Ben Kingsley to Play Another Famous Indian Luminary in Taj

2 hours ago | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Back in 1982, Ben Kingsley gave a world renowned Oscar winning performance playing Gandhi in Richard Attenborough's Gandhi. He's never played him again, and probably never will, leaving that performance to live on forever. However, according to The Guardian, Kingsley is now attached to play another "instrumental figure in Indian history" as Shah Jahan, the man who built the Taj Mahal back in the 1600s. Sbk Pictures, Kingsley's company, made the announcement recently and confirmed that Kingsley would be producing as well. Taj, as the project will be titled, will have a $25 to $30 million budget (which is pretty big for India). "With my passion for India and the Taj Mahal now becoming one of the seven wonders of the World, I am compelled to ask 'why' and 'how' this scream of grief frozen in marble came into being," Kingsley said in the statement. "It is an indelible monument to ... »

Anglo-Indian actor Sir Ben Kingsley - real name Krishna Pandit Vhanji - is to be seen rebuilding the Taj Mahal in the epic period movie Taj. He will be playing the role of Shah Jahan who created the monument in honour of his wife Mumtaz, who dies whilst giving birth to his 14th child. "With my passion for India and the Taj Mahal now becoming one of the Seven Wonders of the World, I am compelled to ask 'why' and 'how' this scream of grief frozen in marble came into being," said Sir Ben. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will play Mumtaz.

Although famous for his Oscar-winning role in Gandhi nearly thirty years ago, Sir Ben’s first Bollywood movie won’t appear until next year. Teen Patti is due for release on February 12th. Also starring Amitabh Bachchan, R Madhavan, Raima Sen and Shraddha Kapoor, it promises to be a real knockout of a movie. »

Ben Kingsley to Build the Taj Majal

25 November 2009 12:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In 1982, Ben Kingsley became Mahatma Gandhi in Richard Attenborough's Gandhi. The film instantly became a classic and went on to dominate the Oscars, earning Best Picture, Director, Actor, Writing, Editing, Costume Design, Cinematography, and Art Direction. And even though those are ridiculously enormous shoes to fill, the Guardian reports that Kingsley is heading back to Indian history to play Shah Jahan, the emperor who built the Taj Mahal.

Back in the mid-1600s, Shah Jahan was a Mughal Emperor who was devastated when his favorite (third) wife Mumtaz Mahal died while giving birth to their fourteenth child. In her honor, he decided to erect a grand mausoleum that would not only be epically impressive and beautiful, but also so glorious that sins would be washed away. It took roughly 21 years to create and has been included on some Seven Wonders of the World lists.

Kingsley Takes On Story Of Taj Mahal

25 November 2009 8:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Gandhi star Sir Ben Kingsley will travel back in time to delve deeper into Indian history - he's set to portray the emperor who built the Taj Mahal.

The Oscar-winning actor has signed to play Shah Jahan in Taj, opposite Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as his wife Mumtaz Mahal.

The emperor ordered the construction of the Indian landmark in 1632 in memory of his third wife, who had died while giving birth to their 14th child.

Mahal's body was later stored in the tomb of the architectural wonder.

Kingsley's production company Sbk Pictures will back the project, which is estimated at between $25 and $30 million (£15.6 and £18.75 million).

In a statement, Kingsley says, "With my passion for India and the Taj Mahal now becoming one of the Seven Wonders of the World, I am compelled to ask 'why' and 'how' this scream of grief frozen in marble came into being." »

Twenty-seven years after he won an Oscar for Gandhi, Ben Kingsley will return to play another instrumental figure in Indian history, as Shah Jahan - the man who built the Taj Mahal

He won an Oscar playing Mohandas Gandhi in Richard Attenborough's 1982 biopic of the Indian leader. Twenty seven years on, Ben Kingsley looks set to delve into subcontinental history books once again as part of a new project which will see him star as the Mogul emperor who built the Taj Mahal.

The actor will play Shah Jahan in Taj, a $25-$30m (£15m-£18m) project which he is also producing, his firm Sbk Pictures said in a statement today. Indian superstar and former Miss World, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, has agreed to appear as Mumtaz Mahal, Jahan's favoured wife and the woman whose death in childbirth inspired the construction of the world-famous building between 1632 and 1654.

There're 11 short films and as many directors. And the cast includes 35-40 formidable star-actors. Getting them all to attend the premiere in New York was a costly affair. Happy Birthday, Gandhi: Wake-Up Video

2 October 2009 5:30 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Today marks the birthday of Mohandas Gandhi, the worldwide father of civil disobedience and peaceful revolution. It's a national holiday in India, as well as a day where the world is meant to reflect on non-violent alternatives. Gandhi began his professional life as a lawyer who fought for civil rights in South Africa, then returned home to his native India for a spiritual and political career that saw him fight for the rights of women and religious freedom. The centerpiece of his work were the peaceful protests he organized, many of which were to stand against the tyranny of outside influences and taxes from the British. Through the power of fasts, sit-ins and other forms of non-violent protest, Gandhi laid the ground work for a number of other peaceful movements worldwide — including the civil rights movement in the United States. Tragically, the man who made his life setting aside violence »

"10 Rillington Place" Now At Film Forum, New York

By David Savage

Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Sir Richard Attenborough's directorial career is studded with such achievements as Gandhi, A Bridge Too Far, Magic and Chaplin, among others, but his role as an actor has been no less affecting, if under-appreciated. His performances such films as The Sand Pebbles (1966) and Conduct Unbecoming (1975) have played an integral part in making those classics. Even in supporting roles, such as 1993's Jurassic Park, his presence lends the film an air of gravitas and credibility that few other actors can bring. However, one of his finest lead roles goes rarely seen these days: as infamous British serial killer John Christie in 10 Rillington Place (1970), directed by Richard Fleischer and co-starring a young John Hurt. Currently screening through July 2nd in a newly restored 35mm print at New York's Film Forum, this film version of a true story is a definite don't-miss, »
