Hey Chicago, The Zombie Outbreak is Coming!

13 November 2009 3:43 AM, PST | HugAZombie | See recent HugAZombie news »

Chicago is a great town, one I used to live in for many years and tomorrow, November 14, will be the viction of Zombie Outbreak, a 8-hour zombie film marathon put on by HorrorSociety.com.

Watch Colin, the British zombie movie made for only £45 punds and was a hit at Cannes, Zombie Girl: The Movie about a twelve-year girl making a zombie, and Pathogen, the movie she made. Closing out the night is the classic Return of the Living Dead.

For $12 (or $10 online), you could do way worse. If I was still living there, I would go. And no, we get nothing for helping promote this festival.

Here's the schedule:

4:00 pm Doors Open

5:00 pm The Basement

5:10 pm Tales from the Script Promo

5:20 pm Sub Hub Trailer

5:25 pm Fleshbeast

6:00 pm Chemical 12-d

6:10 pm Scott Kenmore

6:15 pm Break

6:45 pm Colin

The Video Dead (Almost) on DVD

12 November 2009 4:03 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

You remember the VHS cover: a zombie, clawing its way out of a TV set. And that title? Totally 80’s, totally in blue neon with drippy, gruesome, haunted house lettering: The Video Dead, my friends. Heck it used to be on USA every Saturday growing up, hawked by Rhonda Shear or Commander USA. Well, as you know, it’s not on DVD ... yet.

Cut to: Mr. Chris MacGibbon — ghoul about town, trying to do the right thing, giving us another shot of 80’s zombies, finally. I had the pleasure of throwing a few questions Chris’ way and if we all play our cards right, we’ll be slipping The Video Dead right next to our copies of Humaniods From the Deep. Why? Because we can, and we’ll have Chris to thank for it.

Heather Buckley: When was the first time you watched The Video Dead?

Chris MacGibbon: I first »

Bsb: In Praise of Fright Night

8 November 2009 10:40 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

When you scrape away the death obsessed subtext and technicalities of the process, watching and loving horror films should be just plain fun, exhilarating fun, a complete escape into another parallel world that echoes our own. If it's not, if you find yourself labouring to find that simple joyous eye of the proverbial needle, well then, perhaps you should just give up the pursuit of terror geekdome altogether.

For me, speaking as someone who was literally born into a world where the people that done made me loved dark movies and weird entertainments and fully endorsed my obsessions with my growing "id", horror films will forever be tied to the sweetest moments of my youth. From those secret late night, school night, TV movie binges to sneaking into R rated films after buying PG tickets, horror was my first rebellion against the mainstream so embraced by my peers and the »

MattFini's Halloween Top 10 Lists: Most Memorable End Credit Songs

27 October 2009 4:52 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

I set out to create a list of the most memorable horror songs, which slowly morphed into a collection of the most memorable end credit horror songs. And now I suppose it’s a list of the ten most memorable 80s end credit horror songs. But I didn’t set out with that as a guideline. It just sort of happened that way. In looking over this list now, I’m left to wonder why nobody puts much effort into the end credits music these days. Since it’s the last impression the viewer has of a film, why not make it memorable?

That’s what these songs have in common.

Some are genuinely cool while others are downright baffling, but I’ve never forgotten them. Even the head scratchers. For your listening pleasure, I’ve included links to all the songs should you need a refresher. And, as always, »

Satan’s Screener Takes On Mama Dracula

27 October 2009 5:56 AM, PDT | HorrorYearbook | See recent HorrorYearbook news »

Well it finally happened. Mark looks at a movie that features an Academy Award Winner (who did the flick post win), and suffers through a horrible movie that he despises, even though it has a bunch of tits in it. It has to be the worst horror-comedy that he's ever seen and he's made it through a shitload of shitty horror comedies like Die Hard Dracula, Return Of The Living Dead 2,4, and 5, Dracula: Dead And Loving It, Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Halloween, etc. etc. etc. Heck, Reanimator Academy was easier to get through than this flick! »

Romero and best-selling author Max Brooks, it traces the evolution of the Zombie from its roots in African folklore and Haitian Voodoo to its current role as pop culture icon. Weekly Poll Results: Best Zombie Movie

7 October 2009 9:31 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

I don't think anyone will be surprised to see George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead top last week's poll, but wow... it was an extremely close race between the top 3 choices. Edgar Wright's Shaun of the Dead and Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later just barely fell short of the #1 spot, while Romero's original Night of the Living Dead and Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake rounded out the top 5. I fully acknowledge that Day of the Dead should have also been on this list (as many of you have pointed out), particularly in place of Evil Dead 2 (although Evil Dead 2 did still get a fair number of votes). I guess I just thought Romero had already been fairly represented. Other than that, do you agree with the results? I'm a little disappointed that Return of the Living Dead was way down at the bottom, but then again, »

Sound On Sight Radio #159 - Zombieland

6 October 2009 12:29 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The eating of human flesh is one of the last great taboos in Western society, despite the fact that the world’s hunger issues could be easily be solved by eating everyone who looks like they taste of Popeye’s chicken. Perhaps that’s why zombie films are so popular, as they touch on deep-seated, primal fears. As to why zombie comedies find such success, perhaps it’s because for every person quivering with disgust at the reanimated dead, there are two others with computer folders full of dead baby jokes, hatecore, and photos of car wrecks turned into motivational posters. Tonight, Sound on Sight takes a look at the zombie comedy phenomenon, as we review this week’s number one film, Zombieland, as well as British rom-zom-com Shaun of the Dead, and 1985’s Return of the Living Dead. listen now [1] Listen now Listen on I-Tunes [2] RSS feeds [3] Sound On »

Fantastic Fest Review: Yesterday

4 October 2009 9:49 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Does the zombie genre have anything new to offer? I say no, but then again I'm not a filmmaker.  The only way a zombie movie can stand out in a genre crowded with the undead is to do what it does better than everyone else. The movie needs to compete with the goriest (Dead Alive), the scariest (28 Days Later (not technically zombies, I know)), or the funniest (Return of the Living Dead (yes it is funnier than Shaun of the Dead)) zombie movies already out there. But what do you do if your budget consists of little more than pocket change and your cast and crew consists solely of amateurs? And if that isn't bad enough, what do you do if you're Canadian? If you're writer/director Rob Grant you invite all your friends and neighbors to work on the movie both in front of the camera and behind, and you pool everyone's pocket change together into »

Fall Frights: Feast (Film Review)

4 October 2009 3:12 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Feast - Fangoria Archives: Originally Published 9/2006

At long last, the bygone era of the 1980s creature feature has made its long-delayed and splashy return to the big screen with John Gulager’s Feast, a rock-’em-sock-’em gross-out bloodbath that echoes the days of Evil Dead II, Return Of The Living Dead and maybe a smidgen of Gargoyles. But here’s the heartbreaker: It’s apparent this film is the malicious, placenta-devouring offspring of three individuals (Gulager and writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton) who have created something—thanks to Project Greenlight—expressing their fervid obsession with the genre. However, it just falls short of delivering the double-barrel blast of cult flavor that would make this one an eternal midnight fix. Gulager came close, »

Directions to Zombieland

2 October 2009 2:28 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

If someone were to tell you about a new zombie comedy by a first-time feature director, shot on HD, most likely your thoughts wouldn’t turn to a large-scale adventure starring Woody Harrelson. Yet that’s exactly what Zombieland (now playing from Columbia Pictures) is: a loud, fun major-studio horror/comedy. As you can imagine, it was quite an undertaking for Ruben Fleischer to make this his big-screen debut—and one everyone around him was wary of.

“With a young director, the natural instinct is to question what they’re doing, especially when they’re dealing with people who are so experienced,” says Fleischer, whose background is largely in television. “There’s a degree of taking on the role of director, and you’ve got to step into those boots. I’m not the most confident or outgoing person in the day-to-day, but when you’re in charge of a »

Zombieland (Pat's Film Review)

1 October 2009 11:07 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

It's only fitting that the first thing you see in Zombieland is a small American flag--just like the one in the opening of George Romero's Night Of The Living Dead, because it's a fun exploration of the entire Living Dead genre as a coming of age movie.

Zombieland plays like an alternate adventure taking place in the universe of Zack Snyder's Dawn Of The Dead. Fast zombies are the order of the day and we learn via flashback that fat people were the first ones to go. The opening credits neatly encapsulate the end of society as the zombie virus spreads.

Nerdy, virginal "Columbus" (Jesse Eisenberg) stays alive through his anal retentive series of rules, such as "Cardio", so you can outrun sprinting zombies and "Avoid Bathrooms"--because the undead like to hide in there. His rule "Don't be a hero" is especially good--because every hero in a Romero »

'Night Of The Living Dead' Zombies Terrorize MTV's Gore Girls

1 October 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Welcome to Gore Girls! MTV contributor Terri Schwartz doesn't know crap about the horror genre, and she's volunteered to be our Movies Blog guinea pig. She has a good guide too. Fellow contributor Jenni Miller is a bonafide horror enthusiast, and she's willing to walk Terri through her formative experiences with blood, guts, monsters and maniacs. Together, this dynamic duo are horror's own odd couple, The Gore Girls!!! Good luck Terri... you're definitely going to need it.

This week's movie is one that really needs no introduction. If you know what a zombie is, then chances are that you also have at least some passing familiarity with George A. Romero's seminal work, "Night of the Living Dead." The term "zombie" wasn't born until much later, but the shambling, flesh-eating undead that terrorize the movie's human players were the template for all of the zombies to come.

If you’re in the Philadelphia area, there will be no better way to spend the weekend before Halloween than at Exhumed Films’  third annual 24-Hour Horror-thon. The event runs from noon to noon on Saturday-Sunday, October 24-25 at Philly’s International House (3701 Chestnut Street).

The Horror-thon will screen 13 fright features in a wide variety of subgenres (slasher, zombie, monster, etc.), largely from the 1970s and ’80s and all from prints. The titles will be kept secret until they’re unspooling, but to give you an idea, the past two editions treated audiences to big-screenings of classics like Halloween, A Nightmare On Elm Street, An American Werewolf In London, Hellraiser, Phantasm and The Return Of The Living Dead, cult faves such as Demons, Alligator, Dead & Buried, Pieces, Blacula and The Food Of The Gods and rarely shown gems like Island Of The Damned (a.k.a. George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead Movie Review

23 September 2009 8:00 PM, PDT | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

George A. Romero is a name synonymous with the zombie sub-genre. The man has been at it for so long that the first entry in his “of the Dead” series was in black and white for Christ’s sake. If it weren’t for him, films like “28 Days/Weeks Later,” “Return of the Living Dead,” “Dawn of the Dead 2004″ and “Shaun of the Dead” would never exist, among many others. Not only has the man inspired some great zombie films, but he’s made quite a few of his own. “Survival of the Dead” is his most recent and it’s e... »

Review: Jennifer’s Body

18 September 2009 8:24 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The successful horror comedy is a rare and elusive find. Not only does it need to be both scary and funny, but it has to blend the two together in almost perfect symmetry.  Some of the best films that strike an ideal balance between terrors and laughs include An American Werewolf In London, Return of the Living Dead, Re-Animator, and Fright Night.  They're the best of an already small group. And now Jennifer's Body can be added to the list... of horror comedies not nearly as good as the four classics above. We first meet Needy Lesnicky (Amanda Seyfried) in a mental ward for troubled teens. She narrates the story of what led her to end up wearing a jumpsuit and bunny slippers, and it all starts with her best friend, Jennifer Check.  Jennifer is played by Megan Fox which means contractually we're first introduced to her in her underwear.  The »
