Marvellous comedy from another Era, 18 September 2009
10/10

They don't make em like this anymore. Two top comedians with a host of top stars. These Christmas specials often drew in viewing figures in excess of 20 million with the 1977 special drawing in an audience of plus 27 million.

Figures of this size are unheard of in our multi channel digital age where quality often give ways to choice. The fact is that these specials were national events - if you'd ever wanted to drive at high speed round our very own M25 without meeting any traffic - Christmas day when everyone was watching the show would have been your time (Of course the M25 didn't exist in 1973 - but you could have tried the M1)

I do miss these two guys - not only for their gentle but often very clever comedy - but also the fact that when you watched them - up to half the nation would be watching with you.
