The Sherlock Holmes series with Jeremy Brett is some of the best television ever made. The Eligible Bachelor, however, proves that even the greatest stuff can contain a clunker. Wow. The first 45 minutes are a jumbled mess of repetetive, unexplained images. It goes on for so long, the viewer becomes irritated and does not care. There is way too much padding in this story and far too many weird angle shots and faux artsy visuals that are clearly trying to distract the viewer from the complete lack of a decent script(or any script). The first 45 minutes seem like a film student experimenting with different techniques. After the first 45 minutes comes a scene (finally!) that has the energy and spark of every other Sherlock Holmes episode. Unfortunately it does not last very long and we are once again subjected to a jumbled mess. If this is your first experience with Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, do not let it put you off. You just had the unfortunate luck of starting with the one awful episode. Watch every single other episode/film and you will be amazed & delighted and this confused mess will fade from memory.
