Ah, the lesser known Grinch holiday movie. In my family it's always been regarded a classic, kept on a dingy old VHS recorded from TV when I was just a small child. It is truly a bizarre film, much different than it's Christmas counterpart, and probably wouldn't appeal to lots of people. But for me, it is pure DECADENCE. I ADORE it. This is a quality film, undeniably, and anyone who says different, well, it's just not their thing I guess. But really, MAX SINGS!!! Can it get any better than that?? I think not. There's actually quite a bit of singing. As well as fun creepy creature things. I dunno, I'm weird, but I love this movie. It's excellent in a very bizarre way, I can't describe. I'd say it helps to be a bit abnormal yourself, as an indication of whether u may like it or not. Mmmmm yes.

What started as a bright, sunny day in Whoville quickly turned into an eerie, dreary feary night. A sour-sweet wind was blowing. Josiah Who and his dear wife Mariah Who knew only too well what would happened next: the Gree-Grumps started growling, which caused Puncker's Pond to runkle and grunkle, which got the Hakken-Krakks howling. And all this noise reached the number 1 enemy of Whoville: Mr. Mean One himself, The Grinch. The Grinch knew it was that time of year again: Grinch Night. A wonderful night for eyebrows, teeth, and especially, the exclusive Grinch Night ball! He has his dog Max fetch the Paraphenalia wagon. Back in Whoville, Josiah and Mariah's grandson, Ukariah, suggests they call the Grinch Alarm Warden. And soon enough they got the warden, Samuel S. McPherson, directly in person. He kept a tight watch on Mt. Crumpit as the Grinch set out atop a large wagon on two wheels. It contained horrors and weirdness of unimaginable proportions. Back in Whoville, Ukariah suddenly remembered he had to go to the Euphamisem, so he set out into the strong sour-sweet winds. They were so bad, Josiah declared he wouldn't go out on a night like this for $2.50. Not even $6.60!

Ukariah soon found himself all alone in the middle of nowhere, just as The Grinch proceeded down the mountain, flattening plants in his wake and terrorizing a Wuzzy-Woozoo, which luckily eluded the Grinch, causing him to fly right into a brickle bush. That's when Ukariah and the Grinch meet. "Are you the Grinch?" Asked Ukariah. This offended the Grinch very much. Ukariah wanted to see him without his glasses, but the Grinch simply told him to put his glasses back on and face the facts. That's when he and Max head off again. Max started wondering what in the world he was doing with such a cruel master; Ukariah follows the Grinch, who finally decides to give the lad a run for his money. He shows Ukariah the inside of his paraphernalia wagon. As soon as he stepped inside, he was greeted by some of the weirdest, strangest, blunderous, flunderous, clundunderous creatures ever! Big creatures, small creatures, large eyes, small eyes, no eyes, big legs, no legs---Finally, it was all over and luckily, by then, the sour-sweet winds were dying down. This stopped the Gree-Grumps from growling, Puncker's Pond from runkling and grunkling, and the Hakken-Krakkes from howling, which would then stop the Grinch from prowling. When Ukariah headed back to Whoville, Max decided to quit the Grinch and follow him. So, alone and defeated, Grinch lugged his wagon back up the mountain, knowing that the winds, as well as he, would be coming back someday. Ukariah and Max return to Whoville in triumph and they all celebrated that the Grinch has gone away.

It's Grinch Night! Fantastic Dr. Seuss animated special. It's not really a sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas, because at the end of that, he was reformed. Maybe it's more of a prequel; Hans Conried voices The Grinch and the narrator. Hal Smith voices Josiah, Henry Gibson is Max's singing voice. Unfortunately, Hans Conried passed away in 1982 and Hal Smith passed away in 1994. Two very talented men, who are very much missed. Dr. Seuss himself, Ted Geisel, worked on this special. Sadly, he passed on in 1991. What a talented man. If you're a Grinch fan, I also recommend: The Cat in the Hat Gets Grinched, where The Cat in the Hat and The Grinch meet, and get caught up in a madcap adventure. At opposite ends, of course; This special really has nothing to do with the holiday of Halloween, but it's still fun to watch around this time of year. I recommend you check it out! Check out The Grinch as he tries to terrorize Whoville where, apparently, $1.50 is a lot of money. I recommend Halloween Is Grinch Night from 1977. Fantabulous fun!

A Halloween favorite from Dr. Seuss, 2 October 2007

Halloween is my favorite holiday, and I love to have a good scare from watching a really good horror movie; or just watch a classic animated special like this one. I remember this special WAY back when I was a kid in elementary school (when it was on TV of course); but they don't show it on TV anymore now (along with The Halloween Tree, which is another favorite of mine, and a few other favorites), but I was lucky to order myself a copy from Amazon.ca.

It's also a great film about facing your fears, like Ukaraiah did to save Whoville, by jumping in The Grinch's wagon of spooks, to stall for time (now that scene REALLY scared the hell out of me as a kid); I would like point the interesting critters of Punker's Pond. The Gree Grumps like pink cats living in tree stumps (I am a cat lover), but I wonder what does the bottom half of an Hakken-Krakke look like? a seal's body? or the body of an Plesiosaurus? well I don't know, but it never hurts to use your imagination.

A very fun 70's TV special, 31 August 2009

Nasty old killjoy the Grinch (superbly voiced with deliciously oily aplomb by Hans Conried, who also does the charming narration) plans to pay the Whos in Whoville a decidedly unpleasant visit during a fierce wind storm. It's up to brave little Who Eukariah (an endearing sweet voice by Gary Shapiro) to stop the no-good Grinch. This typically offbeat and imaginative tale by Dr. Seuss not only offers the expected oddball creatures, catchy and witty songs, and trademark wacky rhymes, but also a spot-on central message about one can only effectively surmount fear by facing it head on. The Grinch makes for a delightfully sour and glowering buzz-crusher villain while Eukariah is a likable protagonist. The sequence in which a creepy array of spooky ghosts and grotesque ghouls try to scare Eukariah is wonderfully trippy and macabre. Henry Gibson as the voice of the Grinch's hapless browbeaten dog Max sings a hauntingly sad song. The animation is extremely vivid, colorful, and creative. Joe Raposo's infectiously jaunty score further enhances the enjoyably kooky merriment. A pleasingly quirky romp.

The one that got away, 9 February 2007

For a prequel, this one exceeded "The Grinch That Stole Christmas" in many ways. It's a more secular ethic being presented in an almost Oscar Wilde fashion. We are taught by a precocious child ( Eukariah ) that pragmatism and a strong identity are tools that can overcome adversity, despite all the ballyhoo and bluster the Grinch may present.

After all we all go to the euphemism all the time.

Eukariah presents us with an ideal of dignity in the face of calamity. The Grinch's bag of tricks confound and befuddle, but our diminutive hero takes a straight and sober view of these hi-jinx and wins the day.

The sub text to this film is Eukariah's poor judgement insisting he go to the euphemism in the first place. What if the Grinch managed to grinch him? All the Who's fears would be realized.

One of Seuss' Finest, 20 September 2002

I absolutely love this cartoon...only gripe...it's a little scary for really little kids. It's not really like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, even though it does involve Whos and Whoville, but I like how it's more like the other Dr. Seuss cartoons than the Grinch Christmas special. (But don't get me wrong... I love that one too!)

Great, but nothing to do with Halloween, 2 March 2002

This was originally called "Halloween is Grinch Night", but was probably changed after it occurred to the producers that it had nothing to do with Halloween.

Has great music, great plotline, and that Wuzzy Wuzu is cute! The animation's more Dr. Seuss-y than in other grinch 'toons, but it's not as good as How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

There are continuity issues when you compare this one to the Christmas one, but you'll have to watch both of them to figure out what I mean.

I also got the grinch grinches the cat in the hat. this movie is less better than that movie but I like this movie it is ok. I like how lots of the whos like Eukiriah and Mariah and Jasiah all have the same tune 2 their name. It is a funny movie but the grinch grinches the cat in the hat is WAY WAY BETTER!!!!! because i have been looking for that movie since last year and have not seen it since i was a little kid and now i have it!!!! I am soooooo happy!!!

possibly one of the best cartoons ever made. "Its Grinch Night" is a very non-average animated film ever made. Dr. Seuss put alot of thought into making an animated film of his own into a new plot with a new holiday. it would have been just a little bit better if the grinch could help this holiday instead of trying to ruin a holiday again. i gave this show 9/10
