• IFC Films and Mpi Media Group gave Fango the first look at cover art for their DVD release of Pontypool (pictured), the acclaimed and unusual zombie thriller starring Stephen McHattie. Also coming this winter from the two companies is another well-received genre film, the Argentinean ghost story The Appeared.
Directed by Bruce McDonald and scripted by Tony Burgess from his book, Pontypool (streeting January 26; see our review here) casts McHattie as a shock jock who, one cold early winter morning, starts receiving mysterious reports from outside about violent and frightening acts committed by the local townspeople. It turns out that they’re infected with a spreading plague that is transmitted via speech and turns them into bloodthirsty killers. In The Appeared (a.k.a. Aparecidos, out January 12), writer/director Paco Cabezas spins the tale of a brother and sister who discover a diary documenting horrific murder and torture 20 years before. »

In the early '80s, an unknown director (Sam Raimi) took a miniscule budget and crafted what would become the cult horror-comedy The Evil Dead. That movie is still fun to watch today for its ingenuity and its ability to juggle both straight horror elements and hilarious satire. But the gruesome dismemberments and multi-colored bodily fluids (not to mention a very disturbing, not-so-subtly-suggestive use of tree limbs) were enough to earn the movie an X rating (changed to an Nc-17 when the X rating was laid to rest in the early '90s).
Raimi has of course reached stratospheric heights since then, crafting two larger-budget sequels and helming the massively successful Spider-Man franchise. Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell went on to relative fame as a cult-movie icon, using his leading-man looks and his impeccable timing to forge a career out of schlocky comedy genre-hybrids, such as Bubba Ho-Tep and the »

Anyone else going to Texas Book Festival this weekend? I figure I haven't had quite enough fest madness with Austin Film Festival, so I'm planning to head down to the Capitol on Saturday and/or Sunday to shop for books, meet authors, and generally have a good time like the bookworm I am.
But since I'm also a film geek, I'm interested in a couple of movie-related events that are part of Texas Book Festival this year:
Austin Film Festival is co-sponsoring the "Survivin' Hollywood: Three Texas Movie Pros" panel on Sunday at 2 pm in Capitol Extension Room E2.014. The panel includes authors Robert Hinkle, Gary Kent, and Billy Taylor, three Texans who have recently written books about working in Hollywood. You may remember Kent's reading/signing event at BookPeople back in July. Aff co-founder Barbara Morgan will moderate. This looks like a hoot, and I'm hoping to be there. »

This Is It opens this Wednesday and it's sure to make a bajillion dollars by drying the tears of a million overwrought fans. When This Is It makes it big, it will unleash a cacophony of other Michael Jackson projects headed towards theaters and ready to take your money. Because I'm always eager to embrace the gradual moral and ethical decay of society, I'm here to help. Sure you can do the inevitable biopic but once that's done you'll have to start thinking outside the box. Before you cash-in on the King of Pop's legacy, Hollywood, consider stealing these ideas: Bubba Captain Eo It's only a matter of time before people start claiming Michael Jackson pulled an Elvis and is actually alive out there somewhere. Meanwhile they've been promising a sequel to Bubba Ho-Tep for quite awhile now. It only makes sense to combine these two pop confluences. Why not »

Paranormal Activity is so last week. The latest inexpensive horror flick to catch audiences attention is Ti West's '80s throwback The House of the Devil. Starring Jocelin Donahue as the babysitter in peril, The House of the Devil has already scored with the critics and will open in New York, Los Angeles and Austin on Oct. 30. But since it was purchased through Magnolia Pictures' and their genre arm Magnet, it's also one of the movies you can see now through the company's Ultra VOD, an exclusive 30-day video-on-demand window Before it opens in theaters. Longtime Sam Raimi collaborator and "Spider-Man" cameo aficionado Bruce Campbell is said to have a "meaty role" in "Spider-Man 4," but whether that means he'll play one of the film's villains or just have a larger guest stint is unclear at the moment.
Right now, Splash Page readers have the opportunity to weigh in on who Campbell should play in the fourth "Spider-Man" movie, but the brainstorming doesn't end there!
Campbell—an absolute superstar in the geek genre thanks to the "Evil Dead" franchise, "Bubba Ho-Tep" and more—would be great in a variety of comic book roles outside of "Spider-Man 4," don't you think?
Personally, I think that Campbell works best in a supporting capacity when it comes to established franchises—so given that caveat, here are five supporting comic book roles that I think the actor would knock out of the park.

Ya gotta hand it to Director Don Coscarelli (Phantasm, Bubba Ho-Tep), if nothing else he's managed to single handedly bleed the Phantasm name Completely dry. The man has made no less than Four Phantasm films, which is true dedication for a series that of late has not been given much love. At some point Coscarelli has to sit back and ask himself why he's doing this. I myself love the Phantasm series, even the direct to video drek, so news of another super-secret Phantasm project actually has me quite giddy. And the best part? I think I know what it is... Horror Yearbook reports that a new Phantasm project has been 'lensed and is nearly finished'. We've heard rumblings for a while so I guess... »

We reported earlier that Jay Woelfel's Live Evil had won an theatrical release of 300 screens starting September 18th, as well as a DVD release in mid-November. There's been an update to this story, in that we recently learned that the film is also getting a premiere at the Sci-Fi Center in Las Vegas.
Live Evil tells the story of vampires having trouble surviving in a world where the blood supply has become polluted by drugs and STDs. "I am basically a part time resident of Las Vegas, especially during football season," producer Mark Terry says. "One of my goals was to have a screening here because if there was one city in the world that would 'get' this movie it would be Vegas."
Live Evil also stars Lee Perkins (KatieBird*Certifiable Crazy Person), Chuck Williams (Bubba Ho-tep), filmmakers Jeff Burr (Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III) and Sean Cain (Silent Night, »

When Bruce Campbell portrayed a still-living Elvis in Bubba Ho-Tep, it was a rite of passage for one of the coolest guys in the business. You could see him playing Elvis many years earlier without the benefit of the sequined jumpsuit. But he decided not to return to director Don Coscareli's sequel, which is scheduled to follow the original in 2011, some nine years after Elvis and a black JFK first came into our lives from their retirement home.
So who do you get to play a perfect Bruce Campbell role if Campbell isn't available? Well, I wouldn't immediated think Hellboy, but yes, Ron Perlman has signed on for Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires, and he says there's a good chance it could start filming soon.

This week:
Aliens invade the box office with District 9; get ready to see more Saw; Elvis talks Bubba Nosferatu; St Elmo’s Fire gets remade; Dennis Quaid and Tim Allen join Ron Shelton in Q School, while Maggie Q looks for a Priest; Godzilla may be going on the warpath again; Sony takes a dose of Doctor Parnassus and Wall Street 2 adds another cast member.
Box Office
It looks like originality won out at the box office for a change. Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 banked a cool $37 million over the weekend. The Peter Jackson produced Sci-Fi film had a negative cost of just $30 million and with great reviews it looks like this could do well in the long run too.
GI Joe: The Rise Of Cobra had an average drop from last weekend’s surprisingly high take. Down just around 60% (which is pretty middle of the road »

This weekend, we remember Elvis Presley on the August 16 anniversary of his untimely passing, in 1977. It has been a hard summer in that regard, as we've said goodbye to pop culture icons as massive as Michael Jackson and John Hughes. Presley was the original though, the very first rock star. He came screaming out of pop culture's embryo with an electric guitar and lasciviously swaying hips. The King was a legend long before he left us
As we all know of course, Elvis never died. No, none of that ridiculous "he's living with aliens on another planet" conspiracy nonsense. Elvis never really died because he continues to influence the arts, even to this day. Not just in music, but in film as well. Whether he's a sexual deviant, an invisible friend or even a mummy-hunting geriatric, The King lives on in our hearts, minds and movie theaters, and he will »

When Paul Giamatti was rumored to play the King's manager Col. Parker in a sequel to the absolute little gem Bubba Ho-tep, it felt as just too good to ever have even the smallest chance of being true. Especially since Bruce Campbell kept bumming us out by saying he himself wasn't doing it. But then Giamatti dropped The bomb: Elvis is alive and well, and looking like...Ron Perlman. The words "F*ck" and "Yeah" came to mind. Talking to Fangoria Radio this week, Hellboy's... »

Ron Perlman, speaking with Fangoria Radio, gave the world an update on his long-gestating follow-up to Don Coscarelli's Bubba Ho-Tep. In the new film Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires, Perlman will be replacing Bruce Campbell as Elvis in what is sure to be an over-the-top adventure unlike anything we've ever seen.
Perlman hopes to shoot the film in the fall, stating, "Well, I have this window that's about to open. I'll be done shooting Sons of Anarchy in September, and we're hoping to get into production on Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires in my hiatus between seasons two and three. I just spoke to Paul Giamatti (set to play Elvis' manager, Colonel Tom Parker) and Don Coscarelli this morning, and we're just moving the ball down the field, trying to get her done."

Speaking to Fangoria Radio, Ron Perlman has given an update on the status of Bubba Nosferatu, the vampiretastic follow-on from Don Coscarelli's Elvis vs. the Mummy gem, Bubba Ho-Tep. Apparently he will have a window into which the shoot may be squeezed, coming right up he wraps the current season of Sons of Anarchy in September. Having spoken to Coscarelli and co-star Paul Giamatti, Perlman seemed confident that they could all work it out in time and get cameras rolling. Fangoria also let slip the casting of Angus Scrimm as "a Boris Karloff-like horror star who Elvis meets up with in Las Vegas on the set of a vampire movie." This would be Claude Killgore, who we meet during the flashbacks to the 70s that make up half of the film and, knowing Coscarelli, I already pictured Scrimm in the role when I was reading the screenplay. While talking with Fangoria Radio recently to promote his new film I Sell The Dead, Hellboy star Ron Perlman gave hosts Debbie Rochon and Tony Timpone an update on the long-gestating Bubba Nosferatu project. In the Bubba Ho-tep (pictured left) sequel/prequel, Perlman will don the sequined Elvis suit previously donned by Bruce Campbell in the 2004 sleeper written and directed by Phantasm guru Don Coscarelli, who encores on the follow-up.
“Well, I have this window that’s about to open,” Perlman revealed. “I’ll be done shooting [his cable series] Sons Of Anarchy in September, and we’re hoping to get into production on Bubba in my hiatus between seasons two and three. I just spoke to [actor] Paul Giamatti [set to play Elvis’ manager, Colonel Tom Parker] and Don Coscarelli this morning, and we’re just moving the ball down the field, trying to get her done.”

Written & directed by Don Coscarelli (Bubba Ho-tep), Phantasm II starred James LeGros, Reggie Bannister, Angus Scrimm, Paula Irvine & Samantha Phillips.
