She Freak (DVD Review)

23 December 2009 10:00 PM, PST

It’s not often that I’ll sit down and watch much retro horror, and She Freak is a prime example of why I avoid it. The back of the DVD case proclaims the movie to be “a barbarous experience,” and it’s not lying. Every one of the movie’s 82 minutes is practically excruciating.

Claire Brennan stars as Jade Cochran, the main character and titular She Freak. Tired of her uninspiring dead-end job as a waitress at the local dive diner, she uproots and leaves for the glamorous job of, wait for it, waitress at a traveling carnival. Of course, it doesn’t take long for the new job to become just as dead-end and depressing as her previous one, so she begins looking for love and finds it in the form of the owner of the carnival’s freak show. The freak show she despises. You can see where this is going. »

Terror Tidbits (Fango #290): What’s Scary: Part Two

23 December 2009 10:00 PM, PST

In the first part of this essay, I made a case for one 21st-century remake (Zack Snyder’s Dawn Of The Dead) as a standout, and now we come to the best horror movie of the new century, Dennis Iliadis’ brilliant revisiting of The Last House On The Left. The engine driving this movie is the most powerful the genre has to offer: fear of the Homicidal Other. There have been hundreds—perhaps even thousands—of these in the long history of the fright film, and most have the same underlying premise: You meet the Homicidal Other either as karmic retribution for doing something wrong (think of Janet Leigh in Psycho, who never would have been showering at the Bates Motel if she hadn’t embezzled a bunch of money from the Phoenix business where she worked) or—this is worse—because you just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. »

Lightning Home Entertainment just sent Fangoria yet another clip (see an earlier clip here) from their DVD release of the horror/comedy Diagnosis: Death, which streets on December 29th (pre-order here). This new clip, "Seizure or Convulsion?" features Bret McKenzie from HBO's Flight Of The Conchords as a doctor who is bickering with a nurse over whether a patient is having a seizure or a convulsion.

See that clip and the trailer below the jump!

A supernatural force brings together two lost souls undergoing radical treatment at an experimental drug-testing facility. When the facility is locked down for the weekend and the drugs take effect, the human guinea pigs experience sinister hallucinations pointing to a horrific double murder. This Ain’T Ghost Hunters (Nsfw XXX DVD Review)

23 December 2009 12:06 PM, PST

I’ll just come right out and say it: parody porn may be one of my favorite guilty pleasures. From Bikini Royale to Sex Trek: The Next Penetration, there are plenty of laughs to be had. It’s not even always about the sex itself, but in the various ways and various success the filmmakers achieve in turning a popular property Into a sex film. If you haven’t heard Tony Tedeschi’s Barney Rubble impersonation in The Flintbones, do yourself a favor and check it out. Pure gold. Having gotten that out of the way, let’s move on to the most recent flick to cross my review desk, Hustler’s This Ain’T Ghost Hunters XXX.

This Ain’T Ghost Hunters XXX is another in Hustler’s line of This Aint… parody spoofs, including This Ain’T The Munsters and This Ain’T 90210. Surprisingly, it’s actually a »

Santa Claus Conquers The Stage!

23 December 2009 11:29 AM, PST

The greatest UFO incident of all time was not Roswell or Area 51--it was when little green men landed in the North Pole and attempted to kidnap Santa Claus!  This occurred in the grade Z atrocity, Santa Claus Conquers The Martians.

Everyone knows Santa Claus Conquers The Martians, the 45-year old bad movie that surfaces this time of year on late night TV and at 99-Cents Only Stores.  It's #77 on the IMDb's "Bottom 100" of the worst movies of all time.

The legendary made-in-New Jersey bomb that pits the Christmas Crusader against backwards aliens who know nothing about our Yuletide traditions, is a goofy holiday perennial best known for introducing the world to Pia Zadora, who played the Martian daughter, Girmar..

The Maverick Theater in Fullerton, California lives up to their name by staging a faithful adaptation of Santa Claus Conquers The Martians that simultaneously takes the piss out of it! »

23 December 2009 11:11 AM, PST

On March 31, 2010 Capcom will release Monster Hunter Tri (aka Monster Hunter 3) for the Nintendo Wii, marking the first time that Wii owners in the West will be able to experience the franchise. Today, the publisher alerted Fangoria to the launch of their teaser site for the game, which is now online here.

Get full details on the game and check out the latest trailer below the break. Monster Hunter Tri can be pre-ordered here.

One of the most strikingly beautiful titles ever developed for Nintendo’s Wii, Monster Hunter Tri depicts a living, breathing ecosystem where man co-exists with the fantastic beasts that roam both the dry land and the brand new sub-aqua environment - a first for the series.

Monster Hunter Tri sees the introduction of an expansive story mode with players taking on the role of a hunter, who is tasked by the Village Chief to investigate the »

Cheezy Horror – Vol. 1 (DVD Review)

23 December 2009 10:55 AM, PST

Looking for some cheesy laughs, but don’t have much time? Then look into Cheezy Horror – Vol. 1 on DVD. It’s a full hour of some of the cheesiest trailers from some of the “worst” horror movies ever made. As a pure romp through the days of horror past, it’s an hour well spent. Cowboy vampires! Lustful little folks! Tattoo! It’s all here.

The collection features a wide array of trailers from classic horror films, from 1959’s Curse Of The Undead (featuring the aforementioned cowboy vampires) to 1980’s Humanoids From The Deep (featuring a lot more nudity than one usually finds in a trailer.) There’s a Lot of fun to be had here, from the laughable taglines (Blood Curdling, Screaming Horror!), to the self-answering questions (what is the fiendish power of the ring that enslaves?), to spotting a lot of actors who would later go on to »

The Morning After (DVD Review)

23 December 2009 10:52 AM, PST

After a night of partying, a group of friends wake up and while coping with their hangovers, they must deal with the giant insects unleashed by their idiot, science major roommate.

If you’re friends with David Sherbrook or any of the Infested Films crew then you’ll love The Morning After.  You’ll laugh in all the right places and when David asks what you think of his film, you’ll think of a hundred different creative ways to praise him.  You might even beg to be in his next film.

But if you’re like me, then you may be annoyed by the overacting, bored by the lack of action/interesting characters, and unimpressed by the gore/special effects any child can recreate with items bought at Party City.

It’s obvious from the start that this isn’t a movie to be taken seriously, but if it »

Paranormal State: Season 3 (DVD Review)

23 December 2009 10:48 AM, PST

After experiencing a haunting as a child, Ryan Buell founded the Paranormal Research Society (Prs), a team of investigators who travel across the country trying to help families cope with the supernatural.

Yes, I believe in ghosts.  No, I don’t believe in psychics, mediums, ghost whisperers, etc.  But instead of using this review to debate the existence of life after death, I’m going to answer two specific questions.  Number one: Is this series entertaining?

Answer:  For about five minutes.  Each of the 21 episodes have a few chilling moments that mainly come during the “interview” sessions.  This is where the haunted describe their supernatural encounters.  These testimonials provide the frightening atmosphere of a campfire ghost story, and if there are any nightmares to be influenced by Paranormal State, it will be these scenes that spark them.

I haven’t seen the previous seasons so I can’t compare, but »

District 9 (DVD Review)

23 December 2009 10:43 AM, PST

South Africa is the star of District 9 (now out on DVD & Blu-ray from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment). Johannesburg, South Africa to be specific. That’s where the film’s co-writer-director Neill Blomkamp was born, and by using that city and country’s turbulent political, social and racial history as the backdrop for his allegorical story, the first-time feature-length helmer enhances this Sf film with a great resonance, relevance and resolve.

Twenty years ago, a disabled spacecraft appeared over Johannesburg. When the military boarded the ship, they discovered malnourished and ailing alien survivors—some sort of virus or disease left unexplained had killed off the rest of their race. The spacecraft is inoperable, and video footage showed a section of the ship falling to Earth, but it has never been found.

The Department of Alien Affairs is in charge of controlling and supervising the aliens. The insect-looking extraterrestrials—who have »

Terror Tidbits (Fango #290): The Wolfman: Hair Today, Gore Tomorrow

22 December 2009 10:00 PM, PST

The beast is back, and he’s staring Fangoria right in the eye. It’s May 2008, and the end of a long day at England’s Pinewood Studios, where your correspondent has been given a tantalizing behind-the-scenes tour of Universal’s latest attempt to mine its classic horror back catalog, following the successful revamp of The Mummy. After visiting various sets and interviewing some of the cast and crew of The Wolfman, we have decamped to a windowless room to chat with makeup legend Rick Baker about the task of turning star Benicio Del Toro into the eponymous monster.

Midway through our chat, the lights go out, plunging the room into total darkness. “Stay calm,” instructs the film’s unit publicist, “it’s just a problem with the fuse.” But something is afoot. Suddenly, there’s movement at a door, and a large shape enters the room. As our eyes become accustomed to the gloom, »

Exclusive: The Fangoria interview with Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed

22 December 2009 11:39 AM, PST

If you’re into metal or hardcore, chances are you have a Hatebreed record in your collection. Known for their crushing live shows and tireless efforts, the band has been a fixture in heavy music for the past fifteen years.  With a growing following based on a mutual loyalty and respect between the band and their audience, the Grammy-nominated band closes out 2009 with a hit album on a new label, energized by their return to independence.

At the center of all things Hatebreed is Jamey Jasta - the multi-tasking frontman not only of Hatebreed, but also of Kingdom Of Sorrow and Icepick. Balancing music with running his own label Stillborn Records, and a clothing line called Hatewear without ever seeming spread too thin, Jasta has his sights set on conquering even more frontiers in the near future.

Last month I had the chance to talk with Jamey in the midst of Hatebreed’s fall tour, »

Terror Tidbits (Fango #290): Mad About The Crazies

21 December 2009 10:00 PM, PST

Blam! Brains and blood splatter the windshield of a big rig as the character who just took a shot to the head flies backward, slamming down on the concrete. Elsewhere in the truck bay/workshop, the smell of burning flesh hangs heavy in the air (actually, the chemical stench of a previously safely-on-fire stuntman). Gunfire echoes in the hangar-sized building; “Cut!” is called, playback watched, and then on to another setup on the remake of George A. Romero’s The Crazies.

It’s a slightly nippy March night in Georgia, and day 12 of the nine-week shoot on the latest gruesome facelift of a ’70s horror movie, being directed on a significantly higher budget by Breck Eisner (whose credits include Sahara and Fear Itself’s The Sacrifice). Having an estimated $25 million to play with gives Eisner the opportunity to take Romero’s core concept and give it an action-packed approach the »

Rammstein debut “Ich Tu Dir Weh” video

21 December 2009 10:23 AM, PST

Fangoria Musick just got word that Rammstein have debuted their latest video for “Ich Tu Dir Weh” today at this location (Nsfw: visit at your own risk, as entrance to minors is forbidden in Germany and access restrictions may apply for other countries as well).

“Ich Tu Dir Weh” is the ultimate distillation of a Rammstein concert into five minutes. As with Rammstein’s preceding video “Pussy,” Jonas Åkerlund stands at the helm as director, and for “Ich Tu Dir Weh,” he captures the show on the band’s “rehearsal stage” in 35mm.

The plan was simple. Åkerlund uses the language of grand cinema, Rammstein delivers the rest: the theatre, the flesh, the frenzy. “Ich Tu Dir Weh” shows the band at its purest and most concentrated.

Liebe Ist FÜR Alle Da, arrived in stores on Oct. 20 through a marketing and distribution deal with Vagrant Records and Universal Music Germany. »

Curse Of The Faceless Man (DVD Review)

21 December 2009 10:12 AM, PST

This week I took a look at Curse Of The Faceless Man on DVD. Cheers to Oregon-based Cheezy Flicks for finally giving this low budget gem from 1958 a proper DVD release.

Directed by the inimitable Edward L. Cahn, (It! The Terror From Beyond Space) the film essentially tweaks the plot of the old Universal Mummy flicks, just switching the action to Italy. (California, really).

A Roman slave is buried by the explosion of Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii two thousand years ago. His body, now hardened into stone, is discovered by a group of scientists led by American Dr. Paul Mallon. (Richard Anderson of TV's Six Million Dollar Man fame).

It's not long before our lava encrusted friend returns to life to seek his lost love who has been conveniently reincarnated into the body of Dr. Mallon's fiancée, Tina. (Elaine Edwards). Much like The Mummy, he kills all in his path »
