It's no "Prince of Egypt", but it's still pretty good.

While this was in production, I was under the impression that: a.) It was a sequel to "Prince of Egypt" and b.) It would be released theatrically. Well, both of those assumptions were wrong. Aside from the animation style, setting, and biblical underlinings, this movie really has nothing to do with "The Prince of Egypt". There are no returning characters or plot threads. The animation is good for direct-to-video but pales in comparison to "The Prince of Egypt". Ben Affleck is surprisingly good as Joseph, and, as always, Mark Hamill steals the show as Judah. The story remains pretty faithful to the original story, sans a few exceptions (just like "The Prince of Egypt"). The one main reservation I have with this movie isn't the story changes though (I could care less), but the running time. The movie clocks in at a measly 74 minutes (69, if you don't count the credits). Truthfully, I enjoyed the storytelling and voice acting so much, that I wanted at least 20 more minutes. Whether the story could sustain itself for that much longer, I don't know, but I hope to think it could have. Also, the songs were very weak compared to those in the very similar live-action "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat". But, then again, it's hard to live up to those. All in all, I enjoyed this movie a lot, and would recommend it to fans of "The Prince of Egypt" and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", and animation fans in general.
