When I first heard that Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Haute Tension) was writing and directing a remake of the classic 70’s Joe Dante film Piranha, I thought “Hmmm. This could be a good thing.” Then I read that he was doing it in 3D and I thought “Dang! I thought this could be a good thing; guess I was wrong.”
The remake, cleverly titled Piranha 3D, is set in the fictional location of Lake Victoria during spring break (think Lake Havasu), and after a underwater earthquake releases a prehistoric flesh-eating fish, “an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area’s new razor-toothed residents.” Sherriff Julie Forester must risk all that she loves and knows to destroy the piranha “save the lake and her family from totally being devoured.”
Piranha 3D stars Elizabeth Shue as Sherriff Julie Forester, along with Steve R. »

Riley Steele is best know for her work in adult films like Pirates 2: Stagnetti's Revenge, but the gorgeous twenty-two-year-old may soon win a bunch of new fans, and some mainstream success, with her supporting role in Alexandre Aja's upcoming 3-D remake of Joe Dante's cult classic Piranha. I met Steele on the Lake Havasu, Arizona set of Piranha this summer, on a day when she was filming her climactic scene – and swallowing a lot of water in the process. Needless to say she wasn't feeling very good that day. Being a trooper, however, she offered to chat with me later on the phone. Read on for the conversation that followed, in which Steele discusses making the transition from adult film star to... »

As the spookiest day of the year (Halloween) approaches, people start talking about what actually scares them the most. We’ve run several articles this month discussing horror films from multiple genres (Comedy, Sci-Fi, Thriller) and then we covered a list of “fun for everyone” Halloween films.
In too many instances people focus on the alien, zombie, ghost and slasher films to represent the horror genre - and while those are all truly frightening topics for films, I think that ultimately one of the scariest horror sub-genres often gets overlooked: Animals gone crazy!
Whether it’s by land, sea or air, creatures of every imaginable size and shape have terrorized us for decades. Some are exotic animals, others are extinct beasts brought back to life by the magic of Hollywood, while still others hit closer to home and make us question if we should even own a pet. Come join »

We recently published Glenn Kay's interview with Joe Dante discussing the full details on his upcoming film The Hole (read it here). Now, Jason Anders caught up with the director to go back even further. All the way back to 1978, and the recently remade Piranha...
Jason Anders/Fangoria: Let's start with one of your earliest films, 1978's Piranha; what originally inspired you to become involved in filmmaking, and what roads led to you directing one of your first motion pictures, which garnered the respect of major Hollywood names like Steven Spielberg? Also, tell me about the challenges you faced on the production of this film, which was shot in just 30 days.
Joe Dante: I had originally planned to become a cartoonist; it was only during art school that I came to realize I was more inclined toward filmmaking. This was the mid-'60s when the idea of "film school »

Back when most of my friends were geeking out over their Mike Schmidt baseball cards or Spider-Man comic books, I was cataloging my own list of favorites. Sure, me and all my neighborhood friends loved baseball, comic books, and video games, but I'm pretty sure I was the only one who knew that Cujo and Cat's Eye were directed by the same guy; that the guy who directed Red Dawn also did Conan the Barbarian; and that Joe Dante was the man to thank for Piranha, The Howling, Gremlins, Explorers, and Innerspace. Obviously none of my pals really cared about this stuff, which is why they're all bankers and doctors whereas I'm a film critic and, um, the manager of a movie blog. It was with no small dose of enthusiasm... »

Some shocking news came out of the Tiff screening of The Hole 3D when a fan asked Joe Dante why he didn't direct Dimension's Piranha 3D remake. Dancing off of the idiotic question, Dante somehow flipped the conversation onto the way Alex Aja filmed it, revealing that it's not actually shot in 3D. The iconic director, whose film The Hole was shot on set in 3D, explained that Aja filmed the remake with one camera and will be digitally making it 3D in post, while adding CGI piranha that will be "Pixar-like 3D." How does that make you feel? Kinda hurts, doesn't it? I guess we'll see how good 2D-turned-3D looks come April 16, 2010. Elisabeth Shue, Adam Scott, Ving Rhames, Richard Dreyfuss, Dina Meyer, Brooklynn Proulx, Quinn Lord, Riley Steele, Jessica Szohr, Jerry O'Connell, Paul Scheer, Cody Longo, Riley Steele, Eli Roth, Ricardo Chavira all star. »

This is some pleasant news coming from the New York Times. Independent filmmaker Roger Corman will receive a honoree Oscar award at the Governor Award's dinner, scheduled for November 14th. The honorees were chosen for the Oscar by the Academy of Motion Picture Art and Science and were selected this past Thursday. Corman is an all time low-budget film maker and producer. Through his 50 plus year career, he has generated most of what us from HorrorYearbook believe to be classics of the genre we so very love. He directed Jack Nicholson in his first horror role of The Little Shop of Horrors, adapted Edgar Allan Poe's short story the Pit and The Pendulum with Vincent Price and brought us his version of the unspeakable automaton in Frankenstein Unbound! He has produced many cult classics that me and my fellow HorrorYearbookians own such as Piranha, The Big Doll House, Humanoids of the Deep, »

Debbie Rochon, often described as a scream queen herself, wrote in an article originally published in Gc Magazine that "a true Scream Queen isn't The Perfect Woman. She's sexy, seductive, but most importantly 'attainable' to the average guy. Or so it would seem." Nastassja Kinski Films: To the Devil a Daughter (1976) [1] Cat People (1982) [2] The Day the World Ended (2001) [3] Inland Empire (2006) [4] Kinski will always be remembered for the iconic photograph shot by Richard Avedon (with a snake coiled around her body) and her role in Paul Schrader's (not so good) remake of Cat People. Needless to say, it was a hit at the box office and Kinski deservingly received a Saturn Award for Best Actress. Caroline Munro Films: The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) [5] Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972) [6] Dracula A.D. 1972 [7] Maniac (1980) [8] Faceless (1987) [9] Demons 6 (1989) [10] Caroline Munro seduced audiences in her Hammer roles in films like Dracula A.D. 1972, but for gore hounds, »

"There Are Some Places In The Universe You Don't Go Alone."
So said the tag line advertising the main feature at London's Odeon Leicester Square in August 1986. The film on show was Aliens, the eagerly anticipated sequel to the 1979 sci-fi horror movie Alien. Fans of the first film had waited a long time to see what new horrors would be inflicted on Alien's heroine, Ellen Ripley, and her beloved cat. Some feared the cat might be the unfortunate host of writer and director James Cameron's new generation of stomach-bursting beasts. The young Canadian director was keeping the truth close to his chest, though.
Despite the secrecy, moviegoers and critics were optimistic that they would get something good from the man who had thrilled them with The Terminator. As one of them, I went to the Odeon Leicester Square to see Aliens one week after it went on general »

No, The Hole isn't a new porno, it's a creepy new thriller from director Joe Dante, the man who brought us Gremlins and Piranha and other great movies. ShockTillYouDrop has unveiled our first high res look at the poster from the movie featuring the "hole" in the basement in which all the "bad guys" come from. Much like Small Soldiers, one of Dante's other past movies, The Hole is actually made for the younger teenage demographic, but it's still creepy. I got to see an early trailer at Comic-Con and it looks okay, not anything amazing, but just because it's Joe Dante, I'm mildly excited for it. Anyway, check the poster out below! The Hole, filmed in 3-D, centers on Susan (Teri Polo), a mother who moves with her teen sons to a rural house where the three are forced to face their fears after discovering a bottomless hole in »

Fangoria got a handful of gory images from the set of Alex Aja's upcoming Piranha 3D! You can click the teaser image below to see several more examples of Knb's kick-ass work on the film over on Fango's site:
Piranha 3D stars Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O'Connell, Jessica Szohr, Christopher Lloyd, Richard Dreyfuss, Ving Rhames, Adam Scott and Dina Meyer (Saw 1-3). Loosely based on the original Piranha directed by Joe Dante, Aja's version was penned by Aja and his writing partner Grégory Levasseur and is due out next year.
Synopsis: They’re back! Every year the population of sleepy Lake Havasu explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for a single, wild weekend - the 4th of July, a riot of sun, drunken fun and sex-crazed mayhem. But this year, there's something more to worry about than hangovers and complaints from local old timers. Havasu sits in the crater formed by a prehistoric volcanic eruption, »

Anyone familiar with Alexandre Aja's films might have been a bit surprised when he was announced as the director of Piranha 3D. Could the horror auteur – whose dramatically visceral style was celebrated in films like High Tension and The Hills Have Eyes remake – reimagine Joe Dante's campy debut fright film (which Dante himself has acknowledged as a Jaws rip-off) into something that would entertain a generation of filmgoers accustomed to no-nonsense, high-impact shocks? I decided to see for myself, and drove out to the Lake Havasu set of Aja's new film to join a few lucky journalists in speaking with the director and his cast and crew. I'll be running this coverage in... »

Lake Havasu, Arizona — Conventional wisdom says that if you want to watch a great artistic achievement, you look to accomplished filmmakers. If you just want to have a good time and eat some popcorn, you choose something loud, gory and unapologetically exploitative. But somewhere in the middle are the "Piranha" films — and when we recently visited the set of the franchise reboot, we found a unique mix of blood, babes and bona-fide actors.
"The movie is going to be insane, because as much blood as it has, it has the equal amount of boobies," grinned Paul Scheer, the "Human Giant" funnyman who stars in "Piranha 3-D" alongside a huge cast that includes Elisabeth Shue, Richard Dreyfuss (in a nod to his "Jaws" role), Christopher Lloyd, »

For me, horror movies will always be fondly, profoundly linked to the sweet, wonderful and wide eyed rapture of my late-night trash TV-drenched childhood. Those bygone, misspent hours when I’d subject myself to every manner of sublime cinema, splitting open fantastic and macabre realities that potentially could and in some cases did, exist. One of the too-many-to-count strange shockers that left a major, destiny altering impact on me was veteran small screen director Sutton Roley’s obscure Sci-Fi tinged skin crawler Chosen Survivors, a movie whose chilly, nihilistic, future-shock premise hooked my Twilight Zone weaned sensibilities while also managing to exploit my acute fear of bedroom invading bats.
Before we proceed, let me explain a bit about that fear…
See, there was this one time when I was no more than 8, I was reading a particularly upsetting issue of Marvel comics’ groundbreaking Tomb Of Dracula series, alone, in my »

Here's the latest remake news about "Piranha," "Halloween 2" and the just announced "Brideof Frankenstein." With their redo of "Wolfman" already creating some buzz, Universal is planning a remake of the '30s James Whale classic "The Bride of Frankenstein." ... Keeping the spirit of Joe Dante's original, Alex Aja's 3D remake of "Piranha" will have cameos. Or at least one cameo. "Hostel" director Eli Roth is set to appear super briefly in the film as the host of a wet T-shirt contest. ... Meanwhile, here's an image of Sherriff Brackett from Rob Zombie's "Halloween 2" remake/sequel: "Halloween 2" will be going head to head with "The Final Destination" on August 28.. »

At the outset of production, director Alexandre Aja was on the lookout for hot bodies to populate Piranha 3D , his remake of Joe Dante's camp classic. He certainly found one in porn starlet, and Digital Playground contract girl, Riley Steele. The actress called in to ShockTillYouDrop.com from the film's Arizona location to give this writer the lowdown on her character Crystal. "She's a girl who's out to have fun," Steele says. And she means that quite literally, Crystal is one of the stars of the film's Wild, Wild Girls , a spin on Girls Gone Wild . "Me and Danni [Kelly Brook] go out and basically trying to get innocent Kelly [Jessica Szohr] to become a Wild, Wild Girl with me. So, I'm basically playing myself." Steele's untamed lifestyle... »

Part 1 of 3 Terminator Franchise Retrospective.
Spoilers abound but you've had 25 years to see this picture...
"Tech Noir"
In March of 1984 when The Terminator began filming, the director James Cameron and the producer Gale Ann Hurd were no Hollywood heavyweights. Cameron was no one's idea of a visionary (except for perhaps his own) and had only one feature under his belt, Piranha 2: The Spawning -- auspicious beginnings! Hurd had learned the production ropes on B movies for Roger Corman. Cameron and Hurd intended for the dark, fast and cheaply made robot movie to be their calling card. Seven months later in October the movie premiered with only its deceptively simple premise (killer machine hunts woman) and Conan the Barbarian (Arnold Schwarzenegger) to sell it. The Terminator was an immediate hit, though not quite a blockbuster. It earned a Conan-like $38 million gross in its initial run (which I believe is something »

Sorry about the sensationalist title, but we couldn't resist it. Porn star Riley Steele has been added to the cast of Piranha 3D and we figure that being a porn star in a piranha movie is the next best thing to wearing a red shirt in Star Trek. The staff at CinemaSpy suspect she's going to be fish fodder, not least because her contribution to the movie has been described thus by the film's producer Mark Canton:
"It's crystal clear that Riley Steele adds yet another dimension to Piranha 3-D. Her natural beauty will light up the screen as she frolics with the hordes of spring break partygoers in our very contemporary, scary 3-D movie."
Anyone whose contribution to a film is described as "frollicking" should be concerned about their character's longevity. Perhaps not Ms. Steele, though. According to Samantha Lewis, CEO of Steele's employer, the adult filmmaking company Digital Playground, »
