An Italian website has an interview up with director Peter Jackson. He talks about some upcoming/future projects, including "The Hobbit" briefly. The text is in Italian, but the video is Jackson himself talking in EnglishPeter Jackson is one of my favorite directors. He is certainly one of the best genre guys working right now. And hearing him talk is always inspiring, mostly because he has an interesting perspective on things, but also because he is one of those people that genuinely seems like they love what they are doing, and as an extent, Deserves to be doing what they're doing. Also, his "King Kong" remake seems to be one of those nerd punching bag movies that everyone loves to rag on. Well, I love that film; it's one of my favorite of the past decade. It's pure escapist adventure emotional filmmaking, and I will never understand the backlash it received. »

Director Peter Jackson is busy doing press for "The Lovely Bones," and he's looking fantastic doing it. Jackson has been in Rome this week for the Italian premiere and he's barely recognizable as the Oscar-winning director of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. He lost 70 lbs between the early 2004 awards and the December 2005 premiere of "King Kong" by eating right and working out, and he got laser surgery to lose the glasses. The healthier lifestyle clearly agrees with him as this week in Rome, decked out in a tuxedo with his beard trimmed, he looked a decade younger than his 48 years. "The Lovely Bones" stars Mark Wahlberg, Susan Sarandon and Rachel Weisz and opens in the Us on December 11. Scroll to the bottom to watch the trailer. Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bones" premiered in London on Tuesday night as the 2009 Royal Film Performance and the English papers and domestic trades have already weighed in on the potential Oscar contender. Variety's Todd McCarthy was not a fan saying, "the massive success Jackson has enjoyed in the intervening years with his CGI-heavy "The Lord of the Rings" saga (the source of which receives fleeting homage in a bookstore scene here) and "King Kong" has infected the way he approaches this far more intimate tale. Instead of having the late Susie Salmon occupy a little perch in an abstract heavenly... »

"The Lovely Bones, which was given its premiere last night at the Royal Film Performance in the presence of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, is a domestic tragedy that unfolds under a mushroom cloud of flamboyantly kitsch special effects," reports Wendy Ide in the London Times. "In many ways Alice Sebold's massively successful metaphysical coming-of-age drama was an unexpected choice of movie for Peter Jackson. After the vast undertaking of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, followed by the exuberant, overgrown B-movie that was King Kong, this sentimental tale of a murdered teenager called Susie Salmon [Saoirse Ronan] watching her grieving family from a personal afterlife seems intimate by comparison." Two out of five stars. »

Peter Jackson first film since 2005's "King Kong" had its world premiere Tuesday night as the 2009 Royal Film Performance in London. The drama's stars including Susan Sarandon and Saiorse Ronan were greeted by Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales at his annual charity event. Strangely, three of the films bigger stars, Rachel Weisz, Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci were not in attendance. »

The Lovely Bones is Peter Jackson’s first full length feature film spent in the director’s chair since King Kong, after having spent so many years invested in high budget fantasy and action films. He returns to his roots this time with a very haunting and lovely character story, based on a lauded 2002 novel by Alice Sebold. If you’ve seen the trailer, then you know that the film has plenty of fantastical elements wrapped in a supernatural mold. Ain’t it Cool already has a review of it and lavishes it with profuse praise. While most people have to wait until December 11th for the limited release, MySpace has posted both a clip and a new poster, which you can see below. The poster looks beautiful and artistic, with almost a heavenly use of colors contrasted with the sea of bones under foot. It’s very similar to »

AICN’s Harry Knowles has long cultivated close friendships with powerful filmmakers. Peter Jackson showed him The Lovely Bones before any one else, and now I hear that James Cameron, who often calls Knowles when he wants to promote something, is trying to override studio Twentieth Century Fox’s antipathy toward the Austin-based webmaster (who likes to blast co-chairman Tom Rothman) by giving him Avatar to screen at his annual December 24-hour film marathon Butt-Numb-a-Thon. The Bnat shows classic films as well as such premieres as The Passion of the Christ, Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong, Dreamgirls, Chicago, Magnolia, Knocked Up, 300 and … »

The critical and popular success of Jj Abrams Star Trek last spring ensured that its November 17 release on Blu-ray and DVD will be one of the most eagerly awaited events on the home entertainment calendar. To coincide with the release, Titan Books has published "Star Trek: The Art of the Film", a visual companion to Abrams' reboot of the legendary franchise. Thanks to our friends at Titan we have been able to obtain a preview copy and we're happy to say it's a worthy complement to the movie.
"Star Trek: The Art of the Movie" is not to be confused with "The Art of Star Trek", which was published by Pocket Books and covers the original Star Trek timeline. The new hardcover book's 162-pages are printed on glossy paper, and not surprisingly display more images than words. Nonetheless it covers a wealth of material.

I keep looking for something that will sell me on The Lovely Bones. Once upon a time, Peter Jackson's name would have been enough. It's not that King Kong changed that, but between the problems with Kong and the fact that the story in this new film doesn't grab me (based on what I know about it) I'm in a 'wait and see' holding pattern. More problematic is that the current Us trailer for his new film actively turned me off. I see why people liked it, but the tone felt like an unsuccessful bid to get back to the feeling of Heavenly Creatures. So I'm watching for each new batch of footage with some anticipation. Now there's a new French trailer for the film, but all it really does is replicate the long Us version in a shorter time frame. It is weird, that with the film set »

...premiered in Hollywood. My how things have changed. Remember when we didn't know who Rebecca Hall (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) was or that Christopher Nolan would soon make one of the biggest hits of all time. Remember when people were still regularly talking about Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) and everyone was still hugely fond of Christian Bale? Good times.

The Lovely Bones has been a decade-long project: traversing continents; switching directors; growing in budget; Ryan Gosling fired; Mark Wahlberg hired; delayed for almost a year. Alarm bells start to ring. Despite all the rumours and gossip-mongering Peter Jackson’s latest feature has been, rather cynically, held back for “awards season”. In other words, the studio is unsure of how its product is going to play at the box office, so is hoping critical praise might help.
What started off as a Film Four production with Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsey has turned into an effects-laden, multi-million dollar behemoth. The trailer hit the internet in August and instantly recalled fellow Kiwi filmmaker Vincent Ward’s “beautiful disaster” What Dreams May Come. The similarities in tone and imagery are striking (dodgy wigs included).
The inexorable rise of Peter Jackson appears utterly incongruous given his origins in low budget splatter-horror. But is it? »

Paramount has debuted the first official poster for “The Lovely Bones” directed by Peter Jackson.
“The Lovely Bones” both directed and co-written by Academy Award winning filmmaker Jackson (the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Heavenly Creatures, The Frighteners, King Kong) from the script by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens is an adaptation of best-selling novel by Alice Sebold.
The movie centers on a young girl Susie (Saoirse Ronan) who has been murdered and watches over her family – and her killer – from heaven. She must weigh her desire for vengeance against her desire for her family to heal.
The movie which also stars Mark Wahlberg (Susie’s father), Rachel Weisz (her mother), Susan Sarandon (her grandmother) and Stanley Tucci is scheduled to be released on December 11, 2009.

Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber hopped onto their Vespa together in NYC yesterday. Their preferred mode of transportation may be economical, and it turns out Naomi herself is a wise money choice - she just topped a list of the most "Bankable Actresses in Hollywood." She is ahead of Jennifer Connelly and Rachel McAdams who are second and third respectively. Angelina Jolie, who is the highest paid actress, didn't even make the top 10 and Jennifer Aniston, who has the second biggest paycheck is number six. Naomi often chooses indie films, but there are still movies like King Kong to boost her box office numbers. So tell us - are you surprised that Naomi Watts is the "most bankable" actress in Hollywood? View 5 Photos › Are You Surprised Naomi Is the "Most Bankable" Actress in Hollywood? Yes - Naomi is great, but I figured it would be someone like Angelina or Jennifer. »

And the best investment for your leading lady dollar is...Naomi Watts? Well, there's irony. Her best friend, Nicole Kidman, has been ranked by Forbes as the biggest loser in terms of box office returns, but Watts was recently crowned by the magazine as the actress who affords studios the greatest Roi.
For every dollar Watts is paid, her past three films have grossed $44. The rules are that the actresses must have starred in at least three movies in the past five years that opened in at least 500 theaters. Therefore, King Kong and Eastern Promises make up for The Painted Veil and The International, which weren't profitable at all.
Forbes says, not surprisingly, that Watts works cheap. Given her talent, I'd say that's true. She has one Oscar nomination already (21 Grams), and has been very good over the years, even when the movies are only so-so.

In this time of economic uncertainty and the potential evaporating of the old, reliable Hollywood star system, some math nerds may have saved the jobs of ten lucky actresses. Forbes Magazine has recently completed its annual list of female stars that provide the most bang for the buck. Their poll process is pretty complex. To qualify, actors must have appeared in at least three movies over the past five years that opened on 500 screens or more. Someone then adds up and averages the actors' salary on each film, each film's budget and each film's final gross. This year's winner: Naomi Watts, who earned $44 for each $1 she was paid. Despite starring in interesting movies like The Painted Veil, Funny Games and Eastern Promises, it looks as if Watts' place on the list was snagged mostly by King Kong, which earned $550 million worldwide.

Producers, take note: To get the biggest box office bang for your production buck, hire Naomi Watts.
That's what Forbes magazine says, in its study of return-on-investment for Hollywood actresses.
Watts represents the perfect combination of an actress who earns relatively small paychecks, by Hollywood standards, and stars in some major hits, such as 2005's “King Kong,” which earned $550 million at the worldwide box office.
For every dollar Watts was paid o... »
