James Marsh to Record The Vatican Tapes

Looking to further expand upon the possession craze that has begun sweeping the horror community as of late, Lionsgate and Lakeshore Entertainment have partnered to get the ball rolling on the next bit of the devil made them do it mayhem.

According to The Hollywood Reporter James Marsh, the director of the documentary Man on Wire, will be at the directorial helm for the supernatural thriller The Vatican Tapes.

The story centers on a series of events that unfold after a tape gets leaked from the Vatican displaying an exorcism that goes wrong. Chris Borrelli wrote the screenplay based on a story by Borrelli and Chris Morgan.

James Marsh won plaudits and a Best Documentary Oscar for Man On Wire, the story of tightrope artist Philippe Petit and his amazing walk between the towers of the World Trade Centre in 1974. But now he's abandoning the real world for a supernatural thriller called The Vatican Tapes, which is sadly not about the Pope's '80s mix selections.No, instead of Do You Really Want To Hurt Me and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, this is a tale with a horror tinge, about a Vatican tape of an exorcism gone wrong being leaked. We're guessing that the results could resemble a cross between Paranormal Activity and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, but only time will tell.The screenplay's by Chris Borrelli, a former visual effects guy who previously wrote horror movie Whisper and action-fest The Marine 2. British director James Marsh made huge waves with his exhilarating documentary Man on Wire, which is apparently loved by nearly everyone. Now Marsh will jump back to feature films as THR reports he will be helming the supernatual thriller The Vatican Tapes which centers on a series of events that unfold after a tape gets leaked from the Vatican displaying an exorcism that goes wrong. At least they're laying this all out on the table as opposed to The Exorcism of Emily Rose which instead portrayed itself as an Exorcist style horror flick, when it was really just a courtroom drama with unfrightening flashbacks. This Is It was all there was as far as new nationwide releases went this Halloween weekend, but it was sufficient to help propel overall business nine percent higher than the same timeframe last year.

Though it may not be commensurate with the raft of pre-release hype surrounding the movie and Michael Jackson's death, This Is It performed exceptionally well for a concert picture or music documentary, charting second only to the opening of the Hannah Montana concert. It raked in an estimated $21.3 million on approximately 5,500 screens at 3,481 sites, ranking as the fifth highest-grossing Halloween debut on record, and has grossed $32.5 million in five and a half days. Add in foreign grosses of an estimated $68.5 million from 98 countries, and This Is It's five-day worldwide haul was $101 million, which exceeded the lifetime tally of the Hannah Montana concert.

Scott Derrickson to guide 'The Living'

Scott Derrickson, the director of last year's disappointing sci-fi remake "The Day the Earth Stood Still," is now set to helm "The Living," a supernatural thriller for Lakeshore Entertainment.

As with most films hitting early developmental stages, plot details are kept under wraps, so I apologize I don't have any more on this. Variety says the film is based on a pitch by Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman.

Derrickson really launched his Hollywood career in 2005 with "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," a film I mildly enjoyed but certainly didn't love. He followed up with "Day," but that one truly sucked.

Also on Derrickson's radar is "Hyperion," based on Dan Simmons' sci-fi novels "Hyperion" and "The Fall of Hyperion." He also has "Paradise Lost" in development. »

Earlier in the month it was announced that director Scott Derrickson would helm a remake of a Danish thriller called The Substitute for producer Sam Raimi. Now The Day the Earth Stood Still director has sold a new idea that he will co-write and direct for Lakeshore Entertainment, the same company that produced Derrickson's The Exorcism of Emily Rose a few years back.

The new project is called The Living and it was pitched to Lakeshore by Derrickson and his writing pal from Emily Rose, Paul Harris Boardman. The storyline is being withheld but Variety knows that it's in the same vein as Emily Rose, namely a supernatural thriller. Boardman will get a producer credit along with Lakeshore's Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi. »

Director Scott Derrickson has had enough of giant robots and wooden actors who contribute to the Earth standing still. The filmmaker whom many of us love for The Exorcism of Emily Rose is now heading back to the land of the supernatural with his latest flick, The Living.

Variety reports that Derrickson has been tapped by Lakeshore Entertainment to direct the supernatural suspense thriller.

Remaining busy, Scott is also attached to helm The Substitute, a remake of the Danish thriller for Spooky Pictures, the recently launched banner from Sam Raimi's genre label Ghost House.

After last directing Fox's The Day the Earth Stood Still remake from last year, Scott Derrickson has been hired by Lakeshore Entertainment to direct the supernatural suspense thriller The Living. The project is based on an original pitch from Derrickson and producer Paul Harris Boardman. Derrickson last worked with Lakeshore to direct The Exorcism of Emily Rose back in 2005, a film which seemed to be well received in the horror community. I maintain that the greatest news of the week is Danny Trejo starring in "Predators," but I think I've just found a close personal second -- Sam Raimi, director of this year's phenomenal "Drag Me to Hell," is sticking with horror.

Variety reports that Raimi, the puppetmaster behind the "Evil Dead" films and their "Army of Darkness" sequel, will spin a new horror banner out of his pre-existing Ghost House label: none other than Spooky Pictures, which aims to create new thriller franchises for family-friendly audiences. Coincidence? Just a few weeks ago Guillermo del Toro announced that he was setting up Disney Double Dare You, a specialty division specifically for making scary animated films for kids. Now one of the other best scaremasters working today, Sam Raimi, is doing essentially the same thing.
