This is one of the earlier Columbo segments, and perhaps one of the better ones at that as Robert Culp guests stars as Mr. Brimmer, who's the head of an investigation firm. Seems that he attempts to blackmail the spouse of a very wealthy and powerful newspaper tycoon; it turns out the wife was having an affair with the local golf instructor and Brimmer decides to cover it up, but with a price. When said price isn't met, murder is committed and Columbo is on the case, dealing with the tycoon(Ray Milland)and Brimmer, who was hired by the tycoon! Talk about a complicated mess that Columbo must sort through. Without divulging too much, both Culp and Milland give solid performances, especially Culp's Brimmer, who does what he can to outwit the detective. Columbo is even offered a position in the "growing organization" to divert him off the case, and I always wonder if that's the case of does Brimmer respect Columbo's thinking brain? It adds to a solid episode.
To this reviewer, a fault that bothered me was Brimmer showing his ring to Columbo a few times. You'd think a very smart ex-cop wouldn't be so cocky as to show his cards when it's revealed the killer was left handed and the victim was struck with a ring, yet Brimmer leaves himself wide open to question. Otherwise, this is one of the better episodes guest starring one of the better villains in Robert Culp.
