT | From syfyportal.com | See recent syfyportal news

It has made $129.9 million so far in domestic box office dollars, but that doesn't seem to be enough for Marvel to revisit the Hulk again in the future outside of an Avengers movie. Director Louis Leterrier, who was promoting "The Incredible Hulk" in his home country of France over the weekend, told reporters that the poor box office take of "Hulk" made it very unlikely there would be another sequel. So far, the film has not pulled in enough money to break even with its estimated $150 million budget, and there was some question on whether or not Ed Norton would return for a sequel. At the same time, Leterrier said potential story ideas were scarce because there were only so many times one could dip into the "anger management issues" well. That would make Hulk perfect for an Avengers ...

Superheroes Show Box Office Strength

15 July 2008 10:38 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The superhero take-over of the box office continued apace over the weekend as Universal's Hellboy II: The Golden Army took over first place with $34.54 million, edging out last week's superhero flick Hancock, which took in $32.08 million. (Another superhero, Batman, is expected to take over next weekend.) In third place was Warner Bros.' Journey to the Center of the Earth, which earned $21.01 million. In fact, Journey, which was designed to be shown in digital 3-D, far surpassed the two leaders in ticket sales at the 954 theaters which were able to show it in that format. The 3-D theaters averaged $12,559 in receipts, while Hellboy II averaged $10,780 and Hancock, $8,091. In its third week, Disney's Wall-E added another $18.79 million to its gross, bringing its total to $163.06 million.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Universal, $34,539,115, (New); 2. Hancock, Sony/Columbia, $32,080,560, 2 Wks. ($164,115,004); 3. Journey to the Center of the Earth, Warner Bros., $21,018,141, (New); 4. Wall-E, Disney, $18,793,588, 3 Wks. ($163,055,900); 5. Wanted, Universal, $11,996,175, 3 Wks. ($112,455,060); 6. Get Smart, Warner Bros., $7,201,376, 4 Wks. ($111,564,176); 7. Meet Dave, Fox, $5,251,918, (New); 8. Kung Fu Panda, Paramount, $4,411,412, 6 Wks. ($202,154,311); 9. The Incredible Hulk, Universal, $2,324,345, 5 Wks. ($129,905,435); 10. Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, Picturehouse, $2,303,054, 4 Wks. ($10,992,641).

Plastic Man? Really?

15 July 2008 9:58 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

One day, we're going to get around to writing this long article about what comic book characters should and should not be adapted into movies. Clearly, The Incredible Hulk isn't everybody's favorite; both films have been outperformed by Fantastic Four movies. On the flip side, Iron Man was a huge hit, and you would think the bigger the comic book star would also be the bigger the movie star, so Hulk should do better. Not the case.

Why?

That's a really good question. We can't say it's star power, because Tobey Maguire and Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman aren't bigger stars than Edward Norton, at least, not clearly bigger stars. It isn't as if they've cast Tom Hanks in one of these movies yet. The Hulk should appeal to audiences because of its tortured character, so one of the only rational explanations I can come up with is they think the effects look cheesy.

Batman Speaks, Talking 'The Dark Knight' with Christian Bale

15 July 2008 12:37 AM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

The man behind the mask... Christian Bale plays Bruce Wayne/Batman in The Dark Knight

Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures I was recently thinking how amazing it actually is to have films based on comic book superheroes starring bonafide actors working under the direction of a bonafide helmer. Christian Bale is a prime example of a man none of us would have thought of a few years ago to star as the Caped Crusader in a new Batman franchise, but here we are. It's 2008 and not only do we have one film starring Bale, but two, and he has led the way for actors such as Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) and Edward Norton (The Incredible Hulk), proving you don't have to be some second rate actor looking for a big break in the summer blockbuster film. No, in fact you can be a highly sought after actor and as long

'Hellboy II' is Burning Up the Box-Office

12 July 2008 3:59 AM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Photo: Universal Pictures Steve Mason has published his early Friday estimates and as it was expected Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is out in front and will take the top spot for the weekend barring a natural disaster that wipes out only Hellboy 2 screens. The red devil opened strong on Friday with an estimated $12.75 million on Friday on its way to an estimated $34 million for the weekend. I am just curious if audiences are going to be as taken with the film as the majority of critics were. I personally did not like it at all as the romance and comedic angles turned me off spectacularly. However, our "Shallow End" columnist David Frank texted me after he saw it only a few hours ago and seemed to enjoy it, believing it to be superior to the first film which grossed a meager $59.62 million at the box-office in total.

Warner Brothers and DC Comics Getting Their Shit Together

11 July 2008 1:29 PM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

It looks like Marvel has officially scared Warner Bros. into action. With the success of Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, and the possibilities on the horizon for a bridge-story with The Avengers (among other independent character films), the studio that is debuting The Dark Knight next week is presently meeting to formulate a strategic effort for its DC Comics film properties according to reports at Hollywood Reporter. As of late, DC projects haven't exactly progressed smoothly (e.g the continued uncertainty with Superman, the start-and-stop with Justice League) and Warner Bros. has little to show at the upcoming Comic-Con, save for Watchmen. Since The Dark Knight is almost assured to be a monster success, the timing of this meeting couldn't be more perfect, or just under the gun. If Warner Bros. and DC can properly leverage the Batman sequel, Marvel might have something to finally worry about. After all,

Kevin's Review: Hellboy II: The Golden Army - Hell Yeah!

10 July 2008 10:36 PM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

Even though Hellboy (Ron Perlman) and girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair) have the complementary hot and hell dynamic going for them, I'm not sure anyone can pull off superhero bonding between a red-skinned, cat-loving demon and a snarky gal that can, literally, "get fired up." Not even Guillermo del Toro. Yet despite the prominence the gifted director gives the troubled storyline in Hellboy II: The Golden Army, the film still manages to be a hot one. The follow-up to the 2004 original, Hellboy II is not an exercise in unconventional relationships (ala Wall-e) so much as it is a wonderful two-hour excursion into the mind and imagination of del Toro. Never have I so readily pushed aside plot as I have with Hellboy II, given the extraordinary scale and creative creatures. Unlike The Incredible Hulk or Iron Man before it (and The Dark Knight on the horizon), Hellboy II doesn't take ...

#1 movie predicted correctly: 11 Weeks in a Row 1. Hancock The streak is in world class trouble this weekend. History suggests that films coming off a July 4th opening drop like stones, but I need Hancock to bleed less than 55% to have my winning weekend. But the main reason I'm taking Hancock to win isn't Hancock or history at all... Estimate: $28.9 million 2. Hellboy 2: The Golden Army I just can't take Hellboy II to win. I can't do it. The film is terrible, and while that shouldn't affect my prediction I want to believe there are less stupid people in the world that will support this. And will this make much more than the first one (which didn't do all that great for the genre)? I have only questions. If it finishes first then down goes my three month streak. Estimate: $26.3 million 3. Wall-e If Wall-e didn't have over 1000 theater counts on

'Incredible Hulk' unlikely to get sequel

9 July 2008 3:30 AM, PDT | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news

Marvel's latest comic book film The Incredible Hulk is unlikely to get a sequel, says Reuters. The Louis Leterrier-directed movie has so far grossed similar box office numbers to Ang Lee's Hulk, which was considered a commercial flop on its 2003 release. Despite taking a more action-oriented approach to the character, The Incredible Hulk has accumulated $$125 million at the Us box office after a month on release. Its predecessor finished its theatre run with $$132 million. A Marvel insider said: "We're happy with the financial results, even if they [only] reach the first film's levels. Is It Too Early to Remake 'Hancock'?

9 July 2008 2:22 AM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

David Frank knows more than you. Care to disagree? Unlike some who feel every remake amounts to a personal affront on their gentleman's honor, I've gone on record saying remakes rarely irk me.* So I say, why not remake Hancock? How about now? Leave the "too soon" charges for those joking about your recently deceased goldfish. Strike while the passion's hot. My friend, the sex therapist, said that once, and wisdom like that goes for things other than when the Viagra takes hold. I'm not saying a Gus Van Sant frame-by-frame remake. Now that'd be madness. I'm thinking something along the lines of Batman Begins or The Incredible Hulk. So a reboot, reworking, reimagining, or whatever word you want to use with "re" as a prefix.** Just because Hancock didn't spring from the comic pages doesn't mean it isn't a viable candidate for a redoing. The current incarnation of Hancock is a frustrating mess,

Top Ten Best Movies Midway Through 2008

Top Ten Best Movies Midway Through 2008 Figuring out the ten worst films over the course of the first six months of 2008 was difficult because there were so many. Unfortunately, figuring out the best films of the first six months wasn't nearly as difficult as it turns out there was really only one film left on the outside along with one major exception. First off, Cloverfield didn't make the list and for what I believe are obvious reasons. As much as Cloverfield is a fun movie to watch the first time you see it there isn't much to enjoy after that. The first 18 minutes or so are worthless set-up pieces that you never want to watch again and the last 60 minutes of the film are still a bit fun, but the mystery behind the film has already been revealed and the unexpected deaths are no longer unexpected and you begin to

'Hancock' Estimates Go from $150M to Just Over $100M

8 July 2008 2:51 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Will Smith, box-office hero!

Photo: Columbia Pictures As Steve Mason points out in his early Friday box-office estimate article, July 4th falling on a Friday is not the best of news. The chances the same number of people heading out to the theater for a movie on a July 4th Friday aren't the same as say a Wednesday. However, that isn't stopping Will Smith's poorly reviewed Hancock from scoring over $100 million in it's five-day weekend along with scoring the second best July 4th performance just behind Spider-Man 2. Hancock scored $41.3 million in its first two-and-a-half days of release thanks to a limited number of screenings on Tuesday, July 1st. The early estimate for Friday are $18 million, playing July 4th number two to Spider-Man 2, which amassed $21.95 back in 2004. Mason's predictions for the rest of the weekend have Hancock bringing in about $103.23 million for the five-day weekend. This will give Will Smith 12 films reaching $100 million,

Box-Office Wrap-Up: Jul. 4 - Jul. 6, 2008

Pretty good three day prediction, right? I mean, if you don't pay attention to the numbers after the first slot that is. Curses. What a bummer. Anyway, let's break this thing down. #1 movie predicted correctly: 11 Weeks In A Row 1. Hancock Still, they've got to be pleased. $107 million free dollars from an unsuspecting public. You've been duped, people! This movie was trash. Result: 66.0 million (My rank: #1, $2.6m off) 2. Wall-e What happened? Why did this falter so? It must have been that whole July 4th on a Friday thing. People skipped the movies in favor of BBQs and fireworks. Can't say that I blame them. Result: 33.4 million (My rank: #2, $11.7m off) 3. Wanted Almost a 60% drop. Yikes. I can blame them for this. What happened guys? I thought we agreed you'd see this one. Ah well, it will make $100 million easily at least. Result: 20.6 million (My rank: #3, $10.7m off) 4. Get Smart Now I'm pissed.

#1 movie predicted correctly: 10 Weeks in a Row 1. Hancock Keep in mind that these are weekend estimates only. Now then, if you're like me and upset that Will Smith didn't record a hit rap song for Hancock I'm proposing some sort of internet petition. I have the opening lyric of the Hancock song ready and everything. "Here come the Haaaaancoooooock / Galaxy defender." Let's get the ball rolling people. Estimate: $63.4 million 2. Wall-e The tough thing about these numbers is getting them to gibe with my five day forecast. Wall-e won't be dropping much though, I can tell you that. Estimate: $45.1 million 3. Wanted It's getting nice buzz which will help it take a chunk out of Hancock's flank. Should have done that song Big Willie. Estimate: $31.3 million 4. Kit Kittredge: An American Girl This is a difficult movie to project in that I haven't ever met a fan. But I suspect they are out there.

Will Smith Is Gold At Box Office

8 July 2008 10:35 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Will Smith displayed his superpowers at the box office over the weekend as his poorly reviewed Hancock opened in first place with $62.6 million, making it Smith's 12th No. 1 opener. Still, Hancock was no Transformers, last year's Fourth-of-July blockbuster, and the overall box office for the year retreated behind 2007's by 0.65 percent to $4.81 billion (versus $4.84 billion), according to Media by Numbers. More significantly, the attendance gap between last year and this widened slightly to 3.46 percent. Overall, the box office recorded $153.19 million in total ticket sales, compared with $165.45 million a year ago, a 7.41-percent decline. Last weekend's top film, Wall-E dropped 48 percent to $32.5 million, while the Angelina Jolie thriller Wanted slipped to third place with $20.1 million, a 61-percent plunge.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. Hancock, Sony, $62,603,879, 1 Wks. ($103,877,446 -- from Tuesday); 2. Wall-E, Disney, $32,509,206, 2 Wks. ($127,196,028); 3. Wanted, Universal, $20,050,070, 2 Wks. ($90,186,395); 4. Get Smart, Warner Bros., $11,109,408, 3 Wks. Will Smith Overpowers Critics

7 July 2008 10:36 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

In the latest demonstration of how little influence film critics are able to exert on the box office these days, the Will Smith starrer Hancock collected an estimated $66 million over the three-day weekend despite an avalanche of negative reviews. In an interview with Bloomberg News, Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media by Numbers, said, "The Sony marketing machine and Will Smith's recognition transcend any [critical] barbs the movie might sustain." In a separate interview with the Associated Press, Dergarabedian called Smith "the most bankable star in the world." Since Hancock opened with two preview screenings on Tuesday, it has taken in $107.3 million. It earned an additional $78 million overseas. It marked Smith's eighth consecutive film to open in first place. Meanwhile, last weekend's champ, Disney/Pixar's Wall-E, slipped to second place with about $33.4 million (a drop of 47 percent), to bring its 10-day total to $128.1 million. Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, the only other film besides Hancock to open wide (it had played in New York and Los Angeles the previous two weeks), proved to be a disappointment, taking in only $3.6 million and winding up in eighth place. The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers:1. Hancock, $66 million; 2. Wall-E, $33.4 million; 3. Wanted, $20.6 million; 4.
