Given man's unwavering fascination with woman, it's no surprise that the female star acts as the anchor to a dominant portion of horror pictures. I mean really, who wants to see a bare chested man tearin ass through the woods screaming at the top of his lungs while a bladed assailant nips at his heels? I don't - I know that much, although I'm certain there are plenty of men who would disagree (and that's okay with me, to each his own!). The simple fact remains however, women bring a unique appeal and certain sensual atmosphere to film that no man ever could. And it's not all about gratuitous T&A.
There's a comforting quality in the hands of the heroine; a fascinating maternal strength that, as a man I cannot genuinely relate to. I can however admire, and in many cases it's nearly impossible to not admire the lone »

A fellow writer on another site pointed out something today: We like to complain that there isn't any good horror movie programming going on in NYC, but there's almost always something going on if you look hard enough. Of course, you're not likely to see catch NYC's finest horror programming on many of the other sites, seeing as all those shockers are far too centrally located in disgusting California. (I see what you did there...) Who has the time to search through the hundreds of theater listings in Manhattan to find a good batch of flicks playing. We do! We do!
There's the Scary Movies 3 Film series at the Walter Reade Theater by Lincoln Center (classy!), the Brooklyn Academy of Music (Bam) has a Creepy Cat series coming up and a number of other genre flicks programmed for October, and The Sunshine Landmark Cinema in Manhattan Always has a midnight cult-flick screening every Friday-Saturday-Sunday, »

I like most horror fans have been clamoring for Dario Argento to deliver us something as interesting and exciting as some of his early works. I love stuff like Opera, Phenomena (or Creepers as I remember renting it as a kid), Tenebre (aka Unsane), Deep Red and of course Susperia. Hell, I even love Jenifer, his episode for the first season of Masters Of Horror, but... aside from that, I really haven't enjoyed Dario's work in quite some time.
With that said, I was able to get my hands on the script that Jim Agnew & Sean Keller wrote for Giallo shortly after they wrapped shooting last year. I literally read it impatiently in one sitting. I truly believe it to be a terrific script and it gave me hope that Dario could potentially deliver his best film if only he could translate this script to film properly. And with Adian Brody as the lead, »

I have to say that the junket for 9 was a bit of a movie geek fest for me. First I got to chat with Elijah .Frodo. Wood, and then I had the opportunity to sit face to face with the absolutely stunning Jennifer Connelly. Sure she has done some really terrific films with A Beautiful Mind, House Of Sand & Fog, Little Children and yes, Labyrinth. But it was Dario Argento.s cult classic Phenomena that had me most excited. Now the funny thing is, when I walked into the interview, I... »

Creepshow (Bd) - Warner Bros.
Amazon.com says: Inspired by the controversial E.C. Comics of the 1950s--which also provided the title and inspiration for the popular Tales from the Crypt TV series--director George Romero and screenwriter Stephen King serve up five delightfully frightful stories. Utilizing comic-book panels, animated segues, and exaggerated lighting and camera angles, Romero and cinematographer Michael Gornick come very close to replicating a horror comic in film format. The results mix fine acting with the morbid sense »

Founded in 2003, Italian glam-cyberrockers Dope Stars Inc. are an interesting band. They have the look, sound, and track record to entitle them to a plethora of rockstar attitudes. However, after interviewing them, I discovered that they’re just like us: fans of music and horror movies. Throughout this interview it’s clear that these influences have factored into the gradual development of the band. It’s also clear that they’re just average guys, working hard to make their dreams become flesh, and to make their music become art. A few weeks ago I reviewed their forthcoming Ep release of Criminal Intents/Morning Star for Fangoria Musick (read that here). When I got it from Metropolis Records I was blown away: it was like Industrial had mated with Glam Rock in some kind of weird Kirk-on-Spock porno! I immediately got in touch with Dsi, sent like twenty emails back and forth, »

Monarch Video has a pair of very different genre films set for DVD release in the coming months. First up is the true-life serial-killer film The Gray Man, followed by the Sci Fi Channel monster mash War Wolves; see the art for both below.
Gray Man, directed by Scott L. Flynn and streeting April 28, tells the story of a detective (Jack Conley) attempting to track down Albert Fish (played by Phenomena’s Patrick Bauchau), a child killer/cannibal, in the early 20th century.
War Wolves, written and directed by and starring Michael Worth, deals with a special ops team tracking a lycanthropic soldier even as three of its female members have also been afflicted by the monstrous curse. The cast also includes genre faves John Saxon, Tim Thomerson and Adrienne Barbeau, and the street date is June 23. Both discs present the movies in widescreen, with no special features currently announced; retail price is $24.95 each. »

The deeper I delve into writing, the more movies and literature I digest. My biggest obstacle at this point is not finding the material, it’s finding the time to watch it, and the money to purchase it all. After consistently emptying my bank account on countless DVD’s and books over the last few months, I really started to ask myself one question: How the hell can I pick all this stuff up quickly and affordably? Well, an obvious solution occurred to me - why not seek out box sets?
While Ebay is my one stop shop for books (I recommend it to all), DVD’s are not always as easy to track down, so I decided to highlight 15 cool box sets which will enable you to beef up your collection without breaking your pocket book.
