The first season of Tour of Duty, was filmed at the Schoffield Barracks in Hawaii. Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed at the old set of M*A*S*H* in California.
Helicopter scenes with the character John McKay, were filmed on the ground with the rotors of the helicopter turning.
In the 3rd season, the platoon joins the SOG. The Studies and Observations Group, which is an elite commando-style unit that operates behind the lines in Cambodia and Laos. The SOG recruits its members from the Special Forces, Navy SEALs, Marine Force Recon, and Ranger/LRRP units, not from basic infantry soldiers.
The end credit black-and-white photos are by David Hume Kennerly, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography during the Vietnam War.
Sgt. Anderson's full name is Clayton Ezekiel Anderson. "Zeke" is short for his middle name.
