MattFini's Halloween Top 10 Lists: Top 10 Gialli

30 October 2009 5:36 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Yesterday’s list of overlooked slasher flicks got me thinking about their European cousin, the giallo. Sure, most gialli were cranked out before the slasher craze was under way, but it’s hard to ignore the similarities: knife-wielding, black-gloved lunatics, tragic prologues often used establish our killer’s motivations and, of course, excessive female exploitation. In short: total bliss!

I’ve limited this list to one film per director so to prevent my own personal bias from creeping into it. But, really, there’s so many of these damn things I didn’t think it’d be fair to turn this into a showcase for just two or three directors. Next to the slasher, the giallo is my favorite subgenre. Drive-In Super Monster-Rama and “Brew & View” fright shows

31 July 2009 3:39 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

If you’re in Pennsylvania or nearby and want to relive the vintage experience of watching fright flicks in your car under the night sky, head over to Vandergrift, Pa Friday-Saturday, September 11-12 for the Drive-In Super Monster-Rama. This event, sponsored by DVD Drive-In and taking place at the Riverside Drive In Theatre (Route 66 N), opens its doors at 7 p.m. each night and starts the big-screen at dusk.

British terror is the theme for both quadruple features; Friday night offers Witchfinder General (a.k.a. The Conqueror Worm), Scream And Scream Again, The Crimson Cult and Terror Creatures From The Grave. Saturday is an all-Hammer Horror presentation including The Vampire Lovers, The 7 Brothers Meet Dracula, The Satanic Rites Of Dracula and Vampire Circus. All the flicks will be presented in 35mm prints, accompanied by trailers, cartoons and short subjects, with all sorts of food and drink available at the concession stand. »
