Ten years after his sister died in a motorcycle crash, Tom McGregor (Mercurio) returns to the remote outback highway stop they once ran together. Intending to be alone with his thoughts, he is interrupted by a motley group of three would-be diamond thieves, and a wise Aboriginal grandfather who is teaching two children the ways of his people. Intriguing film, if not very successful, is not without its positives: shot in and around Alice Springs, some of the scenery shots are stunning, and the characters, striking against such a desolate backdrop, bring this one to life. Ultimately, the script isn't strong enough to support the film: a similar premise was utilised far more effectively three years later in M Night Shayalaman's The Sixth Sense. Mercurio, reduced to a sulking shell three years after his phenomenal success in Strictly Ballroom, commands top billing but this wasn't what he was meant for; Friels is as charismatic as ever, and the token pretty girl in skimpy clothing is played by Smart. 5/10.
