Matthew McConaughey has defended controversial new movie Tropic Thunder against disability advocate groups, who claim the comedy is irresponsible.
The actor, who has a cameo in the Ben Stiller film, was stunned to find protestors at the movie's Los Angeles premiere last week (ends15Aug08).
They were there protesting the use of the word 'retard' in the film and one scene, in which Stiller and co-star Robert Downey Jr.s' characters poke fun at the mentally disabled.
But McConaughey insists those who fear the film sends the wrong message should at least see the movie, which debuted at number one on Sunday.
Writing on his MySpace.com blog, the Sahara star says: "If you see it, I think you'll agree that all the touchy humour is in context, and in no way mean spirited or irresponsible."

Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson kept their shades on late Saturday night while grabbing Mexican food and heading over to the theaters to watch Tropic Thunder. They weren't the only ones who wanted to watch Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. in action, the movie took the top spot at the box office this weekend. LL and Samantha look like they are doing just fine despite all of the most recent rumors about Lindsay's previous relationship with Courtenay Semel. Whether or not Lindsay used to be with Courtenay, it seems pretty clear who she wants to spend her time with right now. Source

It has been 5 long weeks however The Dark Knight has finally been dethroned from the Us top spot. Tropic Thunder starring Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. took around $37 million, compared to The Dark Knight's $16 million. Although, it did make more than Star Wars: The Clone Wars which took around $15 million.
The Dark Knight has just crossed the $800 million mark worldwide and has overtook Star Wars to become the second highest grossing film ever in the Us. Batman overtakes the Star Wars…

It was all smiles, stuffed animals, and Suri-loving for the Cruise family in NYC this weekend. After Tom put a huge smile on Katie's face taking her to rehearsal on Friday, the family met up for a walk downtown. Later they got all dressed up for dinner at Nobu with Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor and their daughter Ella — perhaps a little early celebration of Tropic Thunder's top spot at the box office this weekend. Tom and Suri dropped off Katie at rehearsal on Saturday and then headed to Chelsea Piers, before Tom tucked in his sleepy baby and was off to Giants Stadium for the Jets-Redskins game that night. On Sunday, Katie and Suri played on the slides and swings at Central Park and went shopping in the West Village. Watching sweet Suri grow up helps us understand why some think she calls the shots in the Cruise household.

The war comedy debuted to a £26 million gross, ending The Dark Knight's month-long reign at the top of the chart. The top ten also featured new entries in the form of Star Wars: The Clone Wars (number three), Mirrors (number four) and Woody Allen's latest, Vicky Cristina Barcelona (number ten). Ben Stiller's hilarious new war movie Tropic Thunder has ended Batman's reign at the top of the U.S. box office.
The comedy, which features Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise, grossed $26 million (GBP13 million) in its first weekend on release in America, giving the film a $37 million (GBP18.5 million) five-day tally.
But there's still plenty for the cast and crew of Batman's The Dark Knight to celebrate - by scoring a healthy $16.8 million (GBP8.4 million) over the weekend, the film becomes the second-highest-grossing film ever, according to new estimates.
The action movie, starring Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger, has now amassed more than $471 million (GBP235,500) in U.S. ticket sales. Only Titanic has made more at the box office.

Weekend of August 15 – 17, 2008
Ben Stiller’s action comedy “Tropic Thunder” kicked “The Dark Knight" off its throne at the North American box office this weekend with $26 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Since its release Wednesday, “Thunder” has lifted its domestic total to $37 million. Starring Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr., the movie follows a group of actors who are pursued by ruthless criminals after their director drops them off in the middle of the jungle.
Slipping to No. 2, Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” took home $16,7 million this weekend, bringing its total gross to $471.4 million after five impressive weeks in release.
Debuting in third place with $15.5 million was Warner’s computer-animated action adventure “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” which serves as an introduction to the upcoming television series of the same title.

The 31-day stranglehold on number one is over. The Dark Knight has finally surrendered the top spot at the U.S. box office, but it did not go quietly. In fact, while most every analyst predicted a drop to third place, the Batman sequel stood its ground and only slipped to second place, passing Star Wars on the all-time list of top-grossing movies in the process; it now only trails Titanic.
The new champeen is Tropic Thunder, which did not put up great numbers over its first five days. As a matter of fact, Pineapple Express, last week's number two film, opened more strongly over the same number of days. But the Ben Stiller comedy did outperform the rest of the field each day, so it sits with $37 million so far, according to Box Office Mojo, about five million less than I would have expected.

If you can take your eyes off of Robert Downey Jr. in blackface when you see Ben Stiller's war-flick spoof "Tropic Thunder," you'll notice the film-within-a-film's spectacularly inept director, Damian Cockburn, sending his actors into the jungle. He's played by Steve Coogan, who's been a household name in the UK for more than a decade and has made a career out of playing arrogant jerks in way over their heads.

We scoffed at last week's run-and-hide approach employed by Pineapple Express and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, hoping to avoid Olympic Fever by opening on Wednesday. It's hard to say whether or not the Olympics really would have caused a lot of damage to a traditional weekend, but we're not laughing this week. Michael Phelps has been in the water.
Yes, the swimmer's assault on history may come at the expense of Tropic Thunder. The new Ben Stiller-directed comedy co-starring Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. has not exploded the way a movie of its caliber normally would. There are really only two logical explanations: Michael Phelps and the Stiller Backlash that also sunk (pardon the pun) The Heartbreak Kid last fall.
Tropic Thunder will most likely still be a big hit, but its numbers since Wednesday are nowhere near what I would've thought. According to Box Office Mojo,

Still more Tropic Thunder outrage. The head of The Arc—the world's largest grassroots organization supporting people with intellectual and developmental abilities—is calling on Ben Stiller to have a sit down and meet with people with disabilities and their families, to help him understand why his movie offended them. They're also demanding that Stiller, Paramount and DreamWorks issue an official apology. So, funny little trivia I found out. The Arc was originally an acronym. When it started, the organization operated under the name The Association of Retarded Children. Since expanding its function beyond children, they stopped calling themselves that.

The players: Director: Ben Stiller, Writers: Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux, Etan Cohen, Cast: Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jay Baruchel, Nick Nolte, Steve Coogan, Danny R. McBride, Brandon T. Jackson
Facts of interest: Stiller also directed "Zoolander," "The Cable Guy" and "Reality Bites."
The plot: A bunch of Hollywood actors are on the run from ruthless killers after their director drops them off in the middle of the jungle.
Our quick thoughts: A solid mixture of satire and spoof, Ben Stiller’s “Tropic Thunder” should wildly entertain those who don’t feel offended by the film’s high dose of rude jokes. DreamWorks’ risqué comedy packs quite a few laughs and boasts plenty of fast-paced action, complete with a brilliant cast of big-time Hollywood players who don’t care to mock their own work.

It's a very busy weekend at the movies, with three movies in wide release, and several more hoping to grab your dollars on a more limited basis. This is one of the last hurrahs for summer, and certainly, in terms of movies with tremendous financial potential, it's the last big weekend for at least a month.
Probably the most notable new release is Tropic Thunder, the new comedy co-written and directed by Ben Stiller, who also stars opposite Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. They play three of Hollywood's biggest actors whose war movie comes apart at the seams when the fake war they're fighting becomes a real war they don't know they're fighting.

The following is an interview I conducted with Ben Stiller about Tropic Thunder in March. As you may have read in our ShoWest coverage, Ben Stiller and Robert Downey, Jr. threw a party to premiere some footage from their upcoming comedy Tropic Thunder. And if you did read our coverage you know that it was a) hilarious and b) the...

By now, I'm sure you've read all about the numerous controversies Ben Stiller's latest action comedy "Tropic Thunder" has caused over the past weeks. Nonetheless, the nation's top critics offered the film a warm welcome with some extraordinarily positive reviews. But what do the Web people have to say about the new stunt by Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr.? Let's find out (I will post my review later today).
• Brad Brevet at RopeOfSilicon: "Stiller shows an incredible ability to manage a highly complex project, which mirrors many big-budget dramas in terms of complexity, but it pieces it all together in such a way you sometimes can forget you are watching a comedy."
• LatinoReview's Ron Henriques: "As I said, Downey Jr. is the hook for this film, but the real shame lies in the fact that the best of what you see of him has already played in

Seriously, I’m asking: will Tropic Thunder, the much-hyped comedy starring Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. (in black face, no less,) really have enough, well, thunder, to knock The Dark Knight out of its top spot at the box office on its one-month anniversary?
If you think about it, Tropic Thunder has a lot of the same things going for it that Dark Knight did:
A) Controversy. Dark Knight had the morose intrigue of Heath Ledger’s final cinematic turn as The Joker of our time. Tropic Thunder has two major controversies surrounding it: Robert Downey Jr.’s stereotypical portrayal of an African-American, complete with black-face, and, what some “activists” are alleging is the film’s overly-cruel mockery of mentally challenged people. (Regarding Downey in black-face: as a part of that club, I have to say I’m fine with it. Tropic Thunder is a satire, not a spoof,

It's easy to forget the clever, absurdist Ben Stiller behind The Ben Stiller Show, especially since the mugging dumbshow Ben Stiller of Meet The Parents is generally much more visible. Stiller's performance is easily the weakest element of Tropic Thunder: Like his Zoolander character, he only has a handful of exaggerated expressions, and he cycles through them on cue. But it's easy to forgive him, given how thoroughly enjoyable Tropic Thunder is on virtually every other count. Where Stiller the actor seems outmatched by the more expressive talents on display, Stiller the co-writer and director contributes a lively, layered comedy packed with cheap but hilarious goofs on Hollywood, from fake trailers for horrible (yet strangely familiar) movies to roman à clef parodies of Hollywood personalities to actors and celebrities outright mocking themselves. The story centers on a big Hollywood war movie on its way down the tubes. It's "a.
