Joshua Jackson has come quite a ways from The Mighty Ducks teammate and "Dawson's Creek" second fiddle -- now he's in charge of battling extraterrestrials. Jackson (so great on TV's "Fringe") will star in UFO, the adaptation of the 1970s cult Brit show. The live-action series from puppeteer Gerry Anderson ("Thunderbirds", "Fireball XL5") followed a secret high-tech organization called Shado (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization, of course)... »

Joshua Jackson ("Dawson's Creek", "Fringe") will star in a new film adaptation of the cult 70's British sci-fi TV series "UFO" reports Variety. Jackson will star as Paul Foster, a test pilot who joins S.H.A.D.O. (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization), a covert organization built under a Hollywood studio that defends Earth against a race of aliens who have been abducting humans and using the body parts. Famed for his marionette shows like "Thunderbirds" and "Captain Scarlett", Gerry Anderson turned to live-action with the original "UFO" which ran for a single season of twenty-six episodes from 1970 to 1971. A second series was initially commissioned but later cancelled, with much of the development work done on it incorporated into Anderson's more well-known mid-late 70's... »

British Television Fav UFO Returns

23 November 2009 9:49 AM, PST | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Being old and Canadian, I was treated in my post larvae stage to some fine 70’s British Sci-Fi television. Nobody did great Sci-Fi with no money like the Brits. Coming soon to a theatre near you will be a remake of the wicked “UFO”, where aliens once again invade, but this time, instead of stopping at mere subjugation and tyranny, the Aliens (that’s all they were called) used us for our tender fleshy inner bits. “UFO” was created by the same team that dropped the geektastic Stingray, Thunderbirds, and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Gerry Anderson and Sylvia Anderson. Oh those were the days. This new version will star Joshua Jackson, now experienced in the Sci-Fi thanks to “Fringe” and will be helmed by Matthew Gratzner. Joshua will play Paul Foster, a test pilot that joins Shado, an organization that pretends to be a movie studio but instead is »

Visual effects guru to command UFO film adaptation

30 July 2009 1:34 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

One Of The kitsch classics of 70s sci-fi is to be revived and adapted into a Hollywood feature film.

British TV series UFO, which aired in 1970 and 1971, is fondly remembered for lead character Commander Ed Straker (pictured left), played by the late Ed Bishop, who bleached his hair for the first few episodes but then ended up wearing a white wig.

You may also recall the female crew on Moonbase - including actress Gabrielle Drake (pictured above) - with their purple bobbed hairdos, dramatic eye make-up and silver jumpsuits. Their commander was the glamorous Colonel Virginia Lake (pictured below), played by Wanda Ventham.

Now, nearly four decades later, the show - created by sci-fi veterans Gerry and Sylvia Anderson - is to be navigated on to the big screen by visual effects guru Matthew Gratzner, in his directorial debut, reports Variety.

11 July 2009 4:51 AM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Thunderbirds creator Gerry Anderson has claimed that ITV is blocking his plans to resurrect the show. The 80-year-old TV producer is believed to have been in negotiations with the broadcaster, which owns the rights to the programme, for more than three years - but none of the talks have come to fruition. "It's madness. Everyone loves Thunderbirds - the bloody audience is out there waiting," Anderson told the Daily Mail. "What the hell is the matter with these people that they won't let me make it? "It's beyond my understanding. Is it ageism? I even said I'd raise the money myself, for God's sake. I don't want you to think I'm over-emotional, (more) »

Gerry Anderson Reacts to 'UFO' Movie

8 June 2009 9:30 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Back on May 25, we reported that uber-producer Robert Evans is teaming up with British network ITV to bring the 1970 cult classic UFO to the big screen. In the meantime, the show's creator, Gerry Anderson, has chimed in about the project with surprising hopefulness.

Speaking with Den of Geek, Anderson acknowledged he had been contacted by the new film's American producers and that he has high hopes that this may result in him having a role in the film's production (though clearly he will at least receive a 'Created by' credit):

"I got a call from somebody in America," Anderson said. "It was very kind actually—they phoned to say, 'Gerry, listen, there's an announcement going out now [about the new movie] and we didn't want it to come as a shock to you', which was a kind move. As a result of that I had a long chat with them. It wouldn't help »
