J.J. Abrams’ career blossomed when he introduced Sidney Bristow and her Sd-6 problems to the world in the ABC spy show Alias. The Bad Robot head honcho is now poised to return to the TV spy game with a new spy show, this time about two spies who also happens to be married. No word if they know about each other’s identities, but considering that the “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” angle has been explored already (in the movie and a would-be TV show that never got off the ground), I’m gonna give Abrams the benefit of the doubt and say he’s not going to tread the same old territory. Since Abrams is known for his spy adventures on TV, the show, which is created by Abrams and his Felicity comrade Josh Reims, generated quite the bidding war between the networks. According to The Wrap, the project finally »

Welcome to your Thursday morning television briefing. The Wrap's Josef Adalian is reporting that J.J. Abrams is returning to the spy business with a new potential series project with writer/executive producer Josh Reims (Felicity, Dirty Sexy Money) and executive producer Bryan Burk that is the subject of a heated bidding war with several broadcast networks including ABC, NBC, and CBS. The untitled project, from Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot, follows a husband and wife who work as spies. According to Adalian, the script is described as a "fun romp" in the style of classic television spy adventures. (The Wrap) Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello is reporting that Reiko Aylesworth (24, Lost) has been cast in Season Three of FX's legal drama Damages in a recurring role. Details about who Aylesworth--who starred in the original pilot for ABC drama series The Forgotten--will be playing are being kept firmly under wraps. (Entertainment »

Watching Triage made this lily-livered film writer want to both be a war reporter and never, ever be a war reporter. Set in 1988, the film stars Colin Farrell as Mark Walsh, an Irish photojournalist who returns from an especially hairy assignment on the front lines of the Kurd-Iraqi conflict with scars both physical and psychological. The title refers to the process by which the gravely wounded are sorted on the battlefield, where medical equipment is minimal and caves double for emergency rooms. When the film opens, Mark and his colleague, David (Jamie Sives), are photographing a Kurdish doctor (an excellent Branko Djuric) as he places colored tickets on bedridden victims. Yellow means the casualty is salvageable. Blue means it is not. Mark gets squeamishly close to the action, capturing the patients' torment, and clicking away as the doctor euthanizes the terminally injured with the aid of a handgun. David, meanwhile, »

Last month, it was announced that "Alibi," a Top Cow comic written by Joshua Hale Fialkov and illustrated by Jeremy Haun, was tagged for adaptation by "Surrogates" producer Mandeville Films. A story of twin brothers who lead very different lives (one is a deadly government agent while the other is a wealthy socialite), "Alibi" has only had one issue published—but it was enough to catch the attention of Hollywood.
I recently had a chance to talk with the president of Top Cow, Matt Hawkins, to get a little more info on the deal and what they have planned for the project. As one of the co-creators of "Alibi," Hawkins has a particular affection for the project, and he shared his thoughts on where it's at and where he'd like to see it headed.
MTV: What's happening with "Alibi" right now?
Matt Hawkins: We’ve been looking for writers. »

Universal has acquired the rights to a biopic of country music legend Hank Williams, reports Variety. 821 Entertainment Group and Strike Entertainment will team up to produce the movie, which is being developed in cooperation with the Hank Williams estate. Strike Entertainment's Mark Abraham (Children Of Men, Spy Game) is penning the script, using Colin Escott's biography of the singer as a primary resource. Nashville-based 821 Entertainment Group and Strike Entertainment have teamed to turn the life of country music icon Hank Williams into a feature film, report the trades. Marc Abraham, a Strike Entertainment partner, will pen the screenplay. Williams ranks high among the most influential country music singer-songwriters, and he lived a life as hard as any character in a country song. After growing up dirt poor in Alabama during the Depression, Williams skyrocketed to fame with 11 No. 1 hits, including classics "Cold, Cold Heart," "Your Cheatin' Heart" and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." Williams also suffered from spina bifida, which led him to turn to alcohol and morphine for pain relief. Haunted by demons and bad habits, Williams died in 1953 at age 29. On one side of the estate is singer Hank Williams Jr., and on the other is Jett Williams, the illegitimate daughter of the late singer, born days after he died. »

As we explained in our UK releases article published earlier today, we have a double edition for you this week after we missed lasts week’s round up because of some technical difficulties that have now been resolved.
The last two weeks of new releases in North America haven’t been particularly great, especially if you compare them with the stacked release list for the 19th of May, which featured a whole bunch of must have discs. As always, check out our “pick of the week” and links to all of the new releases below.
Highlights this week start with our pick for the UK releases a couple of weeks back with Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber’s “Defiance” which we would still recommend, The BBC has another incredible nature documentary to follow up “Planet Earth” with in “Nature’s Most Amazing Events” which features more stunning HD footage, and »

Chicago – Universal Home Video is releasing a wave of titles timed for Father’s Day gifts. Some of their choices - “Field of Dreams,” “Fletch” - seem like logical picks for a better HD daddy day than another striped tie while others seem chosen purely because they have the word “Men” or “Man” in the title - “Children of Men,” “Cinderella Man,” “Inside Man”.
Most are pretty good and some are great. Pick your favorite and give it to your Blu-Ray pop.
“Inside Man” will be released on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009.
The other five titles were released on Tuesday, May 26th, 2009.

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Falling Down I just posted my review of the Blu-ray edition of the new Warner Bros. release of Falling Down, which you can read here. It was the first time I had seen the 1993 release and while I liked it I can't immediately recommend it as a blind buy for anyone that hasn't seen it in the past. It's a film that depends on the audience's acceptance of the storyline, since it slowly unravels and can be considered quite scattered when the ending is still yet unknown. However, it's definitely a film to check out and one I would bet many will truly love if you don't already. Universal Blu-ray

A decent assortment of new DVDs in stores this week, from My Bloody Valentine 3-D to the early surprise hit of the year, Paul Blart: Mall Cop (err... you'll have to look past those ones to get to the good stuff). The Tom Cruise Nazi thriller Valkyrie is in stores today, and might make a good double bill with Fritz Lang's 1941 film Man Hunt which is hitting DVD for the first time. Then there's Howard McCain's viking vs alien epic Outlander, which might make a good double bill with The Asylum's direct-to-video monster battle Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus! The Star Wars comedy Fanboys is finally out on DVD (in the U.S. at least), along with the first season of True Blood and the seventh season of 24. See anything worth picking up? This week probably stacks up as the best for new releases this year - especially considering the range of different titles and genres available - so there should be something for everyone in this edition. As always, check out our “pick of the week” and links to all of the new releases below.
First up, we have a spectacular 6 disc “Terminator 2 Limited Edition Complete Collector’s Set in an Endoskull”, which is by far the most extravagant and innovative release on this format so far. It contains every version of the film you could want, and more special features than you can shake a T-1000 at. And the Endoskull looks Fantastic. Bear in mind, this is a limited release and no one is sure whether further copies of the set will be issued, so you might want to snap one up quickly. There is also a far more affordable 2-disc “Skynet” edition of the film, »

When Paramount added Three Days of the Condor to their list of upcoming Blu-ray titles it came as something of a "that's out of nowhere" moment, but I guess that is a good thing since it shakes things up a bit and tests the waters to see who is paying attention. The 1975 feature is directed by the late Sydney Pollack and stars Robert Redford as Joe Turner (code name Condor), a CIA agent whose only duties involve reading. Sounds like a hot job eh? This guy, at first glance, is as much a spy as is any bookworm you may know. Of course, his reading is a bit more detailed than trying to find out whodunit at the end of an Agatha Christie novel, but that isn't to say the way the "dunit" was done wouldn't be of interest to him. As he says in the film, "I am not a spy. »

Paramount Centennial Collection Paramount Studios releases two more classic titles from its library on special edition DVD: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is John Ford’s last masterpiece (although he would go on to direct two more very good films) from 1962: about an Eastern lawyer (James Stewart) who travels west only to find primal brutality in the form of sadistic bandit Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin, great as always) and pragmatic brutality in local rancher Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), each two sides of a coin that represent a way of life slowly dying out as Stewart’s modern brand of civilization tames the West. A perfect film, period. Howard Hawks’ El Dorado is essentially a remake of his earlier classic Rio Bravo, with John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and a young James Caan as lawmen joining forces against corrupt cattle barons. Great fun. Two disc sets. »

Admittedly, I like Tony Scott movies more than most critics and I wonder why that is. After all, he has a visual style you can recognize, he keeps the action moving, and he usually works with good if not great actors. I mean, in an environment where we forgive plot holes and bad character development in superhero movies because of the spectacle, here's a guy who gives you spectacle every time out and he can't catch a break.
In the last ten years, he's only made one bad movie (Domino), but the rest of the filmography over that time includes Man on Fire, Deja Vu, Spy Game, and Enemy of the State, and frankly, those are all good, slick action movies. His next one, a remake of The Taking of Pelham 123, again combines his frenetic style, Denzel Washington, and technology, but I wonder if it'll get the same kind of »

Tony Scott sure likes his trains, because the filmmaker is set to direct Fox's upcoming thriller "Unstoppable."
Scott just recently wrapped the remake of "The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3," about a group of criminals hijacking a New York City subway train.
According to Variety, "Unstoppable" focuses on "an unmanned runaway train that is carrying a cargo of toxic chemicals. An engineer and his conductor find themselves in a race against time."
The trade also said Scott is working on the script with Mark Bomback, whose credits include "Race to Witch Mountain." Martin Campbell was originally set to direct "Unstoppable."
Okay, let's take a quick look at Scott's recent flicks. I admit I really enjoyed "Deja Vu," although I can't say the same about "Domino." "Man on Fire" wasn't excatly intriguing either, but I loved "Spy Game."
Scott's "The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3," which stars Denzel Washington and John Travolta, opens June 12, 2009. »

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed I apologize for the delay in publishing today's newly released DVDs and Blu-rays, but I posted enough articles last night I didn't want anything to get buried and it appears it was the right decision as only minutes ago I received word Slumdog Millionaire will be hitting DVD and Blu-ray on March 31, which wouldn't have made it into the report had I posted any earlier. As for today's releases there are a couple of titles worth noting that you may want to pick up including a film that I believe was the biggest Oscar snub of the year. Let's see what's out there... I've Loved You So Long Here it is, right off the bat. The biggest Oscar snub did not belong to The Dark Knight it belonged to the absence of I've Loved You So Long which at »

Tony Scott will soon return to the big screen with a remake of "The Taking of Pelham 123."
In the film, John Travolta plays a criminal mastermind who hijacks a New York subway train and threatens to kill passengers unless he receives a large ransom.
Meanwhile, Washington stars as a subway dispatcher who does everything in his power to stop Travolta's character and save the hostages.
The first trailer for "Pelham 123" has been released, and you can check it out below. Sure, it looks very much like every other Scott flick, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
I certainly didn't like all of Scott's films, but among his recent ones, I enjoyed "Spy Game" and "Deja Vu." And, judging by the footage below, I believe there is a good chance of Travolta and Washington working together quite well.
"The Taking of Pelham 123" opens everywhere June 12, 2009. »

Wow, this is very exciting news. Imagine a Jason Bourne-type movie with Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise. Not bad, right? Now imagine it's written by the guys who adapted Wanted. And now, just for the hell of it, go ahead and throw David Cronenberg in the director's chair.
Imagine no more: That is The Matarese Circle, a Robert Ludlum adaptation being developed at MGM, with all of those pieces in place. Variety indicates that this is the marquee production under the studio's new direction, led by Mary Parent. Hard to argue with that. Just to cover its bases, MGM also owns the rights to The Matarese Countdown, so we could get a Denzel franchise out of this. »
