Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (Film Review)

3 November 2009 3:27 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Note: This review does contain minor Spoilers

Cheerfully gory and revolting, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever is the fun sequel to Eli Roth's cult classic that recently made it's debut on the last night of Screamfest L.A.

Starting immediately after the events of the first film, Paul (top-billed Rider Strong in a two-minute cameo) climbs out of the creek with the virus eating away at him, and he's promptly mowed down by a schoolbus (hardly a 'spoiler', having been revealed in the film's marketing materials).

The bottled water company from the first film delivers drinks contaminated with the flesh-eating virus to a local high school, where likable John (Noah Segan) and his nerdy friend Alex (Rusty Kelley) attend class. John has an unrequited crush on Cassie (Alexi Wasser), but is afraid of her angry kickboxer boyfriend.

By the plot, you can see the sequel is a classic John Hughes movie set-up, »

A look back at Night Of The Comet

27 October 2009 11:14 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

So you just saw Zombieland and you're desperately looking for another fun zombie-filled end of the world movie with strong female characters? Look no further than the brilliant '80s horror comedy Night Of The Comet!

When a comet passes over the earth, rendering everyone witnessing it into red dust, the only survivors are two Valley Girl sisters, responsible Regina (Catherine Mary Stewart) and her little sister, spoiled cheerleader Samantha (Kelli Maroney).

The two girls wander Southern California, enjoying malls without crowds, driving fast through empty streets and even DeeJaying at an abandoned radio station (Samantha cheerfully announces she'll be taking requests "from all you teenage mutant comet zombies!"). In a funny commentary on boy/girl relations, when Regina and Samantha run into some teenage box boys, they plan to kill and eat the girls!

Night brings in a secret underground lab, a virus, and other apocalyptic motifs, but never »

TV Review: The Vampire Diaries 1.06, “Lost Girls”

17 October 2009 2:02 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

“You can hate me, but I need you to trust me.” – Stefan Salvatore

Getting into your massive SUV and driving home after you just found out that your boyfriend is a vampire sounds like a good idea to me. I mean, there’s virtually zero chance of getting into a massive car accident—which, by the way, is what messed up your life and drove you into your new boyfriend’s —by driving while emotionally distressed.

This week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, 1.06: “Lost Girls”, might be wrought with young people making stupid decisions, but those decisions are what give me a bit more hope for the remainder of the show’s first season. First, Elena decides to let Stefan explain himself, then Damon decides to “befriend” Vicki (whose whole love triangle storyline was getting extremely tired) and “help her” with her pathetic existence, then Vicki decides to go to the Gilberts’ house, »

More horror screenings and Zombie Walks!

14 October 2009 12:17 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Halloween is coming, and fright flicks are everywhere at repertory houses and special showings. Joining the screening events we previously listed here and here are more big-screen revivals of classic fear films, plus a couple of East Coast Zombie Walks!

• Canadian undead fans can take part in the 7th Annual Toronto Zombie Walk, which takes place Saturday, October 24 beginning at 3 p.m. This one starts at Trinity Bellwoods Park (meeting place is the pit between Dundas Street and, appropriately enough, Gore Vale Avenue) and ends at the Bloor Cinema (506 Bloor Street West), where the festivities continue with a Cinema of the Dead double feature of Thom Eberhardt’s Night Of The Comet and Lucio Fulci’s Zombie. Admission to the movies is $16 for ghouls and $20 for regular humans; more info on the Walk can be seen here, and on the screenings here.

• This year’s official New York City Zombie Crawl takes place Sunday, »

A look back at Sole Survivor (DVD Review)

19 September 2009 8:12 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

An unjustly overlooked '80s horror film that predates the popular Final Destination series, Sole Survivor is a scary, surprising low budget classic.

Denise (Anita Skinner) survives a jetliner crash that kills everyone else on board, but she survives without a scratch. This is shown, with her still buckled in her seat in the wreckage, the other passengers who we just saw alive all mangled and twisted around her.

Because of her survival, Denise feels unworthy, with a strong survivors guilt over living through it. She learns of something known as "sole survivor syndrome", where the one person who makes it through a traumatic incident like this is usually dead within five years after the event, through suicide or a recklessness that puts them in dangerous situations. Jeff Bridges goes through the same feelings in Peter Weir's acclaimed Fearless.

Denise realizes that not all these deaths come from suicide or alcoholism, »

The Vampire Diaries: Episode 2 Night of the Comet

19 September 2009 6:46 AM, PDT | HorrorYearbook | See recent HorrorYearbook news »

There were a few changes in The Vampire Diaries series premiere that I wasn’t thrilled with. Not simply, because they were different, but because I feared in the long run it would take away some of the quality of the original text. I have stated my thoughts on all of that though and realize that the series is going to be a different take on the original novels. The second episode of the series opens up on the dark, shadowed woods amongst teenage promiscuity. Sounds like the perfect set up for Jason Voorhees to come slice up some teenage sluts to have his revenge. The teens are faced with death, but in the form of a powerful vampire. »

The Vampire Diaries: The Night Of The Comet

18 September 2009 10:44 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

(S01E02) Two episodes in and I'm totally on board with the bad-ass Damon love. People, he is so evil! And he looks like Rob Lowe. What is not to love? The second episode of Vampire Diaries was way more watchable than the pilot, mainly because we don't have to suffer through so much boring character exposition. This really freed up the writers to get creative with Damon and Stefan, which was a great boost. And aside from some scenery chewing at the end, a very well paced and exciting episode.

The Vampire Diaries Round Table: "Night of the Comet"

18 September 2009 9:46 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Following this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries, we can't say enough good things about Ian Somerhalder as Damon.

That will be evident below, as our staff gathers for its weekly Round Table discussion of the series. What did we like best about "Night of the Comet?" Where does it all go from here? Let's get right to it...

Will Ian Somerhalder win an Emmy Award?

VDLover: Haha, it may be early to ask that question, but I was blown away by his performance this week. He makes Damon creepy, funny and intense, all at once. Not an easy balance to achieve.

DoMeDamon: Somerhalder really does walk a fine, perfect line in his portrayal. If he were too light-hearted, no one could take his evil side seriously; if he were full of rage at all times, it would take away from the times when he really goes off (like with »

TV Review: The Vampire Diaries 1.2 “The Night of the Comet”

18 September 2009 8:10 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

It looks like I may be eating my words before the fall television season is over. The Vampire Diaries episode 1.2, “The Night of the Comet”, aired on The CW last night, and much to my dismay there was a noticeable decline in the quality of the episode’s dialogue as compared to that of the series’ pilot. We are already well aware that the scenes in which Elena writes in her diary, with the obligatory voiceover by Nina Dobrev (Elena), are pretty hokey, but these sequences are acceptably contrived given the fact that the show is called The Vampire Diaries. Granted the diary sequences could benefit from some close-up shots of what Elena is actually writing rather than a series of wide establishing shots of Elena sitting in her room as she scribbles away, but this is The CW, not HBO.

My disbelief over the perceptible shift in dialogue of »

The Vampire Diaries: Preview of Episode 2 "The Night of the Comet"

16 September 2009 11:00 PM, PDT | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

There's no telling how far Damon would go to get what he wants but it's pretty clear from the pilot episode of The Vampire Diaries that he's dead serious in making Stefan's life miserable, whether it means letting Stefan take the blame for a recent attack or coming in between Stefan and his love interest Elena. And it looks as though the love triangle officially begins tonight in the episode called "The Night of the Comet."
