Disappointing would-be cop epic has shady nightclub owner Joaquin Phoenix attempting to save family police officers (father Robert Duvall and brother Mark Wahlberg) from Russian Mafia hit men who have narcotics distribution and murder on their minds. Eva Mendes is also seen, but rarely heard from as Phoenix's seductive Puerto Rican girlfriend. Dull is the best word to describe "We Own the Night". It is a sleep-inducing mess which is way too talkative and with too many clichés to be even remotely interesting. It is a dark and ugly exploitation-styled bore which has basically no cinematic assets going for it. The amazing cast cannot save it from mediocrity and ultimate obscurity. 2 stars out of 5.
