Not too bad, not too bad at all..., 26 January 2002
6/10

After NAPOLEON, my confidence in Australia's ability to create a decent kids' animal film was shot to pieces...but thankfully, PAWS and, slightly more recently, THE REAL MACAW, have meant that I'm well and truly back on the bandwagon. PAWS is not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination...guitarist Nathan Cavaleri in a lead role isn't going to inspire too many people, but Billy Connolly as the voice of the talking dog is enough to watch (and love) the film alone. Funnily, the talking dog - while obviously the centrepiece of the entire production - was the only part that didn't sit quite right with me. Anyway, a classic formulaic plot on a relatively low budget (compared with similar American efforts, for instance), Cavaleri and Connolly obviously working well together...for passable family entertainment, this gets the thumbs up. 6/10.
