Review: Return To Sleepaway Camp

11 August 2008 1:08 PM, PDT | From iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news

An Icons of Fright Exclusive! The first review of the long-awaited "Return to Sleepaway Camp"!

Return to Sleepaway Camp

It's been 5 years since principal photography completed on “Return To Sleepaway Camp” and this reviewer has to wonder why it's taken so long to get the movie out. Especially when you consider that this is a sequel that finally lives up to the rude and nasty spirit of the original “Sleepaway Camp”. Forget the mid-80's sequels, “Return To Sleepaway Camp” is The movie us fans have been waiting for.

The sequels that hit video store shelves in '88 and '89, featuring Pamela Springsteen as Angela, were adequately goofy/gory spoofs of the cheapo slasher subgenre. They featured enough splatter and contrived continuity from the original to tide over fans for almost two decades. Still, “Sleepaway Camp” writer-director Robert Hiltzik had nothing to do with them. While they hold up as

Baptism Of Fire

3 August 2008 1:07 AM, PDT | From NYPost.com | See recent New York Post news

Vincent Pastore was so fat as a baby that he had to be baptized at Sea World. Actor Paul Borghese can't remember which comic came up with that line since there were so many shots taken at Big Pussy of "The Sopranos" during his roast at the Friars Club. Potty-mouthed roastmaster Judy Gold introduced Pat Cooper, Deanna Martin, "Goumba Johnny" Saliano and John "Cha-Cha" Ciarcia, who made the night by literally falling off the stage.

Sopranos Actor Sells Highest-earning Show Memorabilia

20 July 2008 6:15 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

An actor on hit U.S. TV series The Sopranos has sold the most expensive piece of memorabilia related to the show - an original painting of the series' stars Tony and Carmela Soprano - for $175,000 (GBP87,500).

The Duke and Duchess of North Caldwell, painted by Federico Castelluccio who played Italian hit man Furio Giunta on The Sopranos, was sold to a Toronto, Canada oil executive earlier this month.

The painting portrays the crime boss couple - played by James Gandolfini and Edie Falco - staring intensely as they replicate a 15th century pose of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino.

Castelluccio says of his piece: "I had just finished the show's fourth season, where Furio and Carmela had this placid love affair that was never consummated. James Gandolfini has the same strong presence as the Duke, and I knew there was going to be a dividing line (between Tony and Carmela), and that my character was the cause of their split at the end of the season."

Art collector Keya Morgan, who brokered the deal, confirms: "It's an unbelievable painting, and not only is it a record for The Sopranos but it is a very high price for a living artist at his age. (Vincent) Van Gogh never accomplished anything like this. He died broke."

Imperioli Had Trouble Finding New Role

18 July 2008 9:00 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Sopranos star Michael Imperioli was desperate to find a killer acting role after his long-running stint on the show - because its success was so untouchable.

The actor - who played Christopher Moltisanti in the long-running mob drama - is returning to TV to fight crime, in an American adaptation of hit British cop show Life on Mars.

But he insists his mega success with his infamous role left him on a chase to find an equally challenging part.

He says, "I definitely was picky. Something like The Sopranos, that fulfills your creative drive for such a long period of time and challenges you, is a hard act to follow.

"I thought the (Life on Mars) script was very well written, first of all, and a really cool idea. And I thought he's different enough from what I had done in the past, although it seems to be most of the stuff I've been doing is either a cop or a robber."

Imperioli will portray Detective Ray Carling in the series.

Life on Mars is expected to air on 9 October.

Drea De Matteo burst into tears when she discovered she was pregnant, because she didn't feel ready to be a mother.

The 36-year-old Sopranos star is now a proud mum to seven-month-old Alabama Gypsy Rose, with rocker boyfriend Shooter Jennings, 29.

But she confesses she was terrified when the pregnancy test first turned blue: "We took, like, 50 pregnancy tests. He was really excited, but I was crying, 'I'm not ready.'"

'Sex and the City 2' is in the Works

11 July 2008 4:38 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Lynette Rice over at Entertainment Weekly lets the world know that HBO has confirmed that a sequel to the Sex and the City movie is in the early stages of development. Of course this is obvious news and considering the nature of the article it basically boils down to saying they are considering possible storylines, especially when they say further down in the article "no deal is in place and there is no script." Rice also says "the lead actresses involved are taking a cautious attitude towards another film, not wanting to rush a sequel and risk disappointing their loyal fans." This should read as saying the lead actresses are wondering how much money they should ask for should a script be written, but "Entertainment Weekly" is too P.C. to say something like that. On top of Satc talk there are also grumblings of a "Sopranos" movie, something HBO

We're Wild for "Mad Men." But Are You?

10 July 2008 2:45 PM, PDT | From McTelevision.blogspot.com | See recent McTelevision news

Los Angeles --There are worse fates than spending a decade with "Mad Men," even if it only adds up to five years in real time. AMC's series stands as an example of TV at its most creative and challenging, and it enters its second season by setting us down in 1962. That's two years after we first met the men and women of the Sterling Cooper advertising agency, and their storylines only stand to get richer and more complex.

Season two premieres on July 27; expect an avalanche of reviews closer to that date. But on Wednesday morning, the cast and "Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner were content to bask in critical love, a rare perfume in these parts due to dissipate sharply over the next two weeks.

And if we're being completely honest, that sweet scent of popularity could die out completely if the series takes a wrong turn in its sophomore season.

Chase Closes Door On Sopranos

10 July 2008 9:06 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

A Sopranos movie will never happen - because creator David Chase can't decide how to take the mob drama to the big screen.

Rumours of a film have circulated since the last episode of the Emmy-winning series aired last year, and a number of castmembers have voiced their support for a cinema adaptation.

But film maker Peter Bogdanovich, who has appeared in and directed several episodes of the show, claims Chase told him privately it will never happen.

Bogdanovich says, "I spoke to David Chase about it a month ago, and he said no.

"He said he thought about it, and he can't figure a way to do it.

"So I don't think it will ever happen. I don't think you can ever say never, but my hunch is it won't happen."

The notion of a "Sopranos" movie officially sleeps with the fishes.

"I spoke to ['Sopranos' creator] David Chase about it a month ago, and he said no," director/actor Peter Bogdanovich told TV critics this week.

"He said he thought about it, and he can't figure out a way to do it," Bogdanovich said.

"So I don't think it will ever happen. I don't think you can ever say never, but my hunch is it won't happen."

Bogdanovich appeared on "The Sopranos" every now and then as Dr. Elliot Kupferberg, the shrink to Tony's shrink,

DVD Links: Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | Rss Feed Well, as you can see I am attempting a new layout this week and I have a feeling it will be changing over the next month or so as I am working on ways to make this column a little easier on me by having the database do most of the work. I can say this week was easier, but I think I still have a little something up my sleeve to speed up the process a little more and perhaps add a few more bells and whistles to the presentation below. Enough of that though, let's see what's out there this week. Van Helsing (2-Disc Collector's Edition) I actually have this here in the lab, and I couldn't bring myself to watch it again. I tried giving it another go around way back when I received the HD DVD version and I just couldn't.

The Sopranos star Michael Imperioli is returning to TV to fight crime, in a new American adaptation of a hit British cop show.

Imperioli will portray lead actor Jason O'Mara's partner in the series, a role played by Philip Glenister in the British version of the show.

Michael Imperioli Adds Attitude To 'Life On Mars'

3 July 2008 12:15 AM, PDT | From syfyportal.com | See recent syfyportal news

There is no more David E. Kelley, but there is an ex-mafia guy on ABC's new series "Life on Mars." Michael Imperioli, who played Christopher Moltisanti in the hit HBO series "The Sopranos," has joined the cast of "Life on Mars" as Detective Ray Carling, a man who feels that the present-day cop-trapped-in-the-1970s Sam Tyler (Jason O'Mara) took a job that was supposed to be his. The show, which is based on a BBC series that starred "Doctor Who's" John Simm, also stars Rachelle Lefevre and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's" Colm Meaney. The original pilot, which if shown will probably contain some reshoots and re-editing, was directed by Kelley -- best known for "Ally McBeal" and "Boston Legal" -- but it will not be run by Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec and Scott Rosenberg, who worked ...

Twenty-five outfits worn by his iconic character Tony Soprano went under the hammer at a Christie's auction - with all proceeds going to Wounded Warrior Project, a charity that aids injured soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Other items auctioned included Janis Joplin's mugshot, poems handwritten by late rocker Jim Morrison, and a cane owned by Elvis Presley, which has a brass eagle top that can be removed to reveal a hidden dagger.

Lapaglia Considered For Soprano Movie

23 June 2008 6:20 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Without A Trace star Anthony Lapaglia almost got a second chance to play Tony Soprano when The Sopranos writers considered a film-within-a-tv show for the series' final season.

Australian Lapaglia was one of the first actors considered as the Soprano family leader before the role went to James Gandolfini.

But, in a new interview with show creator David Chase for an upcoming final season DVD, the writer reveals Lapaglia was considered again as the star of a spin-off movie about Tony Soprano.

In the DVD special interview, Chase tells interviewer and Sopranos fan Alec Baldwin that he and producers dabbled with the idea of Soprano's psychologist, played by Lorraine Bracco, writing a book about her encounters with the mob boss.

Lapaglia would have played Soprano in the movie adaptation.
