  • Inspired by the success of Platoon (1986) a year earlier.

  • The first season of Tour of Duty, was filmed at the Schoffield Barracks in Hawaii. Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed at the old set of M*A*S*H* in California.

  • Helicopter scenes with the character John McKay, were filmed on the ground with the rotors of the helicopter turning.

  • In the 3rd season, the platoon joins the SOG. The Studies and Observations Group, which is an elite commando-style unit that operates behind the lines in Cambodia and Laos. The SOG recruits its members from the Special Forces, Navy SEALs, Marine Force Recon, and Ranger/LRRP units, not from basic infantry soldiers.

  • The end credit black-and-white photos are by David Hume Kennerly, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography during the Vietnam War.

  • Sgt. Anderson's full name is Clayton Ezekiel Anderson. "Zeke" is short for his middle name.
