Julie Chen blogs 'Big Brother 11': On the finale and signing off

17 September 2009 8:28 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Wait! It’s over? It’s done? Yes, my Big Brother friends, the season has come to an end. Phooey. Granted, I’ve got some stuff going on (Baby ChenTot is on his way…well, soon!), but it’s always a bit sad when I say the final goodnight at the end of each season. Sigh…what a season it was! But First… (Chenbot lives on!) Final H.O.H. Part One: First round of Hoh: “Log Jam” Winner: Kevin Set-up: The Houseguests stood on a log while keeping contact with their key. As the seasons began to turn, so did the log. We threw wind, rain, leaves and snow at them. Jordan fell first. Cut to…Natalie thinks Kevin is good on his word to take her to the final two and jumps off the log roll 10 minutes or so after Jordan fell (she was having a shower when it happened). Wow! »

Quentin Tarantino: Imagining Hollywood without him

21 August 2009 6:57 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Take your seats, class: Senior writer Chris Nashawaty concludes his in-depth weeklong study of all things Quentin Tarantino with his final installment of EW University. Check out our gallery of 20 Tarantino movie and movie poster faves, our look at the original 1978 Inglorious Bastards, our guide to the film-geek references in Tarantino's Basterds, and our Quentin Tarantino final exam. Imagining Hollywood -- and the world beyond it -- without Quentin Tarantino No one divides moviegoers like Quentin Tarantino. Those who are in his corner love his infectious cineaste enthusiasm, his references to obscure B-movies, and his pop culture-drenched, rat-a-tat-tat dialogue. The haters find his movies too long, too talky, and too ... well, just too much of everything. But just for a second, try to imagine Hollywood without him. It's harder than you think. Ever since the video store clerk-turned-world famous auteur unveiled 1992's Reservoir Dogs, his influence has rippled out and »

Mary Surratt was eventually convicted and hanged for conspiring to kill the president; her son went on the lam and eventually was put on trial but was never convicted, living until 1916. Which was the best year for movies: 1977, 1994, or 1999?

5 August 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Last week, we posted a story about how 1984 was the best movie year ever when it comes to films you actually want to watch on a rainy day playing hooky from work. Movies like Ghostbusters, Bachelor Party, This is Spinal Tap, Footloose, and The Terminator. Movies that were the exact opposite of the highfalutin' offerings from 1939 -- the year critics always cite as the greatest Hollywood vintage of all time. Don't get us wrong, there were some decent high-brow movies from 25 years ago, too, like Amadeus and The Killing Fields. But mostly we were talking about movies that were, you know, fun. And while some of you agreed with us about 1984's greatness, others were outraged. Apoplectic. Even concerned for our sanity. Some even made cases for other "greatest years". And we listened. That's what we do. So now, we've tallied up your nominees and narrowed it down to your »

Amy Adams Squares Up to ‘The Fighter’

30 June 2009 9:09 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

It's really a shame that Neil is out of town and won't be able to write up this particular news story since he has a major, major crush on Amy Adams. Fortunately, after seeing her in tight tan pants in Night at the Museum 2, I can go ahead and carry that torch for the Fsr family. According to /film, the actress is in the final stages of talks to star alongside Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg in The Fighter - David O. Russell's (director of Three Kings and I <3 Huckabees) picture looking at the life of boxer Micky Ward. Just last week, Christian Bale described the film as: A true story of two incredibly gifted boxers who were half-brothers. The one, Dicky Eklund, who fought Sugar Ray Leonard at a very young age, when he was twenty one, was an incredible natural talent. He lived a very hard life. Then »

'Rasputin' Axelrod Razzed on NPR Quiz Show

15 May 2009 2:25 PM, PDT | newser.com | See recent newser news »

Obama adviser David Axelrod took the bait and appeared for a taping last night of NPR’s quiz show, Wait, Wait … Don’t Tell Me! —with by turns earnest and hilarious results, Politico reports. When host Peter Sagal asked if he’d been in on the presidential pooch decision, Axelrod demurred. “I was only called in for the final three, and one was Miss California,” he said. Axelrod, tasked with answering questions about failed utopias, got some political points in, criticizing his analogue Karl Rove for “trying to run the Republican Party out of the White House” and saying the Obama presidency ... »

1994 Retrospective

16 March 2009 1:30 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

That Forrest Gump conversation got me thinking about the films of 1994 and which ones I love and which I... do not. Let's compare notes by taking a trip back through awardage and top ten lists.

The Academy chose: Forrest Gump, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Pulp Fiction, Quiz Show and Shawshank Redemption as the year's best. Bullets Over Broadway was the probable chaser (in that dread 6th spot) with a whopping 7 nominations tying Hannah and Her Sisters for the most ever for a Woody Allen feature. The Golden Globes loved the Oscar choices but with more nominees they also presented The Lion King, Legends of the Fall, Nell, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Pret a Porter and Ed Wood for your consideration.

The public's favorite films back then? Forrest Gump, The Lion King, True Lies, The Santa Clause and The Flintstones.

Siskel and Ebert were all up in Hoop Dreams »

Ralph Fiennes will direct 'Coriolanus'

8 February 2009 4:02 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Ralph Fiennes is currently rounding up financing to make his feature directing debut on William Shakespeare's "Coriolanus." According to Variety, Fiennes has already scouted Eastern European locations for the production and is in talks with Vanessa Redgrave to play a key female role. Fiennes would play the title role, Roman general Caius Martius, who returns from war and is urged by his mother Volumnia (Redgrave, possibly) to run for consul, but his ambition leads to his downfall. The "Schindler's List" and "Quiz Show" and "The Reader" star played Coriolanus to mixed reviews in London and New York city back in... »

Oscar's Biggest Blunders

7 February 2009 3:26 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

As we creep closer to the 2009 Academy Awards, prognosticators look back as much as forward to try and determine who the favorites will be. By looking back, I mean to suggest that past Academy choices perhaps unfairly paint them in a certain light, and support the group's predictability and oft-whispered bias. For instance, feel good films generally trump depressors. Oscar loves a comeback story almost as much as they love to reward seasoned veterans with lead acting awards and fresh faces in the supporting roles (particularly supporting actress). And despite a requisite surprise or two every year, they mostly play it safe. Usually painfully boringly safe. That, and the fact they get it wrong more often than they get it right. So I present a glance at the ten most egregiously shortsighted Oscars ever given.

I'm focusing solely on the big one: Best Picture. If I included anything and everything, »

First published in 1952, East of Eden is Steinbeck's retelling of the Cain and Abel story, set in California's Salinas Valley. The multigenerational story focuses on the Trask brothers and a woman who comes between the siblings. Elia Kazan (On the Waterfront) helmed a film version of the novel in 1955 with James Dean in the lead role.
