Screen Queens: Hollywood Does AIDS

21 November 2009 6:49 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Hi everyone, MattCanada here with another weekly dose of gay cinema. This week we're looking at Philadelphia, the Oscar winning courtroom drama, essentially the defining Hollywood response to the AIDS epidemic.

I first saw this film as a kid. I must have been about seven when I watched it with my parents and it was definitely my, and probably many other people's, introduction to AIDS. For me it continues to shape how I think about the virus, the stigma, and the epidemic. Longtime Companion opened a few years earlier but this was the first mainstream prestige film to deal with AIDS and homophobia. Having two big stars in Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington must have seemed like a big step for Hollywood. All of this is well and good, but rewatching the film for the first time in over a decade, I had serious problems with its filmic construction and especially its politics. »

DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Exclusive Interview: Dean Stockwell (Battlestar Galactica: The Plan)

27 October 2009 10:54 PM, PDT | TVStar | See recent TVStar news »

Humans, to John Cavil (Dean Stockwell), are just a bunch of cockroaches waiting to be squashed and if he -- or better phrased it -- has his way, mankind will be crushed by their very own creation, the Cylons. Cavil, of course, is a Cylon, and fans of Battlestar Galactica glimpsed the always-sardonic Cavil and several other Cavil models in action over the course of a dozen-plus episodes of the show. Now, the Cavils are back in the new direct-to-dvd movie Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, which fills in the blanks about the Cylons' infamous plot and reveals the hows/whats/whys of several popular characters' disturbing actions. In fact, two of the Cavils -- John and Brother Cavil -- are the central figures in The Plan, which stars Dean Stockwell as the Cavils, was directed by former Battlestar Galactica regular Edward James Olmos, and is out Oct. 27 on DVD. The New Cult Canon: Married To The Mob

7 January 2009 9:01 PM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

"Drive up to the clown. It's a Burger World town." —Fast-food jingle, Married To The Mob Some directors are great because they see the world as it is; others are great because they see it as no one else could imagine. Jonathan Demme belongs in the latter category. It's a little hard to pin down that distinctive Demme touch—warm and humane without stifling earnestness, colorful without veering into grotesquerie—but his best films have a way of conforming the world to suit his oddball sensibility. Though Demme's latest effort, Rachel Getting Married (my favorite film of 2008, incidentally), concerns the calamitous results of a not-quite-reformed junkie descending on her sister's wedding, I'll remember it first and foremost as a rollicking weekend-long party. Yes, there are heartbreaking twists and turns, and more than a few painful reckonings, but Demme makes room for the full spectrum of emotions at the... »
