4 Reasons to Get Excited for Burton & Depp's 'Dark Shadows'
25 December 2009 9:05 PM, PST
Twilight fans, you might think that no one has ever loved vampires like you do, that there's no way your parents could understand the passion you have for sweet, tortured Edward Cullen. That's because you probably haven't head of Dark Shadows. Decades before Stephenie Meyer put pen to paper, the 1960s gothic soap opera was entertaining daytime TV fans with tales of witches, werewolves, and, yes, blood-sucking fiends of the night. There have been many attempts to remake the series since its original airing, but with the recent vampire craze comes a new stab at the Dark Shadows world - and this one stands a real shot of happening because Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are partnering to remake »
Top 9 of '09: DVD and Blu-ray
25 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST
You can always count on the studio horror titles (the ones worth seeing, like Drag Me to Hell and Paranormal Activity) to show up on DVD, like clockwork, only a few short months after their theatrical release. That's a reliable and comforting schedule for the horror geek who constantly needs something new to watch, savor, and then listen to a commentary on. And that's probably why the old-school no-nonsense horror film fans love the "catalog" releases so much. They're like buried treasure sprinkled across the DVD shops. "Hey, they're putting out Face Chompers 2 from '87! And they put back the crotch-bite scene! And there's a cast commentary!" Yeah, stuff like that. Big time fun. So with »
'Black Christmas' (2006)? Hell Yeah!
24 December 2009 10:02 AM, PST
'Hell Yeah!' is an ongoing series in which horror filmmakers, critics and fans share their take on movies they love. This month: holiday horror flicks! It's snowing. The sun has set and an eerie silence has fallen outside as the moon hangs high. Most of the lights are off in the house, except for the glow of the Christmas tree and the rainbow of colors from the Christmas lights hung around our kitchen windows. On this cozy December evening, my wife turns to me and asks what movie we should watch tonight. A Christmas Carol? No. Elf? Nah. Scrooged? Hmmm, no. How about Black Christmas? Which, the original or the remake? The »
Top 9 of '09: Games
24 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST
Trying to come up with a Top 9 of 2009 can certainly be difficult for many reasons (I shudder to think about what will happen if we're around until 2025). I don't have quite the same amount of piss and vinegar as I did last year when I made my Top 8 Annoyances of 2008, and 2009 was actually a pretty damn good year for gaming as a whole. So thus, in alphabetical order, FEARnet proudly present our Top 9 Games of 2009. Batman: Arkham Asylum The game that proves, once and for all, that Batman games don't have to suck, despite a long history of mediocre gameplay and themes that completely missed the mark in previous Bat-titles. Rocksteady, the relatively unknown developer who took on the daunting »
Updated: 'Solomon Kane' Clips
24 December 2009 8:04 AM, PST
While Solomon Kane looks to offer bloody battles of epic proportion, the flick also looks like it's gonna hold its own as a solid period piece as well. The proof is in these clips from Solomon Kane titled 'Capture of Family' and 'Hall of Mirrors', check them out below. Updated 12.24 @ 8:02am: New clips added to the widget below including a fighting sequence and a behind-the-scenes making of the creatures of Solomon Kane. And if you head here, you can sample portions of the films' soundtrack. The film follows a 16th century soldier whose past sins come back to haunt him as he seeks redemption through squaring off against an evil power that threatens his world. »
'Jennifer's Body' Comes Home (On DVD & Blu-ray)
24 December 2009 12:00 AM, PST
Did you see Jennifer's Body back in September? If the film's disappointing box office is any guide, you probably didn't. And who can blame you? The hype machine was turned up high - too high, probably. It takes an awfully high degree of overexposure to make America Not want to look at Megan Fox. But admit it: you planned on seeing Jennifer's Body eventually, right? Well eventually is almost here: next week brings us the unrated cut on Blu-ray and DVD. How unrated? We're not sure, but director Karyn Kusama promised that her version flies its "freak flag" a lot higher than the PG-13 rated theatrical cut. To whet your appetite, here's a clip from early in the film, showing a »
'Aliens vs. Predator' Video Game Trailer
23 December 2009 3:32 PM, PST
I don't know that anyone has really had much luck when they've placed the words Aliens and Predator together, but from the looks of it, Sega may have hit gold with their new Aliens vs. Predator video game. Not only does it seem to capture the essence of what an Aliens vs. Predator match up should look like (even those Alien eggs look amazing), they've got Lance Henriksen providing the voice of character Karl Bishop Weyland. Hit the jump for the trailer and tell us we're wrong. I dare you! The corporation of Weyland-Yutani has a few skeletons in their closet in this story trailer for Aliens vs. Predator. »
'Repo Men' - Red-Band Trailer, Pics, Poster
23 December 2009 1:32 PM, PST
Wow, this one came out of nowhere and totally caught us by surprise. First there was Repo! The Genetic Opera and now there is Repo Men, (formerly Repossession Mambo) starring Jude Law and Forest Whitaker. Which came first? I'm not really sure; I think it depends on who you ask. But for now we have your first official look at Repo Men including a restricted trailer, image, poster and official synopsis. Despite the fact that the trailer appears to be giving everything away, i'm intrigued, I think it looks pretty cool. If only there were musical numbers...Hit the jump for all the goodies. In the futuristic action-thriller Repo Men, humans have extended and improved our lives through highly sophisticated and expensive »
'Demonic Toys 2: Personal Demons' Clips
23 December 2009 1:03 PM, PST
I've always been a fan of the disposable style of entertainment that Full Moon has provided its fans (and that's not a knock on them, believe me!). Everything from Puppetmaster to Subspecies and Dollman to Demonic Toys. It's like comfort food on film. We've been telling you about the new Puppetmaster: Axis of Evil and Demonic Toys flicks for a month or so now and today I have two new clips from Demonic Toys 2: Personal Demons to share with you below. I Really wish that there were more demonic toys in these clips, such is life. But I did throw in the trailer again here at the end to make up for it. Enjoy. Caitlin and David explore the bottom floor of the castle as they discover a book that was once used »
Dust Settles After Manson's Legal Battle
23 December 2009 11:02 AM, PST
The messy two-year legal entanglement between Marilyn Manson and his former keyboardist Stephen Bier (aka Pogo, previously Madonna Wayne Gacy) has apparently come to a conclusion, according to an announcement made by Manson's reps yesterday. The $20 million breach-of-contract suit brought against Manson by Bier was settled for a mere $175,000 – all of which is apparently going to cover Bier's legal fees. Ouch. Details below... As described in the statement, Bier alleged that Manson blew his entire share of the band's earnings during Bier's tour of duty to buy everything from Nazi artifacts to a $150,000 engagement ring for then-fiancée Dita Von Teese... but according to Manson's attorney, the »
Interview: 'Paranormal Activity' Director Oren Peli
23 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST
Ring in the New Year with a few scares and Paranormal Activity on DVD Tuesday Dec 29th. We spoke to director Oren Peli to get all the dish. While he remained steadfastedly tight-lipped on upcoming projects, including Area 51 and Paranormal Activity 2, he did clue us in on some Paranormal Activity DVD deets, and thoughts on how his "little movie that could" is changing the industry. FEARnet: What can we expect from the DVD of Paranormal Activity? Oren Peli: I think the main thing will be the opportunity for people to watch the film in their own homes. Watching the film in a theatre is fun because you get to feed off the energy of the crowd, but watching it at home is different. Since the »
Helloween Finish Shooting 'Dr. Stein'
23 December 2009 9:30 AM, PST
Old-school German metal unit Helloween had some fun with their macabre image while making the video for their hit single Dr. Stein – which is also the first track from the band's upcoming 25th Anniversary album Unarmed. The band offered a few glimpses of the production on their website, and shared some intriguing details about the epic new record. Go below the fold and find out more... Directed by Oliver Sommer, Dr. Stein is a fun monster-mash homage to classic horror flicks and comics, and is played totally for laughs: "The guys don't take themselves too serious," they explain on their site, "and intentionally present the band in a very self-ironic way." The video is slated to premiere »
Top 9 of '09: Books
23 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST
Horror may not occupy as large a section in the bookstore as science fiction, but that doesn't mean it isn't equally effective in print, as the following titles selected by FEARnet's resident bookworm, presented in alphabetical order show. American Fantastic Tales The Library of America has begun, in recent years, to embrace genre, with volumes dedicated to Philip K. Dick and H.P. Lovecraft; the latter edited by master horror novelist Peter Straub. Straub returns to edit these two volumes, an essential collection of American fantasy stories, spanning the country's existence. What Straub has discovered, to his and our delight and pleasure, is that the majority of significant American »

Review: 'The New Daughter'
22 December 2009 3:02 PM, PST
Now here's a strange case: a sedate and mellow horror thriller from Warner Bros. called The New Daughter that used to be a New Line title but got lost in the shuffle and then dumped into a 30-city release right before Christmas -- despite the fact that it's a vehicle for a rather big movie star named Kevin Costner. When confronted by a "mini-release dump" title like this one or Carriers (which I really dug) or Blood Creek (haven't seen it yet) or Midnight Meat Train (woohoo!) I often go on the defensive. I actually root for the movie to be good, so I can then point to the boneheaded studio folks and claim that they sunk a quality flick by tossing it into obscure theaters only because of contractual »
'The Vampire Diaries' Gets New Blood
22 December 2009 2:03 PM, PST
The CW's breakout hit, The Vampire Diaries adds a new member to the supernaturally-attractive cast. Starting with the January 21 episode, Mia Kirshner will join the cast as the wife of history teacher/vampire Alaric. According to EW.com, the January 21 episode has long been in the can, and hints that "11th hour reshoots" were done to add her to the episode. I'm a little wary of last-minute reshoots, as they tend to be… well, not good. But I love Mia Kirshner, so I will keep an open mind. Kirshner is probably best known for her role in Showtime's The L Word, but FEARnet readers are probably more familiar with her work in Exotica, The Crow: City of Angels, and The Black »
Scary Anti-Christmas from SpookhauS!
22 December 2009 1:02 PM, PST
If you thought the creators of twisted satanic soundscapes just give up and go into hiding during all the warm 'n' fuzzy festivities this time of year, you haven't spent enough time in our neighborhood. Freezing nights, chill winds and slate-gray skies make the perfect setting for the sinister sensibilities of the Canadian "Artist of Darkness" known as SpookhauS... in his world, perky carolers be damned! He invited FEARnet to check out some anti-Christmas treats he's cooked up in his lab, and there's enough creepiness down there to scare Santa right out of his striped skivvies. Hit the jump and find out for yourself! SpookhauS, alias Bruce Campbell (no relation to the big-chinned deadite slayer), has »
Roger Corman's 'Piranha' on Blu-ray
22 December 2009 12:03 PM, PST
It was just yesterday that one of my co-workers alerted me to the fact that Shout Factory had plans to release a slew of Roger Corman classics on DVD and Blu-ray. Today we have word on the first title to get the hi def treatment courtesy of Hi Def Digest and it's Corman's 1978 killer fish flick (Directed by Joe Dante and written by John Sayles) Piranha. Yes folks, Piranha will be given the Blu-ray treatment on April 6th 2010. No word on specs or supplements, but it's worth noting that HD Digest is indeed listing a Blu-ray sized Msrp of $27.99, so here's hoping for one heck of a new hi-def transfer and lots of goodies to go along with it. Looking forward to the other Corman titles to be announced, we'll keep »
'Fringe: The Lost Episode'
22 December 2009 11:03 AM, PST
Fox will be airing a 'new' episode of Fringe this January, a season one episode that was allegedly – and inexplicably – "lost" and recently recovered. The episode will feature Charlie Francis (played by Kirk Acevedo), who was killed off early in season two. The plotline centers around a teenager who, when taken off life support after an accident, suddenly wakes up, speaking Russian and with a surprising knowledge of classified Russian secrets. There are so many reasons that I think this is a marketing trick. First off, a "lost" episode of a Jj Abrams show just in time for the final season of his other show, Lost? Second, the episode is entitled Unearthed – that »
