Variety has reported that Joe Dante’s 1981 werewolf classic The Howling is getting a Hollywood makeover.
Producers Joel Kastelberg (Highball) and Etchie Stroh (The Promise) want to reboot the franchise as The Howling: Reborn. Taking on both writing and directing duties will be former studio marketing executive Joe Nimziki, who will be making his feature length film debut with this project.
The original film spawned six terrible sequels released from 1985 to 1995, which were never meant to be anything more than a long, drawn-out attempt to cash in on the original cult classic. Some may argue that this is exactly why the series should be rebooted, but in my opinion remakes hardly ever surpass the original, and in an era of Hollywood where most films seem to be remakes/reboots/re-imaginings or sequels/prequels,
I would prefer for Kastelberg, Stroh, and Nimziki to make an original werewolf movie completely independent »

With New Moon's lupine shapeshifters bounding on the big screen and a remake of The Wolfman due next February, lycanthropy is proving popular in Hollywood.
So much so that werewolf franchise The Howling is to sprout fur and fangs once again.
The original 1981 horror flick, directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins, Piranha) and based on Gary Brandner's novel of the same name, spawned six sequels, the most recent in 1995.
Now, producers Joel Kastelberg and Etchie Stroh are relaunching the franchise with the forthcoming The Howling: Reborn, says Variety.
Former studio marketing executive Joe Nimziki will write and make his directing debut on the project, which is slated for a Halloween release next year. Production is scheduled to begin in February.
The original's executive producers Steve Lane and Bob Pringle will return for the remake.

Thanks to The Twilight Saga, werewolf movies are making a comeback. The second installment, New Moon, raked in piles of money opening weekend, drawing wolfpack fans along with those of vampires.
In February, Universal's Wolfman arrives, in which Benicio Del Toro contends with the ancient curse. And now Variety has the news that The Howling, the 1981 werewolf movie by Joe Dante that generated a series of six sequels, is set for a franchise reboot with The Howling: Reborn.
The original starred Dee Wallace-Stone as a news anchor stalked by a serial killer, who turns out to be a werewolf. The plot details of the reboot are being kept tightly under wraps for now, but production is already set to start in February for a Halloween release. There's no word yet on whether they'll still use Gary Brandner's original novel as source material.

"The Howling" is set to terrorize theaters again! Independent film producers Joel Kastelberg and Moonstone Entertainment's Etchie Stroh are re-booting the franchise as "The Howling: Reborn."
Variety told us that former studio marketing exec Joe Nimziki, who worked at New Line, MGM and Sony, will make his feature directorial debut from his own script.
With all the "Twilight Saga: New Moon" mania going on, you know this is bound to happen.
I love the original film. John Sayles wrote the script and Joe Dante directed the 1981 flick. Dee Wallace-Stone played an anchorwoman being stalked by a serial killer who later turns out to be a werewolf...tan dan dan...
Production is set to begin in February for a Halloween release. No word on plot yet, but for now, let's relive the original. Take a look at the trailer of the 1981 horror flick:

I'm not so sure if I buy this one, but Corona Coming Attractions is reporting that a remake of The Howling is on the way. According to the article, indie producers Joel Kastelberg and Etchie Stroh are set to produce, and marketing guy Joe Nimziki will direct. They'll be working under the title The Howling: Reborn.
I don't exactly trust this because of a teaser poster for the project that I saw on other horror sites during the Afm last month. Somebody took the DVD cover from the original film (as seen unmolested above) and added some guy's name to it in Photoshop. The whole things didn't look legitimate, to the point that I didn't even report on it. The Corona article states, wisely, that "The original Howling had three great things working for it: strong direction by Joe Dante (Gremlins, the upcoming thriller The Hole 3D), a tight, »

It appears as if our prayers have been answered friends, and werewolves will be following vampires in the great 'classic monsters rebirth' cycle of this century. Universal is hitting hard with The Wolf Man early next year, and there are remakes of An American Werewolf in London and An American Werewolf in Paris are being whispered about in the halls of Hollywood. The only potential downside to all of this is if the Twilight effect kicks in, and future werewolf movies are stripped of their grit and given a glossy, teen-targeted look. Insert the potentially problematic premise of The Howling: Reborn, announced today via Variety. Indie producers Joel Kastelberg and Etchie Stroh are setting up a remake of the 1981 Joe Dante film, which followed a news anchor being stalked by a killer who turns out to be a werewolf. This new film will follow more of a Gossip Girl meets Twilight, with »

Hot off the heels of The Twilight Saga: New Moon – which takes a vampire love story and adds a helping of werewolves – making an absolute killing at the box office this past weekend, out comes news that The Howling franchise is getting a reboot/remake. Yes, yet again Hollywood is turning their focus to an established entity and giving it do-over. Big surprise there…
The original Howling from 1981 was directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins) and written by John Sayles from a book by Gary Brandner. It was about a news anchor who is stalked by a serial killer who turns out to be a werewolf (naturally…). It’s not generally considered one of the best horror films of all time (6.5 rating on IMDb), but its film with a loyal cult following. It ended up spawning six sequels (didn’t just about every horror franchise from the 80s?), including one subtitled »

What a complete non-surprise! Now that New Moon is raking in the cash, and doing what very little it can for the werewolves of the world, the vamps are gearing up for some further sharp-toothed competition. Variety reports that The Howling will return to the big screen by the hands of indie producers Joel Kastelberg and Etchie Stroh under the name The Howling: Reborn. Since it's been over three years since we first heard rumors of a remake, my guess is that this is a whole new can of worms.
A former marketing executive for studios like MGM and New Line, Joe Nimziki wrote the script and will direct it when the feature starts shooting this February. Once that's all done, they're hoping to get this howler into theaters for Halloween. The plot is being kept under wraps, but the original followed a TV newswoman who goes on a »

A remake of the 1981 film The Howling has been announced days after the werewolf-filled Twilight Saga: New Moon scored the third largest opening weekend: Coincidence? We think not, considering that a former studio marketing exec, Joe Nimziki, is behind the movie. According to Variety, the plot of The Howling: Reborn is under wraps, but Nimziki will direct from a script he penned himself, with cameras rolling in February — right around the time that The Wolfman, starring Benicio Del Toro, hits theaters. Let us not forget that MTV is also developing a Teen Wolf series, Dimension Films has acquired the »

Joe Dante’s The Howling is a fun and really flawed film. It has a boatload of fans, but I think they’d be hard pressed to say it’s not really weak in some areas, limited by budget and ultimately overshadowed by its big brother, An American Werewolf in London.
This sort of film — the one that has a lot of potential that wasn’t fully realized — is the variety that I’m okay with Hollywood remaking. According to Variety, that’s exactly what producers Joel Kastelberg and Moonstone Entertainment’s Etchie Stroh are doing with The Howling: Reborn. The film is scheduled to begin shooting in February, with a release in Halloween of next year.
Details about the plot are being kept under wraps, so it’s currently unknown whether the remake will follow the reporter-being-stalked-by-serial-killer-werewolf track of the original film or one of its six sequels. »

Since we're now running out of vampire properties to adapt, it's time to start scraping the bottom of the barrel for the next best thing, werewolf movies. Now while some may turn out to be pretty awesome (The Wolfman), some, like this newly announced remake of The Howling, I presume, will not. The original Howling, directed by Joe Dante, followed a woman being stalked by a serial killer who ended up being a werewolf, and somehow this was a good enough concept to spawn Six sequels, not... »

Reconfirming what we reported here from the Afm last month, Variety has officially announced that indie producers Joel Kastelberg and Moonstone Entertainment's Etchie Stroh are re-launching the Howling werewolf franchise with The Howling: Reborn . Are monster movies back? Hot on the heels of The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Universal’s The Wolfman, Variety now reports 1980s horror classic The Howling is gearing up for a remake. Talk about striking whilst the iron’s hot! Filming starts in February for a Halloween release.
Joe Dante’s 1981 original (written by indie auteur John Sayles) was a wry, tongue-in-cheek venture with some super-creepy moments. The 2010 version is going under the title of The Howling: Reborn.
As is the rule of thumb in Hollywood, the franchise soon descended into a plethora of sequels with diminishing creativity. However if the new filmmakers (Dante and Sayles are not involved) stay true to the original and don’t CGI all the creature effects, The Howling: Reborn might be an interesting undertaking.
Could 2010 be the year of the wolf? It remains to be seen. The Wolfman, like a wounded monster, »

The horror franchise The Howling, which was first introduced in 1981 and spawned six sequels, is now being relaunched in a new film entitled The Howling: Reborn.
The original film was directed by Joe Dante and starred Dee Wallace-Stone as a news anchor stalked by a serial killer who turns out to be a werewolf, but so far all plot details for the new film are being kept under wraps.
Producers Joel Kastelberg and Etchie Stroh are reinventing the franchise and, according to Variety, former studio marketing executive Joe Nimziki will make his feature directorial debut on the film, working from his own script.
Steve Lane and Bob Pringle, who served as executive producers on the original, will also executive produce The Howling: Reborn.
The plan at the moment is for filming to begin in February next year in time for a Halloween release.

I have seen bad werewolf effects in New Moon and I have seen bad werewolf effects in the trailers for The Wolfman, and I have wondered why (or how) this particular school of wizardy has gone backward in the past 30 years. Yep, the standard is still Rick Baker's work in An American Werewolf in London. But that doesn't mean Hollywood won't keep trying, no matter how often or badly it fails.
And that's where The Howling comes into the picture. See, if there had been real progress in our werewolf technology, I'd be saying "Why not?" But we clearly haven't figured out a better way to bring The Howling back.
Incidentally, the original had plenty of good things going for it, not the least of which was a script by John Sayles (I know, right?) and it was directed by Joe Dante. Where the brand name got really off-track »

It seems that Joe Dante's The Howling is now up for remaking. Tonight we've learned that Joe Nimziki, a former studio marketing executive, will be making his feature film debut with The Howling: Reborn. Nimziki also wrote the script. The original Howling spawned a series of sequels that, from what I can remember, were pretty much all crap. Could this remake be any better? The original film was based upon a book of the same name by Gary Brandner, but apparently the film differed significantly. It starred Dee Wallace as a news reporter that has a traumatic encounter with a serial killer who turns out to be a werewolf. (I too hate it when that happens.) There's little else to go on with this project. We know that the studio behind the film is aiming to start production in February for a Haloween release, but I'm not even »

The 1981 werewolf movie The Howling is getting a second shot to find an audience. A remake is in the planning stages and tentatively scheduled to go in front of cameras next February. It could even be out in theaters by Halloween 2010.
Two movie producers known for their indie films are responsible for shepherding this new Howling. They are Joel Kastelberg and Etchie Stroh and they've got a director by the name of Joe Nimziki who used to work as a marketing executive for studios. He's written a screenplay called The Howling: Reborn, which is very appropriate since the six Howling sequels that followed the original not only stunk up the franchise, I would dare say that an entirely new stinky odor was created.
The original Howling had three great things working for it: strong direction by Joe Dante (Gremlins, the upcoming thriller The Hole 3D), a tight, serious script »

Following New Moon’s entirely predictable success at the box office - in case you haven’t heard, it grossed $140.7 million this weekend, making it the third highest grossing opening of all time - it appears that werewolves could be making a comeback. The Wolfman’s been ready to attack for a while, and now marketing exec Joe Nimziki is turning auteur to bring us a Howling reboot. Nimziki will be directing his own script, which may or may not follow the plot of the original. Joe Dante’s Howling...
