With Oscar buzz for his performance in 'Moon' and 'Iron Man 2' on the way, Rockwell has a lot to be thankful for.

Was there a more inventive performance in 2009 than Sam Rockwell's in "Moon"? Or, we should say, the performances of the many, many Sam Rockwells who show up in this sci-fi mind-bender about outer space, isolation and technology? The actor took a risk with first-time director Duncan Jones and the gamble paid off big time: The movie was one of the coolest of the year and Rockwell has rightly been mentioned as a potential Oscar candidate.
So MTV News must express our gratitude during this week in which we are giving thanks to the best films and brightest performances of the year. But when it comes to Rockwell, we're also thankful for a movie we haven't seen yet: "Iron Man 2, »

Mischa, Marty and Rachel
1897 Frank Fay, aka Mr. Barbara Stanwyck. The theory goes that their troubled marriage was the basis of A Star is Born. That story is so big it's practically it's own franchise. I can't stop thinking about it today: Stanwyck through the lens of Gaynor, Garland, Streisand. Yummy!) Even if it's only an urban La legend, I love to think about it. Fay, a popular comedic actor, was also the originator of the Harvey role (on stage) before Jimmy Stewart got to it.
1901 Lee Strasberg, the hugely influential acting teacher that helped popularize "The Method" Students included... well, basically a whose who of late 40s / early 50s giants of the silver screen.

Way back in May, we gave actor Sam Rockwell one of his first looks at Justin Hammer, his "Iron Man 2" character, when we gave him an issue of the comic book during an interview that occurred a few months after he was cast in the blockbuster sequel. When MTV Movies Editor Josh Horowitz recently sat down with Rockwell, he was able to offer us a bit more info about his character—specifically, his relationship with Don Cheadle's character, James "Rhodey" Rhodes.
He also revealed what sort of research he did after that earlier meeting and where he drew his inspiration for Tony Stark's rival.
"I got some research—they sent me over some stuff," Rockwell told MTV News. "I looked it over and that was about it."
"I kind of took my own ideas from other things," he added. "A little bit of Lex Luthor stuff—[Kevin] Spacey and [Gene] Hackman. »

Click above for more stills The 11th Mumbai Film Festival (Mff), organized by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (Mami) began last night in the city with the opening ceremony held at Fun Cinema, Andheri. It was a night to remember with the who's who of world and Indian cinema gracing the event with their presence. The festival was inaugurated by the Information and Broadcasting Minister. Ambika Soni. A visibly impressed Mrs. Soni said, "Indian Cinema has made significant contribution to the nation's growth rate. The film industry's concerns are the concerns of my ministry." Once the action moved from the red carpet to inside the venue, the crowd was pleasantly surprised to see that the emcees for the night were the two whiz kids of Bollywood, Farhan Akhtar and Karan Johar, who were both at their enthralling best. Farhan invited the Chairman of Mami, Shyam Benegal who gave the welcome speech. »

On paper, the idea of Paul Schrader leaving Hollywood for Bollywood shouldn't work. Schrader's had a hand in some of the most iconic American films of the last century -- he scripted Taxi Driver and The Last Temptation of Christ and directed films like American Gigolo and Affliction -- and the dark themes that have long fascinated him would seem a mismatch for the joyous, colorful world of Indian cinema. And yet, that's exactly what makes the concept so immediately compelling; like Steven Soderbergh's planned Cleopatra musical, the idea of Paul Schrader directing a Bollywood musical is simply too bold to ignore.
After reading the announcement of the project (titled Xtrme City) in Variety this week, I called up Schrader to learn just what he has in mind. "I've made a career out of doing oddball films that have a very niche market," he admitted to me, right off the bat. »

Sharon Stone and Chris Evans have signed on to star in Satisfaction, a drama about a male prostitute and the older lady who looks after him. How do we know this? Because Stone herself blabbed about it to Prestige magazine (sadly, not an offshoot of Dale Doback and Brennan Huff’s Prestige Worldwide).Evans will play a gigolo who becomes involved with an older lady, all while going through a traumatic relationship with his agency. Stone, we’re guessing, will play the older lady.“You think they have legitimately fallen in love, by his behaviour and her behaviour,” Stone told Prestige, “until the call-out service starts sending him out again while he's with her. He starts trying to break her down. And it's incredible what they do together: a very, very fascinating journey."So, is it an opposite-sex Midnight Cowboy for the Noughties? A riff on The Graduate? A new spin on American Gigolo? »

Ashton Kutcher is proud of his "schwantz." The U.S. actor - who stars as a serial seducer of rich women in his latest movie "Spread" - is happy for any of his colleagues to see his appendage, but did starve himself so his stomach would be flat for the film.
He said: "Once you do the first nude scene and the whole crew has seen your schwantz then you're fine."
"I didn't have to worry about diet. Pretty much I generally take on whatever is the abusive diet of my character. This guy pretty much didn't eat much, so he had this body."
Ashton deliberately set out to find a part where he could play a rogue akin to Warren Beatty in "Shampoo" or Richard Gere in "American Gigolo" and sought out the former to ask his advice.

Post the success of Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, Mumbai better brace itself for another slum saga from Hollywood. Paul Schrader is on the verge of finalizing his script for Extreme City which will be shot in and around the slums of Dharavi. Back from a hush-hush meeting with the director, producer Anubhav Sinha says, "I can't deny there's tremendous interest in another Mumbai slum saga after Slumdog Millionaire. But our project was firmed in much before Danny's film released." After Danny Boyle's dark and passionate look at Mumbai in Slumdog Millionaire, it's American super-director Paul Schrader's turn to do a hardcore Mumbai film, this one for an Indian producer Anubhav Sinha. In what's arguably the biggest collaboration ever between Bollywood and Hollywood, American writer-director Paul Schrader sneaked into Mumbai in July and met up with producer-director Anubhav Sinha for a Mumbai-based underworld drama called Extreme City. (Elliott Gould, above, as Philip Marlowe in The Long Goodbye.)
by Jon Zelazny
Editor’s note: this article originally appeared at EightMillionStories.com on November 14, 2008.
With the back-to-back success of his Oscar-nominated role in the off-beat wife-swapping hit Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969) and the even bigger off-beat hit Mash (1970), Brooklyn’s own Elliott Gould skyrocketed to worldwide fame.
While perhaps best known to those under 40 as Ross and Monica’s dad on “Friends,” or Vegas financier Reuben Tishkoff in the blockbuster Ocean’s 11 series, cine-scholars generally regard Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye (1973) as Gould’s most iconic starring role. 2008 marks the 35th anniversary of their extraordinary modern-day reinterpretation of Raymond Chandler’s classic private eye, Philip Marlowe.
Elliott Gould invited me to his home in west Los Angeles, where he generously spoke at length of his three major collaborations with Altman, who passed away two years ago.
