Susan Boyle Covers We'd Like To Hear

5 hours ago | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Saying you're disappointed in Susan Boyle's debut album is kind of like complaining to your grandma about how lame you think her local weatherman is. You could do it, but what's the point?

Susan Boyle was not meant for you. Despite racking up hundreds of millions of views on YouTube since April, the infamously dowdy Scottish singer has released a full-length album I Dreamed a Dream that is laser targeted to the over-40 demo. When I unwrapped the disc last week, I have to admit I was excited. I'd heard her cover of the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" and I was blown away by the depth of emotion and richness of Boyle's voice.

But by the time I slogged through predictably schmaltzy takes on "How Great Thou Art," the forgettable Madonna tune "You'll See" and — ugh — the Monkees' "Daydream Believer," I began to wonder if mentor Simon Cowell had not missed a grand opportunity. »

Chico's Lunchbox could usher in a golden age of X Factor feature films

10 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The Welsh-Moroccan powerhouse is lining up a comedy à clef of his stripping days, while Susan Boyle's brother reckons Kathy Bates might be the woman for the Scottish singer's story

The Full Monty was a decent film and all, but it wasn't perfect. Where, for instance, was the troupe of irrepressible breakdancing children? Where were all the oddly patterned shirts? And why, for God's sake, wasn't Robert Carlyle's character a Welsh/Moroccan former goat herder with a catchphrase based on his profound inability to grasp the concept of chronology?

Well, fret no more. All of those problems are about to be ironed out. And, somewhat distressingly, Chico from X Factor is the one who'll be doing the ironing. He's co-written a film with a man who Wikipedia claims is his lodger. It's called Lunchbox. It's a "raunchy comedy about a stripping troupe on tour in Europe". It's based on Chico's own life. »

Art of the Movie Poster #1: The Baader Meinhof Complex

14 hours ago | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

In honor of the film's North American premiere, and its poster of course, the talented folks at Studio No.1 take a moment to discuss process, politics and posters. - It's unlikely I'd find someone who'd argue with me when I say that a memorable movie poster is a rare thing. With that in mind Ioncinema.com brings you the first in our new Poster Spotlight series; The Art of the Movie Poster. Each column will showcase a poster that made us pause, and an interview with its creator(s).Our first eye-catcher is the gritty and stylish North American poster for the seemingly gritty and stylish film, The Baader Meinhof Complex; courtesy of Studio No.1. An adaptation of Stefan Aust's book of the same name, the film focuses on the rising of the Raf (Red Army Faction), a violent terrorist group formed in the late 60's/early 70's in West Germany, »

Source: Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal Split

29 November 2009 11:45 AM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal have split, a source close to the actress tells People. No further details were given. Witherspoon, 33, and Gyllenhaal, 28, costarred in the 2007 movie Rendition, after which rumors started flying about them as an off-screen couple. Vote: Which couple is most likely to make it to 2019?By the summer of 2008, however, the rumors appeared to be confirmed, thanks, in part, to an extended Bastille Day holiday in Paris - followed, the next month, when they were seen in Marrakech, spending a Saturday strolling hand-in-hand, checking out bazaar stalls, before stepping into the shade for lunch, according to reports. »

Reese Witherspoon Talks Trash

23 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | Celebuzz.com | See recent Celebuzz news »

Just how trashy is Reese Witherspoon? To hear her tell it, quite a bit—especially around the holidays. The Walk the Line actress recently appeared on The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien to reveal her sneaky method of dealing with excess refuse: “I like to throw things away. I’m obsessed with garbage. After a holiday or a birthday, I have tons and tons of garbage and it always overflows and I always sort of peek out late at night and look at the neighbors’ garbage can and it’s, like, empty. They’re like these amazing people that have no trash...So, if I have a particularly... »

New Footage From Knight & Day with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz

19 November 2009 2:30 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

This just in: Tom Cruise still does his own stunts and Mary Hart still thinks it's goddamn amazing. Ever since Cruise's romantic action comedy changed its title from the serious-sounding Wichita to the jump-out-a-castle-windowish, Knight & Day, I don't think any of our readers have wondered, "How is that film going?" And even though the current title befits a high concept Matt LeBlanc comeback vehicle, the lack of awareness is odd since Knight is due next summer and directed by James Mangold, who can aptly do the macho-thing (3:10 to Yuma), the girl-thing (Girl, Interrupted), and in between (Walk the Line). In a Vanilla Sky reunion, Cameron Diaz co-stars with Cruise as the romantic interest. She has plenty of happy things to say about him (and the flick's dangerous stunts with footage!) after the jump... Like many of our readers, I too was non-plussed to see that the footage above (and »

Witherspoon Is A Garbage Lady

15 November 2009 5:36 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Reese Witherspoon may have sparked a community controversy after confessing on U.S. TV she dumps her excess garbage in neighbours bins.

The actress was promoting her new perfume on The Tonight Show on Friday when she opened up about her garbage "obsession".

The Oscar-winning Walk The Line star told shocked host Conan O'Brien, "I like to throw things away. I'm obsessed with garbage.

"After a holiday or a birthday, I have tons and tons of garbage and it always overflows and I always sort of peek out late at night and look at the neighbours' garbage can, and it's, like, empty. They're like these amazing people that have no trash.

"So, if I have a particularly bad day, where I have a lot of extra garbage, I go and take my garbage and put it in theirs."

And the pretty star is not proud when it comes to crunching her trash down: "I also put on rubber boots if there's too much garbage and I'll stand on the garbage and smash the garbage down... I'm, like, a garbage compactor." »

London Film Festival Closing Gala: Nowhere Boy

6 November 2009 8:00 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Dir: Sam Taylor Wood Cast: Aaron Johnson, Kristen Scott Thomas, Anne Marie Duff, David Morrisey, David Threlfall, Thomas Brodie Sangster It must be said that British cinema did not promote itself especially well at this year’s London Film Festival. ‘Don’t Worry About Me’ and ‘Kicks’ failed to make any positive mark on the critics and audiences that turned out to see them; and while ’44 Inch Chest’ and ‘The Disappearance of Alice Creed’ boasted fantastic casts and gritty aesthetics, they were poorly written and suffered a similar fate. Fortunately, festival organiser Sandra Hebron had one more card up her sleeve for the closing gala… ‘Nowhere Boy’. The film explores the teen years of one of the nation’s most beloved yet mysterious musical figures… John Lennon. The project has been developed by Ecosse (perhaps the most British production company around after a host of period dramas and adaptations of »

Reese Witherspoon Sheds Some Light On Her Untitled Project With James L. Brooks

3 November 2009 12:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Reese Witherspoon picked up an Oscar in 2005 for her performance as June Carter in the Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line," but she's been fairly quiet since then. Working of course, but there's one listing on IMDb for her that's had me curious for ages. After all, it's not every day that you pair a performer of her caliber with James L. Brooks, executive producer of "The Simpsons," for an as-yet-untitled comedy also starring Jack Nicholson, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson. So when MTV reporter Akshay Bhansali ran into Witherspoon last week at the Avon Foundation for Women Awards Gala red carpet, he just had to ask her for an update, perhaps even a title, on the mysterious project.

"We don't have a title, we just wrapped on Saturday," Witherspoon said. "We've been shooting it for the past six months." And what exactly is "it"? Previous reports indicated that the »

Reese Witherspoon finds 'Rule #1'

30 October 2009 12:12 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon boarded a whole series of upcoming projects recently, and the latest she's considering to star in and produce is the Terrel Seltzer-scrioted "Rule #1" for Fox Searchlight.

The Hollywood Reporter says the film follows a New York woman who develops a friendship with a Puerto Rican girl with attention deficit disorder. Seltzer's credits include 1996's comedy "One Fine Day."

Witherspoon was recenlty heard in the mediocre animated flick "Monsters vs. Aliens," and before that she was seen in the disappointing "Four Christmases." She recently wrapped a comedy by James L. Brooks.

Witherspoon totally deserved her Oscar for "Walk the Line," but I feel her projects following that film failed to stick with me. She'll also soon star in a film by Cameron Crowe and in 'Pharm Girl." »

She has it all - a successful Hollywood career, famous boyfriend and beautiful kids - but when it comes down to it, Reese Witherspoon says she thinks of herself as a single mom making it through the day. ReThink Review: Amelia -- Yup, It's a Biopic

24 October 2009 12:39 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

The biopic pattern/trap in films is a hard one to avoid. Follow the typical biopic structure seen in Ray and Walk the Line (formative childhood incident, early struggle, meteoric rise, alcohol-/drug-/fame-/infidelity-induced fall, redemption) and you're accused of being formulaic. Attempt to reveal little-known, potentially darker aspects of a luminary's life and you're accused of trashing a legend or attempting to rewrite history. So Mira Nair's film about Amelia Earhart, Amelia, sort of does neither. Unfortunately, it's still not very good. Watch the trailer below. I hardly knew anything about Earhart before seeing Amelia -- and I didn't feel like I knew much more when I left. Instead of showing scenes from Earhart's youth to explain how she might have developed her love of flying and desire to break gender barriers, the film starts when she is already a pilot and has been... »

Wichita Becomes Knight and Day

14 October 2009 11:53 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

First it was called Trouble Man, then Wichita, then Untitled Wichita Project, but now it seems Fox has finally settled on a title for the action-spy-comedy-thriller starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. It's Knight and Day. Wasn't worth the wait really, was it? Still, it doesn't change the fact that we're liking the sound of the film itself, in which a blind date between Diaz and Cruise turns into a globetrotting, twisting, turning adventure, apparently with some sort of long-life battery as the macguffin.Paul Dano, Peter Sarsgaard, Viola Davis, Olivier Martinez, Maggie Grace and Mark Blucas are the co-stars, and the director is James Mangold (3:10 To Yuma, Walk the Line). The release is pencilled in for next July, by which time the title may well have changed half a dozen more times. »

Michael Buble Dominates Kiss On Billboard Chart

Backstreet Boys are back with a #9 debut.

Michael Bublé's Crazy Love

You already knew Oprah Winfrey had the power to make any book she deems worthy a blockbuster, but the queen of all media is proving to be a musical kingmaker as well. A week after appearing on Winfrey's show, smooth crooner Michael Bublé will top the Billboard 200 charts with his latest, Crazy Love, on modest sales of 132,000.

Bublé managed to pull the feat off after pushing his album up from October 13 to an earlier, off-cycle Friday (October 9) release to coincide with the Winfrey appearance, dealing a harsh blow to legendary greasepaint rockers Kiss in the process. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees were looking like shoo-ins to land the first-ever #1 debut in their 30-plus-year career with the bargain-priced three-cd Wal-Mart exclusive Sonic Boom, but they will have to settle for #2 after moving just 108,000 copies. »

Tom Cruise's 'Wichita' Turns to 'Knight & Day'

13 October 2009 4:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Tom Cruise has been in Boston (what, haven't you read the reports of Suri sightings in Beantown?) filming what was previously known as Witchita, a new film from Fox co-starring Cameron Diaz that is billed as a spy comedy romance thriller. Well, the film that has been blowing sh*t up in Massachusetts has the new title Knight & Day, as well as an impressive roster of new cast members.

In addition to Cruise, Diaz, Paul Dano, Maggie Grace, and Marc Blucas, Knight & Day has added Oscar nom Viola Davis, thespian Peter Sarsgaard, and sexpot Olivier Martinez to the cast.

As Jen Yamato pointed out, this sounds like it could be successfully aimed at the female audience, but can audiences accept the idea of Tom Cruise as a Clooney-type dreamboat? Can he still be funny? (Funny on purpose -- not funny like in Valkyrie.) Will female audiences be turned off by Diaz? »

James Mangold’s Witchita Starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz Turns to Knight And Day

13 October 2009 10:24 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Previously known as “Witchita” and once known as “Trouble Man”, the upcoming Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz film will now be titled “Knight and Day”, which sounds like a title Kenneth the Page would come up with when pitching a sitcom about a medieval knight transported to modern times and falling in love with a woman with the last name “Day”. Hit the jump for details on the film and why its potential success may have little to do with its lead actors.

15 years ago, Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, would have been able to make this an easy summer blockbuster. It was only eight years ago when they opened “Vanilla Sky” to a $25 million opening weekend even though it’s an almost shot-for-shot remake of the mindfucking Spanish film, “Abre Los Ojos”. But 15 years ago, people didn’t think Tom Cruise had gone off the deep end and Cameron Diaz »
