Former American Idol contestant Syesha Mercado may be the biggest known name in the revival of Dreamgirls that kicked off its national tour at Harlem's famed Apollo Theatre this week, but it's an unknown named Moya Angela who's generating all the buzz as Effie "I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" White, according to EW's Tanner Stransky. Also this week, the booty-shaking biographical Afrobeat musical Fela! (pictured at left) opened on Broadway to widespread raves (including a B+ from EW), while a fine cast headed by a lifeless Matthew Broderick struggled in director/playwright Kenneth Lonergan's disappointing new Off Broadway comic drama, »

Every Sunday, Film School Rejects presents a film that was made before you were born and tells you why you should like it. This week, Old Ass Movies presents: White Christmas (1954) While walking through a major store the other day, I noticed that all of their Christmas gear had already been broken out, and I felt that that sent a central message to shoppers that Thanksgiving is easily overlooked. The hell with Thanksgiving. Bring on Christmas. I've decided to join in the exclusionary spirit, completely bypassing Thanksgiving (as if my entries seem themed in the first place), and go straight to the source of holiday cheer that is the only holiday that can leave the streets and highways of Los Angeles empty. And what better way than to spotlight White Christmas? I recognize that for some modern audiences, this film will seem completely dated. It's one of those films that was birthed from the stage show, from »

It was a busy week on the boards. Sunday saw the opening of a Broadway revival of the musical Ragtime (pictured right), which EW's Melissa Rose Bernardo calls "dazzling" and gives an A. Also on Broadway, Sarah Ruhl's provocatively titled comic play In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play opened to a decidedly lukewarm review from yours truly: "Ruhl's play could have benefited from a broader, farcical touch." Elsewhere on Broadway, the Julia Stiles-Bill Pullman revival of David Mamet's Oleanna announced plans to close on Jan. 3. Off Broadway, we raved about both Alan Ayckbourn's My »

This week I'm on time and have more than just one movie to discuss as I finally finished watching both Terrence Malick and Paul Weitz's filmography, caught another Christmas film I had not seen and refreshed my memory on a Spielberg sci-fi.
As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. I now have 51 friends on the movie rental site and would love to have a few more if those of you out there with accounts are interested. Now, here's the recap of my week in movies...
A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) Quick Thoughts: For no real reason whatsoever other than the fact this film had landed on my radar over the past few months, I finally decided to watch A.I. since first watching it back in 2001. I remember not being blown away after seeing it the first time and again I wasn't bowled over, but »

When I interviewed Berke Breathed a few years back, I asked him if there would finally by a comprehensive Bloom County collection like the recently available Calvin & Hobbes and Peanuts volumes. Breathed was dismissive of the idea, claiming that no one wanted to read the strip, that it was no longer relevant, and it just wasn’t going to happen. Well, a few years have gone by, »

The classic 1944 film Meet Me in St. Louis directed by Vincente Minnelli is so revered that to imagine a stage version of equal prominence is... Well, Musical Theatre West's (Mtw) impressive reproduction of the 1989 Broadway version is so charmingly rendered, that one forgets the movie, Judy Garland, Margaret O'Brien & company... at least for 2 hours. Not unlike White Christmas on stage, Meet Me in St. Louis captivates its audience with mesmerizing production values and an astounding ensemble. »

Before we get into this week's releases I thought I would alert you to an upcoming 50% off Criterion Collection titles at Barnes and Nobles beginning on November 10 and running for two weeks. The full details, and a $5 off coupon, can be found in the DVD Talk forums.
Wings of Desire (Criterion Collection) This is a huge week for major title releases on Blu-ray as Criterion's release of Wim Wenders's Wings of Desire is just the first of three titles I reviewed and most likely blew my word count for the next two weeks trying to get all of my thoughts squared away.
As for this title specifically, it was my first time seeing it and as it played on and on I began to enjoy it more and more. However, if you read my lengthy review, you will »

Joliet, Il - Dan Aykroyd is on a mission from vodka. The Blues Brother is cruising around the country in a Damnation Alley Rv promoting his Crystal Skull premium vodka. He rolled into my town and I was compelled to see the man.
He was appearing at a liquor store on a Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. What sort of crowd could he draw? I showed up at 1 p.m. with my four month old designated driver. There was already 400 people in line. Another 300 people end up behind us. Luckily Dan’s traveling partner announced that even though Dan was schedule to leave at 4:30, he’d be signing his bottles until the last person went home happy.
Why not? Each bottle cost $50. I’ve been told that there’s only two types of vodka in the world: Good vodka and vodka that makes you go blind and piss blood. »

We have a brand new exclusive special feature clip from the brand new anniversary edition of White Christmas, which will be released on DVD on November 3. Click below to take a look at our exclusive special feature clip, which deals with Bing Crosby taking the time to sing for American soldiers.
White Christmas, Paramount's belated follow-up to the 1942 hit Holiday Inn, was the studio's first VistaVision production. A veritable warehouse full of oldie-but-goodie Irving Berlin tunes are woven into the film's simplistic plotline, along with a handful of new songs, of which &"What Can You Do With a General?" is the least memorable. Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye (replacing an ailing Donald O'Connor) play nightclub entertainers Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, while Rosemary Clooney and VeraEllen are cast as singing-sister act Betty and Judy. The foursome travel to Vermont to visit Bob and Phil's Wii commanding officer, General Waverly (Dean Jagger, »

I wasn't quite sure how to properly word the headline for this post considering I want to make sure you understand I am talking about the season pretty much running from Thanksgiving to Christmas, but I also want to make sure you know the film itself doesn't have to necessarily be about the holidays.
Take Die Hard for instance, it's set during Christmas time, but it isn't a Christmas film. However, it fits in with what I am looking for here. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Eyes Wide Shut, Fanny and Alexander, Batman Returns, Gremlins, The Thin Man and When Harry Met Sally are other examples. Hell, I would even say Rocky IV and Lethal Weapon count. As a matter of fact, I would say the non-Christmas, Christmas movies are the more interesting additions. How about The Shining or even Psycho?
Then, of course, I personally love films such as Love, »

1) Don't crucify me, but sometimes it takes a Jew to make truly great Christmas music. Irving Berlin wrote "White Christmas" poolside at the Arizona Biltmore, and let's not forget about the classic A Christmas Gift For You by Phil Spector who won't be poolside anytime soon. This phenomenon is only fitting, really, since Jesus was a visionary himself and arguably the original nice Jewish boy. 2) Bob Dylan and Neil Diamond are my first two heroes who made me want to be a writer in the first place, so you're only reading these words for free right now because of them. Sure, Barry Manilow came into my life a little later, but he has gainfully employed me numerous times to write many of his liner notes. So this X-Mas season of lights and latkes, please do the right... »
