Extraordinarily popular in Australia during the late 70s and early 80s, where it dominated the 7pm timeslot, The Sullivans also found a market in Britain a decade later where it was purchased as a daytime filler. Ostensibly about Australian life during World War II, it focussed on the Sullivans, their extended family, neighbours and friends as they underwent the many changes and concerns brought about by the war. The mix of characters was effective: morally upright father Dave, caring matriach Grace, three sons of differing personalities, and carefree daughter Kitty. The regular cast was professional and subtle enough not to overdo their roles, while the 'guests' came and went, so much so that the series became something of a proving ground for Australian talent like Mel Gibson and Kylie Minogue.
As well as the cast, it was the adherence to realism that helped make the show such a success. The production team went to all sorts of trouble to create a seamless period drama: the corner shop was fitted out immaculately with 1940s brands, the Sullivan home had its own air-raid shelter and no 'phone, even the informal discussion of football or cricket scores contained the actual scores from that time (episodes contained date overlays). The realism extended to the dialogue, which was casual and measured, and the storylines, which didn't test the boundaries of belief. However a follow-up telemovie, The John Sullivan Story, had the eldest son surviving shipwreck, battle, torture and romantic torment, before hitchhiking his way to London - here Grace, who had travelled there to nurse him back to health (yeah, I'm sure hundreds of Australian civvies went on English holidays during WWII!) met a grisly end after having a German doodlebug fall on her.
The Sullivans was one of the few Australian series that provided prolonged, high-quality drama that was both critically and popularly acclaimed. It's landmark Australian television which will undoubtedly be re-aired many times in years to come.
