Hilary Swank to topline ‘Betty Anne’

1 October 2008 7:11 AM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank has signed on to star in Tony Goldwyn’s upcoming drama “Betty Anne Waters,” according to Variety.

Based on a true story, the film follows a single mother who fights her way through law school to represent and help free her imprisoned brother, who was wrongfully convicted of murder.

"There is a spirit and indomitability that Hilary brings that is a strong match for this character’s fierce commitment," Goldwyn told Variety.

Omega Entertainment is set to financially back and distribute the project, which will head into principal photography early next year.

Goldwyn, whose directing credits include “The Last Kiss,” is helming a script by Pamela Gray.

Swank was last seen “P.S. I Love You.” She will next star in Mira Nair’s “Amelia,” which chronicles the life of Ameila Earhart, the famous American pilot who became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic by herself.

Movie Trailer - 'New York, I Love You'

25 August 2008 10:21 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Anthology films usually attract more people to be in their casts than in their audiences. For some reason, whether it's the lack of one linear storyline or whatever, movies like Four Rooms and Coffee and Cigarettes routinely star some of the world's best talent and recruit some of its best directors (although Coffee and Cigarettes was directly entirely by Jim Jarmusch).

Paris Je t'aime was released in 2006 as a love song to Paris, and included segments directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, Tom Tykwer, Walter Salles, Gus Van Sant, and Wes Craven, among many others. That film inspired the follow-up New York, I Love You, which you can't really call a sequel, but it's not a continuation of the storyline. It's kind of an American reimagining, if I can use my least favorite movie term.

I kind of wish this film featured the work of the Paris directors, frankly, although

'New York, I Love You' Trailer Offers Little Slices of The Big Apple

24 August 2008 3:03 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Filed under: Drama, Romance, Toronto International Film Festival, Trailers and Clips

Embedded above is the trailer for New York, I Love You, an anthology of shorts from the producers of the similar Paris, Je T'aime, and going off this taste alone, I'd be willing to say that this might turn out to be just as winsome as that film was.

Several directors -- among them: Mira Nair, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, and, um, Brett Ratner -- and even more actors -- including Bradley Cooper, Chris Cooper, Julie Christie, John Hurt, Ethan Hawke, Orlando Bloom, Shia Labeouf, Kevin Bacon, Maggie Q, and again, Portman -- come together with tales of love and life in the various neighborhoods of NYC.

The film is scheduled to make its world premiere at the fast approaching Toronto International Film Festival next month, and if IMDb is to be believed, it'll open in the States next

Worth Watching - Aug 24: New York, I Love You Trailer

24 August 2008 1:16 PM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

A trailer for the unofficial follow-up to Paris, Je T'aime from last year titled New York, I Love You has debuted. I'm personally trying to unpack and move into our new apartment in Los Angeles today, so I'll make this intro brief. The film features a total of 12 individual shorts. Each one is a love story set in New York City that join together to form a complete film. The directors involved include: Yvan Attal, Allen Hughes, Shunji Iwai, Wen Jiang, Scarlett Johansson, Joshua Marston, Natalie Portman, Brett Ratner, Andrei Zvyagintsev, Fatih Akin, Shekhar Kapur, and Mira Nair. The trailer looks pretty good and I'm interested, but Paris, Je T'aime wasn't exactly the best film, so I'm still a bit hesitant. Enjoy! Watch the first trailer for New York, I Love You: New York, I Love You is an ensemble anthology film featuring 12 shorts set in New York City each

Final Tiff 08 titles announced

19 August 2008 1:29 PM, PDT | From QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news

For a total of 312 films from 64 different countries. Wow, I wish I could go. Of the remaining announcements in 3 different sections, the most intriguing would have to be Vincent Cassel playing legendary French gangster Jacques Mesrine in Public Enemy No. 1. It's listed as a "work-in-progress" so I guess that means what will be screened is not the final cut. Another I'm looking forward to is The Lucky Ones which stars one of my favorites, Tim Robbins. It's about some returning soldiers who go on a road trip across America. Check out the full list following.

Polls show that in certain demographics, more people identify the name Paris with "Hilton" than with "France." Gaining intimate access to the glamorous and chaotic day-to-day life of one of the world's biggest icons, director Adria Petty explores the businesswoman and the human

Mia Wasikowska to enter ‘Wonderland’

24 July 2008 9:21 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Australian actress Mia Wasikowska is in talks to play the titular character in Tim Burton’s upcoming version of “Alice in Wonderland,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Wasikowska is known primarily for her appearances on the Australian TV show “All Saints” and HBO’s “In Treatment.” Her future big-screen projects include Edward Zwick’s war drama “Defiance” and Mira Nair’s Amelia Earhart biopic “Amelia.”

Now she’s set to play Alice in Burton’s new take on Lewis Carroll’s famous novel. The Walt Disney-produced project will head into principal photography later this year, with a release in Digital 3-D scheduled for 2010.

I really can’t comment on the selection of Wasikowska as Alice because I haven’t seen any of her shows yet, but with Burton on board as her director, I’m sure she can pull this one off without major difficulties. Looking at the aforementioned projects,

Christopher Eccleston checks in with ‘Amelia’

12 June 2008 9:52 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

The cast keeps growing for Mira Nair’s upcoming biopic “Amelia,” and the latest to board the project is Christopher Eccleston, according to Variety.

The film takes a closer look at the life and career of Amelia Earhart, who became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic by herself in 1937. Hilary Swank will play the title character, with Eccleston starring as her navigator.

Also on board are Ewan McGregor, Richard Gere and Virginia Madsen. Eccleston is known for his appearances on “Doctor Who” and “Heroes.” He also recently wrapped filming “G.I. Joe,” in which he will play Destro.

I have to admit the cast is pretty impressive, and I’m excited to see how they will handle this truly fascinating true story. Plus, I would like to see Swank deliver a solid performance again. After “The Reaping” and “P.S. I Love You,” it’s about time.
