DVD Playhouse—November 2009

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

There’s no way I’m going to get this right. We never say precisely what we ought to when we part, the words are never perfect enough — not even for those of us who get paid to write them…or used to, anyway. I’m sorry to say that this is the last time we’ll walk the Beat together as I'm leaving EW. So I’ll tell you what, Coppers, let’s save the hugs for the end, stuff down the tears (I grant that they’re probably all mine), and take a stroll. I’m ready if you are. »

Christmas is coming early for Bones fans — both literally and figuratively. The rumored Deschanel sister pairing is actually happening, in fact it has already been filmed for the show’s Christmas episode to air Dec. 10. This will mark the first time Emily and Zooey Deschanel will appear on screen together.
Zooey will appear as Margaret Whitesell, a distant relative to big sister Emily’s Dr. Temperance Brennan. According to Zap2It, Brennan’s father (Ryan O'Neal) invited Margaret to spend Christmas with him and Brennan in an episode titled “The Goop on the Girl.” In the episode, Booth and Brennan investigate the explosive death of a man in a Santa suit during a bank robbery. I hope for Zooey’s sake she isn’t the girl with said goop, because — you know — ewww.
Last week, series creator Hart Hanson tweeted about Zooey’s appearance saying: “The Deschanel sisters working it together! »

Curious George. Harold and the Purple Crayon. Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. Classics each and every one. Call it a babysitter in a box or call it a great tool for educating your children, either way what we have on our hands here is 19 hours of story books new and old converted to a digital medium. Some of these genuinely are treasures reincarnated in an animated medium while others are newer stories that have yet to prove their heirloom mettle. However, your average tot won’t care as much about the legacy of a given story as they will about the presentation. A majority of the stories found on these 16 discs have received the full animation treatment from the humble illustration origins, but there are a few in the collection which are little more than scans of the pages being panned over by the camera. After years of speculation and attempted pairings, Zooey and Emily Deschanel will join forces on a December episode of Fox's "Bones." Now that it's been picked up for a full season, expect FlashForward to announce a few casting notes for early 2010 and beyond.
First case in point: Paula Newsome will come aboard the show early next year. The actress - who has guest-starred on Bones, NCIS and played a prominent role on the short-lived Women's Murder Club - will play a doctor on the drama.
No word yet on how this character wil tie in to the rest of the story, but Olivia does work at a hospital, so anything is possible.

Welcome to your Tuesday morning television briefing. Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello is reporting that Bones' 100th episode will in fact be a flashback episode to reveal the first time that Emily Deschanel's Temperance Brennan and David Boreanaz's Seeley Booth worked together. "We’ll be there for the first time those two personalities clashed, Bones executive producer Stephen Nathan told Ausiello. "Events will conspire to make them come out of the case hating each other and vowing that they will never work together again... We’ll also see the introduction of Angela and the genesis of her friendship with Brennan." (Entertainment Weekly's Ausiello Files) Maggie Grace is confirmed to be returning for Lost's sixth and final season, according to TV Guide Magazine. She'll return to Oahu next month to reprise her role as Shannon Rutherford, who was last seen on the series in 2005. "Producers had invited Maggie back earlier, »

Bones is off the air, set to return on November 5, barring a seventh game of the World Series.
But the show's producer at least has cool news to keep fans excited for later this season: on its 100th episode, as previously hinted at it, the series will flash back to the first-ever meeting between Booth and Brennan.
“We’ll be there for the first time those two personalities clashed,” executive producer Stephen Nathan told Entertainment Weekly. “Events will conspire to make them come out of the case hating each other and vowing that they will never work together again.”
What else will be included during this episode?
“We’ll also see the introduction of Angela and the genesis of her friendship with Brennan,” Nathan said. “And we’ll try and work in a Smurf reference, of course. They certainly have been absent from season 5 so far.”
Sounds awesome. Let's hope »

Bones is a show that keeps getting better and better. Good to begin with, it has consistently and intriguingly entertained audiences with mysteries solved by appealing characters who seem to live other than just in weekly episodes. Based on the novels of real-life forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs, fans will not want to miss adding this DVD set to their collections. If you are already a fan of the show, then you know that Season Four of Bones had a great number of stellar moments. First of all the idea of having multiple interns, a new one each episode was nothing short of brilliant. The action and interactions with the various .personalities. made for fun and interest throughout the »
