Columbus Day Tales Of Discovery, Real And Imagined

12 October 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Today is Columbus Day, a federal holiday when people are meant to take some time to reflect on the 1492 arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World, the continents now known as North and South America. Most people just use the free day to brunch, shop and chill, but it's really one of those half holidays where only certain members of the gainfully employed community actually have the time off.

Still, the message of exploration, discovery, is always worth reflecting on. There are few untouched regions left on this planet, so discovery has become more of a scientific pursuit than a geographical one. The joy of being the first to lay eyes on a new land somehow remains relatable however; cinema especially has never shied away from themes of exploration and discovery, even in its earliest days. After the jump you'll see some examples of our favorite discovery flicks.

Exclusive: Down in The Hole - An Interview with Joe Dante

21 September 2009 11:14 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In Joe Dante’s latest film, The Hole (to be released in 2010, see our review here), two brothers (Chris Massoglia and Nathan Gamble) discover a bottomless hole in their basement. After opening it, they awaken an evil force that preys upon their deepest fears: clowns, the chilling return of lost, loved ones and other surprises. So what would director Joe Dante (pictured left on the cover of Fangoria #38) see reaching out for him if he were to peer down into the abyss?

“My fears related to giant insects and the bomb dropping,” he reveals. “In the era that I grew up, we pretty much lived under the idea that at any minute the world could end. I remember in grade school, we would walk in and kids would say that the bomb could drop right now and we’d all be dead. And so, it’s just something you carry »

Tiff '09 Review: 'The Hole'

16 September 2009 3:34 PM, PDT | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

Back when most of my friends were geeking out over their Mike Schmidt baseball cards or Spider-Man comic books, I was cataloging my own list of favorites. Sure, me and all my neighborhood friends loved baseball, comic books, and video games, but I'm pretty sure I was the only one who knew that Cujo and Cat's Eye were directed by the same guy; that the guy who directed Red Dawn also did Conan the Barbarian; and that Joe Dante was the man to thank for Piranha, The Howling, Gremlins, Explorers, and Innerspace. Obviously none of my pals really cared about this stuff, which is why they're all bankers and doctors whereas I'm a film critic and, um, the manager of a movie blog. It was with no small dose of enthusiasm... »

Toronto Buyers Club: Top 10 Most Sought After Titles at Tiff 2009

26 August 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- It was pandemonium at last year's North American premiere screening for The Wrestler. Buyers had either skipped Venice or waited to gauge the crowd reaction in Toronto at the Elgin. Fox Searchlight swooped in and grabbed the rights in the 4 million dollar range. I'm predicting that there will be no shortage of such scenarios at the 09' edition of the Tiff and I say this despite the weak economy and the exit of many players. With less art house films studio divisions in the mix, and more truly independent companies emerging into the domestic distribution sphere, I'm predicting that the volume of films bought will be just as strong as any year this past decade, however, comparatively at a less "inflated" price-tag. While I'm more curious about who'll end up with Todd Solondz's Life During Wartime, Werner Herzog's My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?, Rick Jacobson's Bitch Slap, »

Comic Con 2009: RopeofSilicon Goes Geek for a Week

22 July 2009 12:55 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

In less than six hours from the time I started typing this sentence I will be on a plane leaving sunny Seattle, Washington for 80-degree weather and 70% humidity in the sauna known as San Diego for my fourth trip to the San Diego Comic Con and while this was the week we began looking at the potential Oscar nominees it is also the week we will take a look at next summer's blockbusters. Then again, even Oscar has a presence at this year's Con. Of course, I could make a bit of a stretch citing the attendance from Oscar nominees (and some winners) including Peter Jackson, Denzel Washington, Jackie Earle Haley, Josh Brolin, Robert Downey Jr., Diablo Cody, Jason Reitman, Nicolas Cage, Terry Gilliam, Robert Zemeckis, Jennifer Connelly, Woody Harrelson and Don Cheadle, but I think you all know who I am talking about... Before the Oscars, They Belonged to Us, Part 3

26 February 2009 2:51 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Disclaimer: This article may contain sarcasm; irony and “LOLs” proceed with caution.

The Final Chapter (read Part 2 here)! We have Howard the Duck, Freejack and Shyamalan flicks on the list; these are never good signs. Nonetheless we are bringing it all to you in full-color and in 3-D. (Ed. Note: Due to the economy, 3-D has been dropped and will be replaced by Smell-o-vision — check for your scratch and sniff cards in about 4-6 weeks.) Best Sound went to rage-zombie veterans Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke, leaving Mark Weingarten who worked on Rejuvenatrix in the dust. The Sound Editing section contains one too many references to Ron Silver, and at least two references to a Roger Corman film.

The visual effects category pulled on our heartstrings this year due to the loss of Stan Winston, who was noted en memoriam along with other heroes, Vampira, Leonard Rosenman and Charles H. Schneer »
