The following contains Major Spoilers for the "First Contact" episode of the SciFi Channel's "Stargate: Atlantis." It's always big news when a member of "Stargate Sg-1" visits "Atlantis," and this week the "Save Daniel Jackson" fans were in heaven when Michael Shanks guest-starred. This episode was obviously intended to be the "mid-season finale" or whatever they call it when SciFi Channel chops a season in half, something that frustrates me no end. However, with the network's decision to run the program's final year almost in one piece, we only have to wait two weeks. Next Friday will be the two-hour premiere of "Sanctuary." What happened this week was that Daniel Jackson arrives at the city to follow up on a lead on a secret laboratory an Ancient scientist named Janus (from ...

The two direct-to-dvd movies MGM made over the past couple years based on the "Stargate Sg-1" universe are coming to the SciFi Channel beginning this spring. "Stargate: Ark of Truth" as well as "Stargate Continuum" will air on SciFi Channel as Sunday night movie events, and could complement the release of the new series "Stargate: Universe," which may come out in July. At the same time, "Stargate: Atlantis" will continue to live on SciFi Channel as a television movie, which also will air on SciFi Channel, and could be shown during the "Universe" mid-season break, according to Multichannel News. That means there will be plenty of Stargate on SciFi Channel throughout 2009, and even more coming soon to a DVD store near you. Brad Wright, co-creator of "Sg-1," said that there will ...

Well Bite me.
Just when I get comfortable with Stargate Atlantis after losing Stargate Sg-1, they go and pull the plug on it. Yep, it’s been announced today that this, the fifth season of Stargate Atlantis, is its final season on television.
With the culmination of this fifth season, Stargate Atlantis will air it’s 100th episode titled “Enemy at the Gate.” The 100th episode will air in January of 2009.
They’ve added to the cancellation message that the Sci-Fi Channel has green-lit a two-hour movie based on the series. It has yet to to be titled, but the film will be written by executive producers Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie.
The movie will follow up on the final season of the series.
The successes of the previous two Stargate movies, The Ark of Truth and Continuum have been successful enough to generate additional plans to continue to expand

One of Sci-Fi channels most successful TV offerings, Stargate Atlantis, may be ending early 2009, but that doesn’t stop the network from milking the show’s success. In fact, it was recently announced that the show, which will end its run in January, will become the basis of a new two-hour film that would air a little after the end of the season. The producers are planning to emulate the success of its parents series, Stargate Sg-1, which spawned two direct-to-dvd films, The Ark of Truth and Continuum.
“We're excited to tell 'Atlantis' stories on a bigger canvas. The successes of the two original 'Stargate' movies, 'The Ark of Truth' and 'Continuum,' have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers,” series co-creators Robert C. Cooper and Brad Wright explained in a statement. “We have plans for both 'Sg-1' and 'Atlantis' to remain vital as we expand the franchise.

When its fifth season concludes in January 2009, "Stargate: Atlantis" will shift from a weekly ongoing series on the SciFi Channel to at least one two-hour movie on that network, then could join "Stargate Sg-1" in the direct-to-dvd market, according to Multichannel News. Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie have been selected to write the movie's script. Just which cast members will jump from the television series to the film and on is not yet certain. However, look for the film to be released on DVD in early 2009. "We're excited to tell 'Atlantis' stories on a bigger canvas," said Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, who co-created both "Stargate Sg-1" and "Atlantis," in a statement. "The successes of the two original 'Stargate' direct-to-video movies 'The Ark Of Truth' and 'Continuum' have ...

Sometimes it's hard to shake a popular character and avoid the typecast label, and some actors who have portrayed iconic roles have gone to great lengths to do just that. Michael Shanks may be forever known as Daniel Jackson to "Stargate Sg-1" fans everywhere, but an actor has to eat and take on new challenges. Shanks, who did a three-part story in Fox's "24" last year, is now making a move over to "Burn Notice" on the USA network where he takes on a recurring role of a blacklisted spy named Victor. The episode, which airs Aug. 14 at 10 p.m., features Shanks as a reckless man who doesn't seem to care too much how many innocent people he victimizes. Shanks will have a chance to work with another popular science-fiction icon, Tricia Helfer of "Battlestar Galactica." who plays Carla, ...

So the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con is officially over - today feels like coming down from a “high.” Covering the Con is always a whirlwind, but at least this year (my second covering it) I felt like a was a bit more in control.
We did our best to bring you the lowdown on what is relevant to you although we couldn’t cover everything. That’s the problem with the Con - as far as movies and television almost everything is relevant to what we cover here at Screen Rant: Sci-Fi, superheroes, action and a bit of horror.
We managed to cover:
The Stargate Continuum DVD movie red carpet premiere. Jj Abrams’ Fringe panel. Battlestar Galactica. Joss Whedon’s highly anticipated Dollhouse TV series. The Stargate Atlantis panel. Zack Snyder’s follow up to 300: Watchmen. The pretty much waste of time that was ABC’s Lost panel. The completely opposite of that,

This panel was a follow up to the premiere of Stargate Continuum the night before.
As the Stargate Sg-1 cast came in and were introduced, everyone applauded wildly - but by far the big fan favorite (judging by how deaf I went from the cheers) was Christopher Judge, hands down, for this Stargate Continuum forum.
Amanda Tapping talked briefly about her new web-to-tv show, Sanctuary, which has filmed eight of its scheduled thirteen episodes so far.
As for Ben Browder, he’s enjoying some quiet time between acting gigs and volunteering his time coaching pole vaulting at a local high school.
Christopher Judge is working on a project called Rage of Angels with Michael Shanks and a substantial announcement about the project is coming out in the next few weeks. He also had been hired to play the bad guy in Fox’s 24, but things didn’t seem to work out in that regard.

Being a huge Stargate Sg-1 fan, it was quite an honor to have the opportunity to attend the premiere of the upcoming direct to DVD movie Stargate: Continuum. I’m still enough of a fanboy to geek out at the opportunity to meet the actors from one of my all time favorite TV series… Plus I’m happy to report that the movie was excellent! Far better than the previous Sg-1 DVD film Stargate: The Ark of Truth.
This was our first “red carpet” event and although the press was pretty crammed together, we had the opportunity to chat with some folks from PopCultureShock.com and they were very cool. You can thanks Screen Rant contributor Bruce Simmons for all the great pictures from the event, Btw.
The red carpet event was held on the deck of a retired aircraft carrier, the Midway - and the film was shown on

It looks like NBC wants to try its hand at producing a series that can only be viewed online. I’m not sure what to call it… my mind jumps to “TV series” but that’s not right, and “Web series” just doesn’t sound right to me.
The series is called Gemini Division and stars Rosario Dawson as a NYC detective who, after the death of her lover, discovers that he was not human. You can watch the trailer below.
Apparently there’s a biotech angle to the plot and according to NBC the series is a “female first-person confessional.” And what is that? Think YouTube phenom “LonelyGirl15″ who rocketed to internet fame with her YouTube soliloquies. Despite the fact that she’s been “outed” as not being just a teenager yakking about her life from her bedroom, it seems that on her video page they’re still trying

Playing the same character for more 10 years will certainly take a toll, which is just one of the reasons why former "Stargate Sg-1" star Amanda Tapping is relishing the opportunity to play someone new in the upcoming series, "Sanctuary." The series, which is based on the popular green-screen Web series developed by the SciFi Channel, is set to make its full-series debut in the fall and revolves around a bizarre world where all the creatures that go bump in the night are real and in need of a sanctuary. Tapping plays one such being herself; a 157-year old that hunts the abnormals that threaten the world's human society. "It's very scary," Tapping told SciFi Wire. "No, it's actually been really great. It's been a good thing for me. And as much as she's very dissimilar from Sam Carter, ...

This review contains Major Spoilers for "Continuum," the upcoming direct-to-dvd movie for "Stargate Sg-1." Don.t mistake .Continuum. for a new adventure; instead, it.s a collection of the best bits from the last ten seasons all tied together to form one cohesive story. Think of the popular tales .There But For The Grace Of God. and .Mobius,. where time is changed and the world comes close to an end only this time it is on a slightly larger scale. During the execution of the last Ba.al (Cliff Simon) clone, Teal.c (Christopher Judge) and Vala (Claudia Black) mysteriously vanish and Gen. O.Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) is killed, forcing the rest of the team back through the gate. When they materialize home however, it is to a very different world. Not only was the Stargate program never created, ...

He was best known for a series of military roles in cult shows, drawing on his three-year army stint in the 1960s. Davis only began acting in the early 1980s and (more)

Dammit - Now we’ve lost Don S. Davis. What a year this has been for losing people in the movie and TV industry…
Don was best known for playing General Hammond on Stargate: Sg-1 for 10 years. This will make his appearance in the upcoming DVD movie Stargate: Continuum (which will be released on July 29th) that much more poignant.
On the series he played the role of commander of Stargate Command with a quiet, fatherly strength that made him a fan favorite on the series.
He passed away Sunday morning of a heart attack at the age of 65. In addition to acting, Davis was also an accomplished artist in the areas of sculpture, painting, drawing, and set design - you can view some of his very impressive work at DonSDavisArt.com.
He was born in Aurora, Mo., in 1942, and served in the U.S. Army. Davis married Ruby Fleming-Davis

Don S. Davis, best known to genre fans as Maj. Gen. George Hammond in the Stargate television and film franchise, died on June 29. He was 65. Davis was a co-star during the first seven years of "Stargate Sg-1." As a result of a medical condition, he cut back to making guest appearances on "Sg-1" until the show wrapped at the end of its 10th season. He also brought Gen. Hammond to several episodes of "Stargate: Atlantis." His final franchise appearance will be in the upcoming direct-to-dvd film, "Stargate: Continuum," scheduled for release on July 29. He appeared in numerous films, including "Far Cry," "Woodshop" and "Vipers," all of which are in post-production. He guest-starred on several television shows, such as "Supernatural," "The Dead Zone" and "Flash Gordon." Davis ...

The last time I took a survey, I got screwed over.
A few years back I participated in a survey for my cable company and it asked what specialty channels I liked. Ie: Being a fervent Nascar fan, I admitted to The Speed Channel and a few others. A year later my favorite channels were on their own special programming tier that I had to pay extra for.
After talking to a lot of people back then about that survey and what they told me, it seems all the survey did was tell the cable company what channels to charge extra for. Thanks Mr. Cable company. I’ll remember that one.
With that said: What do Blade Runner, Firefly and 1984 all have in common?
They topped their respective categories in a survey titled “Visions for Tomorrow” that The Sci-Fi Channel conducted asking site visitors to report in on their favorite movies,
