The movie recieved dreadful word of mouth from the public, and bar the odd review was universally slated by critics. The critical drubbing continued on until early the next year (1999), when it was nominated for five Golden Rapsberry (Razzie) Awards. Including; Worst Picture, Worst Director: Roland Emmerich, Worst Supporting Actress: Maria Pitillo (Won), Worst Screenplay and Worst Remake or Sequel (Tied for the win with The Avengers (1998) and Psycho (1998)) Opinions of the movie haven't changed much since it's release in May of 1998, and in the eyes of most it remains a bloated mess.

It's highly doubtful that Godzilla, even if it did exist, would survive, let alone in New York. Lizards are coldblooded and require heat and warmth from their surroundings to remain comfortable. For this reason, they usually hug the ground like snakes and crocodiles do, moving quite infrequently. Godzilla in reality would have sought to remain near the equator, somewhere in land like a desert and not someplace damp and hostile like New York. However, a creature of such size technically could exist. With the earth, nature, and the universe in general being in constant flux, a Godzilla like creature could technically be real.

Millions of years ago, dinosaurs, some being over 110 feet tall walked on land. Marine reptiles could stretch to the same size; some even exceeded 120 feet. Nowadays, no such known land animal, however, could get to over 100 feet. However, we still don't know even three quarters of the animals on land, and there's rumours a 40 foot tall monster exists in Congo, however, no solid evidence has sprung up on that subject.

The sea would be the best bet to find a Godzilla-like creature. We have the 110 foot long Blue Whale, the Giant Squid, which, in some estimates, exceeds 80 feet. We only know about 10 percent of the creatures in the sea, and we know more about the moon than what's in our own oceans. So, maybe, one day, a Godzilla will come under human eye.

No. This confused audiences quite a bit, but was explained in the novelization. In the film Godzilla does breathe a blast of wind, which lifted and tossed cars. The cars fuel would ignite, and the explosion would be blown by his breath...resulting in what looked something like a fiery breath weapon. This was one of the more common complaints against the film, with fans stating that Godzilla without his atomic breath weapon just isn't Godzilla.

In the movie, the creature is called Godzilla. However, Toho Studios was so appalled at what Emmerich and Devlin had done to Godzilla that they renamed the creature "Zilla" to differentiate it from their official creature. Also, because they felt that the "God" had been taken out of Godzilla.

After the movie was released, many fans had also given the creature several different nicknames. Such as "Deanzilla", "Tri-Starzilla", "Fraudzilla" and "GINO" (Godzilla In Name Only).

Also, in 'Gojira, Mosura, Kingu Gidorâ: Daikaijû sôkôgeki' ('Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack', otherwise known as 'GMK'), one character refers to the creature in this movie. He says that American scientists mistook this creature for the real Godzilla, which in the 'GMK' storyline, attacked Tokyo in 1954, and then at the time of the setting of 'GMK'.
