Chris Weitz must be loving life right about now. All he needs to do is check the box office receipts for The Twilight Saga: New Moon and a big smile must spread across his face. No doubt his latest mega hit has given him the power he could only have dreamt of back in 1999 when along with his brother he gave the world American Pie.
An IMDb rating of just 4.5 hasn’t stopped New Moon being the huge success it was destined to be. Forget the critics, forget the awards, I only care what millions of teenage girls think.
Or so it seemed before his next project was announced. Weitz has decided to go for a much more low-key project. A much more serious project to be exact and one that is certainly a bit more awards friendly. Could he be looking for a bit of credibility?

Right on the heels of rumors of his retirement, New Moon director Chris Weitz has announced he will be teaming up with Summit Entertainment again to make The Gardener. The film is about a Los Angeles immigrant trying to protect his son, and it begins production early next year. More information on the brand new Chris Weitz project after the jump.
In a recent interview, Chris Weitz told MovieMaker Magazine that directing is “a rather silly occupation to undertake.” Well, this silly occupation just scored a $258M international opening weekend box office for Summit Entertainment with New Moon, so I’m sure it doesn’t look too silly to them. Weitz previously worked with New Line on The Golden Compass, which he recalls as a bad experience (I saw the film–it was a bad experience for the audience too).
But instead of pushing forward with the Twilight series and »

It.s insane how the tables can turn for a director in Hollywood in the blink of a wolf.s eye. After a monstrous opening weekend for Chris Weitz.s The Twilight Saga New Moon, the former American Pie all-star has gone from being the dude whose Golden Compass franchise flopped like a fatty in a pool to the dude who doubled the return of an already insanely popular series. Of course, Summit Entertainment is smart enough to keep their new talent happy and according to Variety, have already signed Weitz up for a new picture. It.s called The Gardener, and it couldn.t be more different than New Moon. Apparently, it will follow a Los Angeles Mexican immigrant who does his best to protect his son. Eric Eason wrote the screenplay. As a Mexican Angeleno, I.ll be fine with this as long as Weitz doesn.t make »

American Pie star Jennifer Coolidge has her adopted New Orleans, Louisiana to thank for her role as Nicolas Cage's stepmother in gritty new film Bad Lieutenant - because she fears she wouldn't have landed the part if she didn't live there.
The acclaimed comedienne accepts she's not every filmmaker's first choice when it comes to landing dramatic roles and was thrilled when director Werner Herzog took a risk on her - because she hopes the part will lead to other serious parts.
She says, "My odds were just not good in getting the role... I mean, I've been in American Pie, Legally Blonde and the Christopher Guest films, so it's impossible for someone like me to get in on anything dramatic, ever. I can't get in the door.
"I do think that living in New Orleans, where the film was shot, and having a house down there somehow helped - because a lot of people auditioned in L.A."
Coolidge admits she is getting tired of playing wacky housewives and oddball characters in comedies: "I am grateful but bored because I do get offered the same roles over and over again. If I go to a wardrobe fitting the costume designer will always roll in with maybe 12 leopard dresses on the rack no matter what role I do. I'm not just the lady in the leopard dress.
"I do hope this role helps me to do other things. It was so nice to do something where I didn't have whoopie cushions in my shoes."
And now she's looking for a 'killer' role: "I would love to play a serial killer; something like that would be nice. In my next film, The Exterminator, we have a pesticide company that ends up killing boyfriends that did their woman wrong." »

For the record, I always link back to the source and cite everyone's tweets that I use from the Twitter-Wood follow list, including Edgar Wright. That's more than can be said for an edited version of an Edward Woodward memorial he wrote on his blog that showed up in edited form on the Times website, though, according to his posts today.
I do make a minimal number of edits, such as the f-bomb in Ice-t's Twitter Pic of the Day winner today, which was followed by yet another Brett Ratner/Michael Jackson pic. You need see that one for the giant wig along. Check it all out after the jump along with a "New Moon" cast shot from Gil Birmingham, Alyson Hannigan's musical Joss Whedon nostalgia and Jamie Campbell Bower's befuddlement over Justin Bieber. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 19, 2009.

Animal lover Jennifer Coolidge has a personal tragedy to thank for turning her into the perfect wreck in Nicolas Cage's new drama Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans - her dog died a day before filming started.
The American Pie star was fighting to get into character as Cage's unkempt stepmother when the death of her pooch made it all come together.
She tells WENN, "Some things personally were happening to me at the same time, so I sort of felt that the timing couldn't have been better with what my character was doing.
"I lost a dog the day before filming, in a terrible way. There's a book of photos that (director) Werner (Herzog) and his wife took and there's a picture where I look like Linda Blair from The Exorcist. I would like to say it was prosthetics but it was just some tragedy that helped it all.
"I think there were days I didn't bathe or wash my hair for a long time, so I did feel disgusting. I did become that person. If you could time it right in your life where you play someone tragic when something really awful is going on, it really works." »

I can't lie, I'm sick of all the vampires. What once seemed cool to me has been watered down with all of these novels, television shows and movies that appear to be geared more towards teens than adults. At least HBO's 'True Blood' is adult in nature and the CW's 'The Vampire Diaries' is a lot darker and mature than expected. (Seriously.) As for the 'Twilight' saga, well that's a different animal entirely. Stephanie Meyer's four novels have been called a 'Harry Potter' series for girls, yet although J.K. Rowling's epic is about wizards, her stories feel more “realistic”. As Rowling's series progressed, the characters evolved and the stakes grew higher and higher. Not to mention, her stories have a pretty high body count for a series aimed at kids. 'Twilight' is also a series of young adult novels, but it's aimed at women and in »

The last 24 hours have been exciting for comics-related movie watchers on Twitter. Not only did some behind-the-scenes posts pop up from "Thor" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," two of the biggest upcoming releases in the genre, but Rob Liefeld dropped an eye-opening bomb about his defunct "Badrock" film — which he says almost happened in 1996 with "Twilight Saga: New Moon" director Chris Weitz.
Aside from those tweets, there's also a pretty spectacular Terry Moore Spider-Man sketch waiting after the jump. Check that out, along with Tony Moore's answer to fanboy hate, Simon Pegg's thoughts on Scotty in "Star Trek" and a prediction for the English language from Jeffrey Rowland.

The greatest movie I have ever seen. ****Disclaimer**** This review is for entertainment purposes only. Do not be alarmed by my hands on your chest, Bella. I must feel your heartbeat in order to make sure you're still breathing. I also must check you for breast cancer. I know you're only 17. Just go with it.I have to admit, I hated Twilight. I thought it was one of the biggest pieces of trash I had ever seen. Director Catherine Hardwick couldn't handle a Viewmaster much less be able to handle the technical know how needed to make a full length motion picture. But that didn't stop the hordes of Twilight fans who read every book over and over, anxious to see their tale of teen vampire angst on screen. Twilight made over $380 million dollars worldwide, keeping the employees of Summit Entertainment from a future career at Starbucks. I must also »

Director Chris Weitz has made it as far as he can go. After lackluster showings with his first few films, co-writing Antz and directing American Pie, Down to Earth, About a Boy and The Golden Compass, the latter of which he says was taken away from him by the studio and cut into a movie that he wasn't very proud of, Weitz is hanging up the headphones soon after the release of his next movie, The Twilight Saga: New Moon. But Weitz, in what can be said is the only smart move of this whole deal, isn't making New Moon his last film. According to his interview with MovieMaker Magazine, he's got one more project that he'd like to complete before he surfs off into directorial retirement. "It’s a script by Eric Essen called The Gardener," he explained. "It’s sort of an homage to The Bicycle Thief. The intention is that we will shoot half »

Chris Weitz has had quite the eclectic Hollywood career. The 40-year old first came to the public's attention when he collaborated with his brother to create the "American Pie" franchise, but he's also written screenplays for movies such as "Antz" and "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps"; directed Chris Rock's comedy "Down to Earth" and the fantasy epic ""The Golden Compass" (which was a massive international hit); and also produced flicks such as "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" and the upcoming Tom Ford drama "A Single Man." So, it's really not that surprising that the amiable Weitz would step in to helm... »

Let's be honest, without Twilight we probably wouldn't even be talking about Summit Entertainment any longer. They have, of course, been around much longer than most of us realize with films such as Memento, American Pie, Mr. and#038; Mrs. Smith, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as part of their production company cred. However, as distributors they have Twilight and the modest hit in Knowing (which they handled domestically and not internationally). Beyond that what are we really talking about?
They managed to squander what I understand to be a rather entertaining teen comedy in Sex Drive, Push bombed, Astro Boy is still in theaters but you wouldn't know it, Sorority Row (a teen horror with the promise of nudity) earned $11 million and the sin of all sins, Summit's 17%-Rotten Tomatoes rated Fly Me To The Moon made more money at the box-office »

Chris Weitz had a tough act to follow. The talented writer-producer-director had directed such films as American Pie (1999), About a Boy (2002), and The Golden Compass (2007), and now he's the man behind the camera on one of the year's most breathlessly anticipated movies, The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009). Just that title alone clues you into the myriad tasks and quandaries at hand for Weitz: he was stepping into an existing franchise that got off to a blockbuster start last year with Twilight (2008); he was taking over from another director (Catherine Hardwicke) with an entirely different style; he was inheriting a cast -- including Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner -- already intimately familiar with their respective roles, and he was directing a movie that was no longer just a sequel to a popular movie, but rather the next installment in a billion-dollar phenomenon. American Pie star Tara Reid has brushed off rumours she is engaged to her internet entrepreneur boyfriend after she was spotted sporting a large pink diamond on her ring finger.
The actress met German businessman Michael Axtmann earlier this year after she was released from a spell in rehab to treat her alcohol addiction.
The pair has been dating ever since, and sent gossip mongers into overdrive when Reid was pictured wearing a massive pink sparkler on her left hand earlier this week (begs09Nov09).
But Reid insists they have no plans to wed in the near future, confessing the big jewel was just a generous birthday gift from her lover.
She tells People.com, "I got a beautiful ring from my boyfriend for my birthday last weekend. But we're not engaged... yet!"
Reid was previously engaged to U.S. TV host Carson Daly. »

In casting news tonight, we've learned that Harvey Keitel is joining those crazy Fockers. He's signed on for Little Fockers, the sequel to Meet the Fockers, and the Focker-pun free title Meet the Parents. He's joining returning cast members Ben Stiller, Robert DeNiro, Teri Polo, and Owen Wilson. Keitel will be playing the role of a contractor employed by Stiller's character. The film will be directed by Paul Weitz (American Pie, About A Boy), who's surely looking to move on after Cirque du Freak bombed. I liked the first film well enough, but I'm really wondering how much longer this franchise is going to live on. Will we see the baby Fockers in question growing up while having to deal with their unfortunate last name? Perhaps a Future Fockers down the line? The possibilities are focking endless! Also, in news that will surely make Zachary Quinto fangirls happy, the Heroes »

Playboy magazine bosses have confirmed reports actress Tara Reid has stripped off for them.
The American Pie star will appear naked in the upcoming issue of the men's magazine.

Ironically, rap mogul Sean 'Diddy' Combs also appears in the next Playboy - as the subject of the magazine's monthly Playboy Interview. Reid was once left embarrassed on the red carpet at a Diddy party when she accidentally exposed a breast to photographers. »
