Broadly speaking, yes. Robert Bolt won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay - the adaptation coming from the play of the same name which he wrote. Bolt was a serious playwright and his research was impeccable. There are certain differences between the stage play and the film but nothing which detracts from truth. (There was no Chief Judge in reality - the court investigation was run by the Duke of Norfolk).

I often describe this film as the 'antidote' to films like 'Braveheart' where a perfectly good story is mangled and embellished to make it even more spectacular. Mel Gibson is no Robert Bolt.
