This is an excellent comedy . Sachin directs it with extreme élan , and he is so well supported by the first - rate cast comprising of Ashok Saraf , Nilu Phule , Kishori Shahane and the impeccable Supriya that there is just no dull moment right from the start . Witty punches and retorts fly thick and fast and one just can't stop laughing through it all .
It is the story of Supriya who arrives at Nilu Phule's bungalow as a domestic helper in a party . Supriya wants to marry a rich man , so that she can enjoy life . Opportunity arrives in the form of Nilu Phule's America - returned , well - mannered , charming son Sachin . However , there is a catch - Sachin has vowed that he will marry a widow only , so that he can give her a dignified position in the society . Taking advantage of the fact that Sachin has never seen her , Supriya poses as a widow before him , effects an entry in his house , and succeeds in charming him and his family . They decide to get married .
Meanwhile , we are introduced to another couple of lovers - Ashok Saraf and Kishori Shahane . Ashok is working as the secretary to Kishori's father Jayaram Kulkarni . Ashok is also a wannabe actor who has lent his photographs to a wannabe theatreperson , Macchindra Kambli . Jayaram Kulkarni does not approve of Ashok Saraf , so Ashok is in a rut .
Nilu Phule wants to know the name and photo of Supriya's deceased husband , so she runs for help to Macchindra Kambli , who is her uncle . He lends her Ashok Saraf's photo by mistake , and she shows it to Nilu Phule , pretending that he is her deceased husband .
Nilu Phule is Jayaram Kulkarni's friend . It so happens by chance that he visits Jayaram's office for a chat and sees Ashok Saraf there . He immediately recognizes Ashok's face and realizes that his son is being fooled by Supriya . Now he decides to turn the tables on Supriya by asking Ashok Saraf to " return " as Supriya's husband , so that she won't be able to marry Sachin , and we know that the FUN HAS JUST STARTED .
Ashok Saraf is at his impeccable best in the second half , watch out for the scene where he gets drunk and argues with Nilu Phule . Supriya is a scene - stealer . Even as we know that she is dishonest , we cannot help but sympathize with her and curse Nilu Phule , who carries his villainous act off with style . Sachin is good , but his role is sidelined by the others .
Script and dialogues ( Vasant Sabnis ) are hilarious . They lift the film to an outstanding level . Some memorable scenes are - when Supriya is trying to woo Sachin by singing " Na koi umang hai " from Kati Patang , the whole second half and the climax , which is a well - thought culmination . It shocks !
Music is excellent , too .
What more can I say ? This is one film that can be watched again and again without getting bored even once .
