Weird but strangely satisfying..., 7 October 2001

THE TALE OF RUBY ROSE is anything BUT a mainstream production, but then, fans of Australian cinema will appreciate this: the only downside is that its audience is very small, thereby, commercially, making it a flop. If you do get a chance to catch it, be patient through the first half, when you're introduced to a Tasmanian couple living in the almost desolate highlands during the 1920s, and also to the wife's (Ruby) genuinely freaky abhorrence of darkness. Put simply, the first half is "bomb" material - the direction, acting and even sound quality is pear-shaped. The second half, however, when Ruby embarks on a perilous journey into "the valley" to search for the root cause of her fears, dating back to a horrifying childhood experience, is strangely uplifting, even given the dark settings and wonky camerawork (see? people DID use the hand-held technique before that dodgy US cop show circa mid-1990s...). If you're into alternative cinema, give this one a go...if you're not, though, don't even bother: you won't get it and you'll leave feeling let down and cheated. Overall rating: 5/10.
