Comic Review: 'Frankenstein Mobster'

14 November 2009 12:03 PM, PST

Like a lot of horror fans, I've long held a fondness for stories that find a way to utilize a variety of iconic monsters, and that give them a semi-believable mythology. There aren't many though. And for every Nightmare Before Christmas there's more than a few Van Helsings. That's part of what I find so compelling about Mark Wheatley's comic book Frankenstein Mobster (the complete series of which is collected for the first time this month in a stunningly beautiful new trade paperback from Idw). Wheatley creates a reason for mummies, medusas and the book's titular monster to co-exist. Moreover, he does so in such a clever way you wonder why no one did it before. Monstros City is a town filled with two... »

'Paranormal Activity' Passes 100 Million!

13 November 2009 1:36 PM, PST

It's official -- word has reached us from Paramount that, as of Friday, the studio's Paranormal Activity has grossed over one-hundred million dollars at the box office, in just five weeks; and become the top-grossing R-rated thriller of the past decade. Not bad for a movie that cost only fifteen thousand to make in an unknown director's home.    Of course that director, Oren Peli (pictured above with, from right to left, Paranormal stars Katie Fetherston and Micah Sloat), isn't exactly unknown any more. His next film, Area 51, is already garnering quite a bit of buzz, as it looks to marry his improvisational shooting technique to an X-Files style tale of... »

Black Sun Productions Unleash 'Enoeraew'

13 November 2009 10:48 AM, PST

If you recall my article praising Italian electro-industrial unit Bahntier (if not, go check it out... I'll wait), you already know this talented outfit is more than worthy to join the ranks of artists like Skinny Puppy in pushing the boundaries of chilling, beat-driven experimental tunes. Bahntier founder Stefano Rossello recently joined forces with Black Sun Productions – created by former members of pioneering industrial band Coil – whose projects have involved artists from Lydia Lunch to Alien designer H.R. Giger. The result of this team-up is a bizarre new sonic experiment entitled Enoeraew. As they declare on their official site: "Leave all hesitation, all hope abandon and enter... »

Batlord Unearths 'Death by Woman' Download

13 November 2009 8:49 AM, PST

Old-school 'mortuary rock' outfit Batlord – an indie quartet known worldwide for using vintage instruments to create a retro-fitted, gothic/psychedelic garage-rock sound – recently held a series of events in the La area to mark the release of their new album Death by Woman, the sequel to their cult hit Music to be Buried To. The digital version of that album is now available for download... more details below the fold! Batlord modestly compare their sound to "the soundtrack for Dracula simultaneously humping Vampire and The Bride of Frankenstein on a cold stone floor with Lily Munster bound, gagged, stripped, suspended upside down and forced to hang there, blindfolded, listening during a thunderstorm on... »

Watch Three New 'Dexter' Clips

12 November 2009 5:30 PM, PST

We've got two sneak peek clips from the next episode of Dexter (which airs this Sunday night on Showtime) and one from Dexter: Early Cuts.  Watch all three after the jump! The first clip has the Miami Pd profiling Trinity.  And they're pretty dead-on with their description.  But the scene is most interesting for it's never-subtle humor – like Deb accidentally offering Quinn a blow job right there in the station. In the second clip, Dexter goes to visit Arthur and finds out he is leaving tomorrow on a trip to Tampa for a Four Walls "charity build," which is of course code for another Trinity cycle starting.  Which means Dexter will have to take his... »

Review: '2012'

12 November 2009 4:07 PM, PST

"Torture porn" is a phrase that (unfortunately) was coined to describe explicitly gory horror films, ones that (allegedly) invite you to leer, linger and drool over the worst sort of atrocities imaginable. It only seems fair, then, that I semi-coin the phrase "disaster porn" to describe Roland Emmerich's latest cinematic gargantuan: 2012. I feel it's worth mentioning that A) I don't believe that Roland Emmerich has ever made a good film, but B) I grew up with a deep and passionate love for the best of Irwin Allen's films. (Mostly just The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno, really, but I've seen 'em all.) So if I can get behind the mega-bombastic, ultra-plastic, ensemble cast body-count... »

Will Jerry Dandridge Battle the Nerds of Doom?

12 November 2009 1:15 PM, PST

The Hollywood Reporter just announced that former Buffy the Vampire Slayer showrunner Marti Noxon has been tapped by Dreamworks to write the remake of '80s vampire fave Fright Night. Noxon's served as writer or producer on a lot of recent critical darlings, everything from Prison Break to Mad Men, but lest we forget -- she was once responsible for some of the worst Buffy episodes ever. Under Noxon's tenure as executive producer during Buffy's sixth and seventh seasons, the show took a definite nosedive. Lame, one-dimensional villains like season 6's Nerds of Doom and season 7's The First were introduced, scripts obsessed over Spike to the detriment of the show's... »

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer?' Hell Yeah!

12 November 2009 9:57 AM, PST

'Hell Yeah!' is an ongoing series in which horror filmmakers, critics and fans share their take on movies they love. This month: vampires! Buffy the Vampire Slayer brought a new dimension to the vampire oeuvre.  Based on the campy feature film of the same name, the Buffy television series managed to maintain the humorous aspects while still offering a satisfying "bite."  The vampires in the show were humanized.  They were full-formed characters who had interests outside of sucking blood and listening to Bauhaus.  The most well-known Buffy vampire was Angel.   In the Buffyverse, vampires had no souls, which was what made them able to rip apart innocent humans without... »

Nick Cave Prepares to Release 'The Road' Soundtrack

12 November 2009 8:49 AM, PST

According to UK music mag NME, macabre alt-rocker Nick Cave will be releasing the soundtrack to John Hillcoat's highly anticipated post-apocalypse film The Road early next year. Cave had previously collaborated with longtime Bad Seeds bandmate Warren Ellis on Hillcoat's previous film, the gritty western The Proposition (which Cave also co-wrote), and the same musical team came together to score the eagerly-awaited adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's ultra-grim cult novel. More details await below the fold... According to NME online, Cave composed the music as "a direct response to the film," in which Viggo Mortensen plays a survivor of a global holocaust traveling cross-country with his young son. He describes... »

What Will Whedon Do Next?

11 November 2009 4:45 PM, PST

It's been a dark couple of days for TV genre fans. Despite the public's obsession with vampires (evident in the just-announced People's Choice Award nominations), Eastwick was axed, Fringe and V have taken a ratings tumble, and Dollhouse has been cancelled. (The Hollywood Reporter broke the news this afternoon.) After one and a half seasons (well, two half seasons to be exact), the sci-fi thriller about a mysterious team of all-purpose programmable human beings for hire has been given its walking papers by Fox, the same network that pulled the plug on Whedon's late lamented Firefly. Anyone who's been keeping up with the show can't be surprised. The ratings were weak in... »

'Clash of the Titans' Trailer = Monsters!

11 November 2009 2:45 PM, PST

Man he's quick! Outspoken Chud writer Devin Faraci has just posted a nifty creature/monster breakdown from the recently released Clash of the Titans trailer. Medusa, giant scorpions, The Stygian Witches, they're all here. Check out the trailer and more info on Chud's breakdown below. My only complaint...we didn't get to it first! Damn you Faraci. Nice work! The trailer has me really excited for this flick now. Sure it's got that rock and/or roll music (turn it down!) and quick edits, but it really seems reminiscent of the original and most importantly makes me feel like a kid again. See Devin's full article here and while you're at it, you can also check out a clean version of the... »
