If you watch "Doña Bárbara," you would never guess that it is based on one of the best novels I've ever read. The film is faithful to the book (the screenplay was written by the book's author Rómulo Gallegos), but somehow the tone of the film is wrong and the performances are off by more than a few centimeters. It is the story of a charismatic woman who controls a vast region of wild terrain in Venezuela. She rules her empire with an iron fist until an intellectual comes to the plains to challenge her authority. The great María Félix ("French Cancan") plays La Doña and she is perfectly cast here. In fact, she is the main reason to watch the movie. Too bad the direction of the material is so uninspired. And the supporting cast is not very good either. That leaves Félix alone to carry the entire production on her shoulders. If you are interested in seeing why Félix is a sacred cow in Mexico you may want to watch this film. If you are looking for a good adaptation of a great book, you may want to skip it. Read the book.
