The Three Musketeers Are Back!

2 September 2009 3:01 PM, PDT | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

He wouldn't exactly be the guy you'd expect to revive The Three Musketeers for the big screen, but in an age where every other film is in 3D and Sly Stallone is still doing action movies, we should always be prepared for the unexpected. The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Paul W.S. Anderson (Alien vs. Predator, Resident Evil) will produce (not direct) a new version of The Three Musketeers, which he co-wrote with Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones's Diary, The Tailor of Panama).   According to Anderson, they want to "modernize" The Three Musketeers, but "without compromising the fun of shooting a period piece." He later adds, "… in our film, corsets and feathered hats don't take center stage. Our version is rich in eye-popping action, romance and...

Paul W.S. Anderson Presents: The 3-D 'Musketeers'

2 September 2009 12:52 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I'm so happy we finally have some 3-D to talk about! Now it's time for Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) to flog the filly, with what sounds like an ambitious update of The Three Musketeers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

I was about to say that I kind of like Anderson as a genre director, but his writing leaves a lot to be desired, and then I read that he sought out his old friend Andrew Davies, who wrote the screenplays for Bridget Jones’s Diary and The Tailor of Panama specifically because "the project needed a script that was strong in character and romance to complement the action." Ok, then. Well done, Mr. Milla Jovovich.

I can't get a handle on what the Alien vs. Predator director means when he says the film will straddle the line between contemporary action pieces and the period setting, which is obviously going to be a huge hurdle. »

The Three Musketeers in 3D, but Hopefully No Smell-o-rama. They are French, you know.

2 September 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Paul W.S. Anderson is bringing Alexandre Dumas’ famous story of the Three Musketeers (actually four, but whose counting) to the big screen once again, this time in glorious 3D because in Hollywood like in the jungles, monkey see, monkey do. Anderson will produce the film, and has co-written the script with Andrew Davies (”The Tailor of Panama”) with an eye toward a 2011 release. The 1844 Dumas story follows d’Artagnan, a young man who joins the Musketeers and its three most legendary members, Athos, Porthos and Aramis. Together, they fight for France and tavern wenches, but mostly for the wenches. Anderson tells THR’s Heat Vision Blog: “We are definitely modernizing ‘The Three Musketeers’ without compromising the fun of shooting a period piece. But in our film, corsets and feathered hats don’t take center stage. Our version is rich in eye-popping action, romance and adventure.” Hollywood has tackled the tale »

Paul W.S. Anderson To Ruin The Three Musketeers… in 3D

2 September 2009 12:00 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Paul W.S. Anderson will direct a new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's Les Trois Mousquetaires, aka The Three Musketeers. Anderson co-wrote the screenplay (read: run, run far away...) with Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones’s Diary, The Tailor of Panama), and plans to shoot the film in, wait for it... 3-D. Ugh! If you're not yet disgusted, please read on. According to the article on HeatVision, Anderson intends for the film to have a contemporary feel. Here is the quote: “We are definitely modernizing ‘The Three Musketeers’ without compromising the fun of shooting a period piece,” said Anderson, who hopes to shoot in France and Germany. “But in our film, corsets and feathered hats don’t take center stage. Our version is rich in eye-popping action, romance and adventure.” So basically, Anderson wants to make a non-period period film, which will really just be a dumbed down B-action 3d spectacle? I »

Paul W.S. Anderson to Ride with Musketeers?

1 September 2009 9:45 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Paul W. S. Anderson will bring his very modern sensibilities to The Three Musketeers, a new version of the 1844 Alexandre Dumas novel.

Anderson, whose previous films include Resident Evil, Alien vs. Predator and Death Race, will be writing the screenplay with Andrew Davies, who is known for more character-driven fare. Apparently, the two have known each other since Anderson attended the University of Warwick in England, where Davies was serving as a tutor.

Empire reports the new film will have a contemporary feel, but plans are to retain the period setting. "We are definitely modernizing The Three Musketeers without compromising the fun of shooting a period piece," said Anderson. "But in our film, corsets and feathered hats don’t take center stage. Our version is rich in eye-popping action, romance and adventure."

Anderson’s movies are known for special effects and electronic music, not so much for romance, which is another reason Davies, »
