How 'Flatliners' Went From a Verb to a Noun

9 November 2009 5:05 PM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Peter McAlevey

Honestly, I’d kinda forgotten what a landmark movie it was -- “Flatliners,” that is.

Next year is its 20th anniversary, and what amazes me is that people still use the word as a noun, not a verb (as in, “He’s flatlining” ... meaning all those monitors you see in TV shows are beeping and the patient is dying). Which is what writer Peter Filardi meant when he created the phrase in the 1989 script “Flatliners.”

I know. I was the... »

Sutherland 'had no passion with Roberts'

29 May 2009 7:33 AM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Kiefer Sutherland has admitted that his relationship with Julia Roberts fizzled out because they lacked passion. The couple became engaged after co-starring in 1990's Flatliners, although Roberts later called off the marriage a few days before the wedding and began dating actor Jason Patric. Speaking to Elle, he said: "At the time, I wanted to raise horses on a farm in Montana, and she was the number one actress on the planet. That didn't create a specific rift but there was a gulf in what we actually wanted. "There was a huge connection between (more) »

Schumacher Grabs Eclectic Cast for Drug Drama

6 April 2009 1:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

We've already had The Wackness, which dealt with NYC and drug-dealing, but while that had some scary lip-on-lip action, it didn't have a murder twist -- not like this new drug drama. Variety reports that Joel Schumacher is directing Jordan Melamed's adaptation of Nick McDonell's novel Twelve. It's a book that's been compared to both Less Than Zero and Kids, and there's a pretty eclectic cast attached: Chace Crawford, Emma Roberts, Rory Culkin, 50 Cent, Ellen Barkin, and Kiefer Sutherland.

Written in 2002 by a then-17-year-old McDonell, the book follows a high school dropout and drug dealer whose life derails when his cousin is murdered on an East Harlem playground and his best friend is arrested for the crime. So we've got a gritty tale of drugs and affluence, murder, dysfunction, and it'll star a pretty boy from Gossip Girl, the girl who keeps a hotel for dogs, and her »

Movie News Wrap Up: April 6, 2009

This week:

The box office is Furious; Jack Bauer leaves 24 for Joel Schumacher’s Twelve; Paul Weitz looks at Little Fockers; Rosemarie DeWitt and Chris Cooper are Company Men; Aaron Eckhart and Nicole Kidman stare into the Rabbit Hole; we make a date for Sex and The City 2 and Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg are Prisoners.

Box office

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker raced into the number one position with Fast and Furious. The action sequel banked a massive $72 million over the weekend - showing that there is plenty of gas left in the Fast and Furious franchise. Maybe Vin Diesel will get those Riddick movies made after all.

Monster vs. Aliens dropped to second place but it still managed to gross $33 million giving the animated film a gross of over $100 million.

The Haunting in Connecticut took another $9.6 million bringing the total gross to a pretty decent $37 million.

Nicolas Cage’s hair banked another $8 million, »

Joel Schumacher Bags His Twelve Cast

6 April 2009 12:41 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Joel Schumacher (yes, he’s still making movies) has just assembled the cast for his next movie, the drug-dealer drama Twelve – and it pretty much defines ‘eclectic’.Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford, Emma Roberts – daughter of Eric, niece of Julia, distant cousin of Home & Away’s Alf, 50 ‘Curtis Jackson’ Cent, Rory Culkin, Ellen Barkin and Jack Bauer himself, Kiefer Sutherland, have all signed on to appear in the movie, based on Nick McDonell’s 2002 novel about a young New York drug dealer whose life is turned upside down when his cousin is murdered and his best friend is arrested for the crime. That’s one heck of a cast, and we’re intrigued to see how it pans out. Can Crawford carry his first big screen lead? How will Sutherland fare upon reteaming with his Lost Boys/Flatliners director? And will 50 Cent finally put in a big-screen performance that shows why people keep casting him? »

Blood Spattered Blog: 8Mm

9 March 2009 8:42 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

As of this writing, I have just completed a lengthy and fascinating interview with an actor who I have been both drawn to and repelled by for over 20 years, a unique one of a kind cinematic presence who has fascinated and frustrated me, hypnotized me and infuriated me. But no matter what his effect, Nicolas Cage has always been a presence in my life and is someone who I have defended vehemently, sometimes against my better judgment, but has nonetheless given me a series of films that are virtually part of my DNA. Stuff like the razor sharp and unhinged satire Vampire’S Kiss; the beautiful and berserk Lynch masterpiece Wild At Heart; the neo-noir of Red Rock West, the list goes on. Hell, I even loved Ghost Rider

But the chief reason I’m spilling my guts here, in my Blood Spattered Blog, about my fan relationship with Cage is that I figured, »

Before the Oscars, They Belonged to Us, Part 2

25 February 2009 2:52 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Disclaimer: This article may contain sarcasm; irony and “LOLs” proceed with caution.

Our second stab at the Oscars contains make-up effects and score (read part 1 here). The make-up effects, followed by the visual effects and technical awards, remain my favorite parts of the show; here you got to see your heroes: Rick Baker, Howard Berger, Chris Walas or Rob Bottin in the audience. Even the great Stan Winston could have been out there, back in the day. Though best known for his “visual effects” wins—he brought home an Oscar for best make-up in 1991 for Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Here genre fans can rejoice, Greg Cannom brought home the gold, again, for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Cannom, a genre elder, worked alongside (just to name a few) Fincher, Coppola, Landis, Dante, Blatty, and Cohen creating all sorts of character and creature make-ups.
