Powerful story by Derry Moran gives a clear and simple message: DON'T TAKE THE CHILDREN AWAY FROM THEIR PARENTS. First we had the Stolen Generation(s) of young Aboriginal children – and then, in a bewildering answer to calls of blatant racism, social workers turned their attention to all and sundry. It continues even today: but there is no excuse for separating a child from its parents who love it. Hehir does a commendable job as the alcoholic Sid, but it's young Samuels who steals the show as his innocent, impoverished but ever cheerful, doting son. Miller is in one of his best roles, and Gibney's character, a middle-class bleeding-heart social worker, is wonderfully written: she really thinks she's doing the right thing. It _is_ just a film, however, a point which comes through loud and clear with the unrealistic (but still reasonably possible) finish. Staggeringly ignored at the AFI Awards, but other films released in the same year (A Street to Die, Fran, Emma's War, Wrong World, Emoh Ruo and Bliss) were also centred around a social problem theme.
